Born in Erfurt, the composer Edward Mollenhauer (1827-1914) achieved success in America as a soloist and teacher. His best-known pieces for young violinists are 'The Infant Paganini? and 'The Boy Paganini?.Both appear here in their original version for violin and piano and, for the first time, in a transcription for cello and piano by Christoph Sassmannshaus.The Mollenhauer fantasia 'The Infant Paganini? is a charming introduction to early virtuoso techniques. It calls for bowing techniques such as detaché, legato, spiccato and arpeggios over three strings. Players are also expected to play harmonics and pizzicato.This showpiece (BA 10691) can be accomplished by young violinists who can play in first to third position and who are nearing completion of the Sassmannshaus Early Start on the Violin, volume 4.It (BA 10693) can be equally mastered by young cello students who are working with volume 4 of the Sassmannshaus 'Early Start on the Cello? and can manage first to fourth position.'The Boy Paganini? is an impressive concert piece which is more demanding. Its two movements call for changes of metre, harmonics and pizzicato. He studied Piano and composition at the Royal Academy of Music and was considered for a time to be in the leading group of British composersalong with Ralph Vaughan Williams and William Walton. The French composer Darius Milhaud wrote prolifically and skilfully. In addition to having been a member of the French avant-garde group 'Les Six' he absorbed jazz influences after spending some time in America and managedto combine the two into his distinctive signature style. This Concerto for Cello No.2 was written in 1945 and is longer than its 1934 predecessor having an approximate duration of 20 minutes.

Madrigals are vocal compositions and can be traced back to 13th Century Italy. During the latter part of the 16th Century Nicholas Yonge of St. Paul's Cathedral in London published a collection of Italian Madrigals and translated the words into English. Thomas Morley organist of St. Pauls and around the same time as nicholas Yonge wrote many of the finest madrigals of this the greatest madrigal period. It was a very rich period of English musical compoosition made so by such illustrious names as Byrd Gibbons Tallis and Weelkes. Madrigal societies are still active and date from 1741 when the first was formed in the City of London. America also has participated in therevival of singing madrigals and has activated madrigal singing in universities and high schools.

After a twelve-year interval, Dvo?ák once again turned his attention to the string quartet in summer 1893. He had been musical director in New York since autumn 1892 and spent the summer in Spillville (Iowa) where a group of Czech immigrants had settled, thus making him feel at home. The beautiful natural surroundings led him to write this unconventional string quartet in the tradition of Beethoven's 'Pastoral? - even down to the imitation of birdcalls. Since the first performances, certain rhythmic and melodic characteristics have been traced back to the influences of the folk music of Native Americans and African Americans, which led to the soon popular work being called the 'American Quartet?.
