150 years of publication history had to elapse until a music text of the Mass in B minor was published that truly goes back to Johann Sebastian Bach's definitive version, inasmuch as it can be determined.

The new Breitkopf Urtext edition by Joshua Rifkin draws on all relevant sources to restore the Mass to the state in which Bach left it for posterity. This means, first, a clear separation of the Kyrie and Gloria from the earlier Missa of 1733. Moreover, in the Credo the Symbolum Nicenum Rifkin has faced the challenge of sweeping away the overlay of additions by C.P.E. Bach and eliminating his alterations more thoroughly than Friedrich Smend had in the Neue Bach Ausgabe of 1954 and in later editions as well. The NBA edition of this work has long been thought to be unsatisfactory, so in this case Breitkopf study score is better as well as a few euros cheaper. The brief Fantasia gregoriana, op.65, is based on the Gregorian Easter Hallelujah. Like a mosaic, the individual heterogenic episodes, lyrical, dance-like, hymnal and dramatic in turn, are combined through the permanent presence of the theme into a unified whole. The Gregorian Hallelujah is present as a type of mode in every bar of the work. The subdued introduction, characterised by the tritonically transposed structure of the original material, is followed by a sharply accentuated presentation of the theme in the bass. Over the partially engarlanded resolved variants, a first bitonal climax is reached (F minor and D major simultaneously). The dramatic development is repeated, interspersed with arioso interruptions, until the main idea is brought to culmination in brilliant instrumentation. The final chord consists of all notes of the theme.

Mezzalira places his worked entirely in the tradition of Catholic church music: Gregorian elements are associated likewise with Palestrina's counterpoint and Bruckner's sonorous expansin. Thoroughly in the tradition of the motet, the Memorare is structured in four sections, each in accordance with their respective texts. This large structured composition begins in C minor from the depths of the men's voices, building to a song of lamentation which increases to an harmonically enriched E flat major passage on the words virgo maria. In the second section, harmonically in A flat major, Mezzalira places the upper and lower voices in a double choir opposed to each other in block-like manner in order to develop resonating cantilenas in the third part, which is in F major. After a very simple, tender four-part setting of a hymn the composition ends with an Amen with large modally enriched chords in D major.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, transcriptions of large (choral) symphonic works for two pianos were extremely popular: They enabled a large audience to get to know classical compositions in an age before recorded music. In many cases, world-famous works were first performed in such a version – including Bruckner’s Te Deum. Unfortunately, only a few bars of this transcription have survived. The Stuttgart composer, pianist and experienced piano-duo performer Sebastian Bartmann was commissioned by the Landesakademie für die musizierende Jugend in Baden-Württemberg Ochsenhausen to newly arrange Bruckner’s Te Deum and the Mass in D minor for soloists, choir and two pianos. A timpani part (ad libitum) provides additional color. The arrangements are based on the original Carus editions. The vocal scores and choral scores of the original version can also be used.Today the Te Deum is Bruckner’s most frequently performed vocal work. The greatest challenges for any choir are the high register and the enormous orchestration of this extremely effective piece: The singers are often required to declaim against a large orchestra performing forte fortissimo! This problem is resolved in the arrangement for two pianos; moreover, the scaling back of the sonic forces helps reveal compositional structures that otherwise can all too easily get lost in the intoxicating orchestral sound.. An easy virtuoso work published here for the first time and now much performed. Recorded Slatford/Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields (EMI). AMEB (Australian Syllabus) 2004. Orchestral material on hire from Yorke Edition (notSpartan).Pr ogramme Note:As a young professional player in the 1960s, my work as a double bassist with chamber ensembles and small orchestras took me all over the world. This presented an unparalleledopportunity to scour libraries and archives wherever I went. Long before the advent of the photocopier and e-mail, research was far more challenging than it is today. Eastern Europe was particularly difficult to access, withmanycollections kept under lock and key for all but a few hours a week. One quickly found colleagues who were keen to share information gleaned in passing, even though they had no specific interest in one's own particularspecialism (it is so often the peripheral topics that fascinate as much as the main subject under investigation, and one can quickly be side-tracked into political and social issues that have only slender bearing on the job inhand!).In the early 1970s James Brown, the then sub-principal oboist of the English Chamber Orchestra with whom I was working at the time, stumbled across a small collection of double bass manuscripts at the RoyalDanish State Library in Copenhagen. They were by Franz Anton Leopold Keÿper (b. c.1756, d. Copenhagen 7 June 1815), a double bassist of Dutch origin who worked as principal of the Royal Chapel Orchestra in Copenhagen.Keÿper's son was the bassoonist Franz Jacob August Keÿper (1792-1859). The collection included a number of concertos, some chamber music, and various naïve fragments. Although hardly the work of a Mozart or Haydn, the style is characteristic of the period. For an instrument such as the double bass, whose 18th century solo repertoire is largely written for tunings that are no longer in everyday use, Keÿper's music is easily approachablein its.

