Par HANNICKEL MIKE. STAMPEDE!!! takes us back to an old American West of longhorn cattle-drives, chuck wagons, campfires and trail songs. Based on several authentic cowboy songs, STAMPEDE!!! opens at dawn (birdcalls included) with the “Cowboy’s Gettin’ Up Holler”. Lively fiddle and harmonica motifs and an eloquent scoring of “Good-bye, Old Paint” are just part of this contribution to Grade 3 concert band literature by Mike Hannickel. “The Chisholm Trail” (a true cowboy classic) figures importantly at the beginning and, in a driving re-harmonization, leads to the thrilling conclusion. / Niveau : 3 / Répertoire / Concert Band ou Harmonie

'El Cid' musically portrays the thrilling adventures and conquests of Rodrigo DĂ­az de Vivar, a nobleman and military leader in medieval Spain. This rewarding work uses an infectious Spanish rhythmic ostinato (3+3, 2+2+2 in 3/4 time) that undergirds the main theme, driving the piece as it builds. Hinting at the possibility of visitors from another world coming to earth in ancient times, Richard's musical adventure for second year players evokes feelings of excitement and also mystery. Using dark harmonies, driving rhythms, and a brief lyric section in the middle this is a great teaching tool as well as just plain fun.

This invigorating work makes great use of percussion. Reminiscent of Holst's famous portrayal of Mars the driving rhythmic motif is immediately introduced with rhythmic hits reinforced in the upper brass and woodwinds. Several themes are layered for an effect that is easy to achieve with bands at this level. A brief lyrical section provides some creative harmonies which will help develop the musicianship of your band. The opening material then returns for a powerful conclusion. Highly recommended!

The Pagan Dances completes the cycle of four primitive works for symphonic band that also includes Visions Macabre Invocation and Toccata and Torch Dance. The work challenges performers to focus on articulation and expression, while giving the percussion section a driving rhythm to maintain the energy.