The Missa Tempore Quadragesimae was completed on March 31, 1794. Although the work incorporates but a single quotation of plainsong, in the Et incarnatus est, it exhibits in its economy of means and essentially homophonic style the chief characteristics of music written in response to the demands of liturgical reform at Salzburg during the 1790s. May also be used, without the Gloria, during Advent. Score available separately - see item CA.5032700.

Thi s nine-movement psalm composition allows all the participants to shine, in some cases with rich virtuosity: the string ensemble in the opening Sonata; the solo singers and choir in the chaconne-like first vocal movement, Singet dem Herrn; also the solo singers in two duets (alto + tenor, soprano + alto), an alto solo and an extensive bass solo; the choir in two further movements - a fugue on the 6th verse of the psalm Es stehet herrlich und prachtig fur ihm and the concluding movement in two sections, Betet an den Herrn, which ends with a brilliant fugue on Es furchte ihn alle Welt. This is a festive sacred work suitable for many occasions (including weekday Epiphany psalm services and for services on the 4th Sunday after Easter). New edition of this enigmatic, single-movement work for full orchestra lasting 13 minutes and dating from the early-1930s. In his preface, Gerard McBurney comments that, Despite the music's modernist surface, the Chant symphonique's 'three closely integrated movements' correspond rather neatly to a traditional sonata-form exposition, development and recapitulation. There is even an overall tonality of sorts - D major. But 'parts', 'moods', keys and cadences are all subjected in this unusual work to tremendous pressure and distortion, so that we quickly begin to suspect that something other, different and more mysterious, is really going on here..

Vern on Park, Stockport’s oldest park, was created on land donated by Lord Vernon (George John Warren). It was built by poor mill workers who called it pinch-belly park and opened on 20th September 1858. Comprising twenty-one acres, it houses a museum, a bandstand, ornamental fountains, a fernery, rockery, borders and sunken rose garden as well terraced walkways that overlook the river and weir. The piece depicts a solitary walker engrossed in his own thoughts on a winter’s day, the landscape, and the park’s Victorian past.At the very end of the piece a reminder of the park’s Victorian origins can be detected in a quote from Elgar’s Salut d’amour of 1899, which may well have been played by a band in the bandstand. Stockport market celebrated its 750th anniversary in 2010. It dated back to September 1260 when a Royal Charter allowed Robert de Stokeport, the Mayor, to hold a weekly market within the defensive walls of the Norman Castle on the present site of Castle Yard. The Glass Umbrella was a popular name given to the 1861 covered market built of timber, glass and iron - nine bays with open sides and a glass canopy. In 1912, one bay was removed to enable electric trams and trolley buses to turn a sharp corner. The piece depicts a lively market day, the multiculturalism of the present day and the old cries of pick and pay without delay. The bells of St Mary’s Church are depicted by a cascading peel tuned to the ten bells of the church tower, and a fleeting reference to John Wainwright’s famous Christmas hymn Christians Awake, and the Westminster chimes striking the hour from St Mary’s, bring to piece to a conclusion. Separate parts are provided for recorder and oboe.

Moonlight Serenade was composed in 1939, by Glenn Miller in his typically American big-band style. It was an immediate success and it even became the signature tune of Glenn Miller. The catchy melody has since been used in various films and television series. It has been performed in many styles, from romantic to swinging. The Flanders Recorder Quartet likes to play this work with a low recorder consort: tenor, F bass, C bass, great bass (each instrument then plays an octave lower). This gives the work a slightly “close harmony†feel. Of course the more usual line-up also does the music justice.
