This piece depicts the refined beauty of the Grand Canyon at sunrise and sunset. These are the best times to view the Canyon with the sun low in the sky casting shadows that give depth and form to the vast panorama. Angel’s Gate is one of the many named rock formations in the canyon. The composer has tried to depict the sights and sounds of dawn birdsong in the early morning sky and the gradual revelation of the Canyon itself as sunlight reaches into its rocky depths.Towards the end of the piece to the sound of a tolling bell we are however reminded of the dangers that the beauty of the Grand Canyon so cleverly hides.

Meditation on 'Quem Pastores Laudavere'-Carol of the Shepherds is based on the hymn tune 'Quem Pastores Laudavere' which dates back to the 14th century and is widely known throughout the Christian world. Although the melody has been set to a number of different texts in different countries it was originally a carol celebrating the Christmas story in particular the visit of the Angel Gabriel to the shepherds.

The Swiss composer Franco Cesarini has waited a long time to write his first symphony and after years of considering and drafting this Archangels Symphony Symphony no. 1 is a vast composition consisting of highly dramatic language intense thematic developments and frequent polyphonic elaborations.The thematic material is taken from old Gregorian melodies that form the basis for the entire work which is despite the title a non-programmatic work. It consists out of 4 movements: Gabriel the gentle archangel; the supreme healer Raphael; the energetic archangel Michael the Prince of the heavenly host; and surprisingly the archangel Urile the?forgotten? archangel.A true masterpiece and a fantastic musical challenge!

The Suite 'Aquarium' is Johan de Meij's third composition for symphonic band and features six tropical fishes each of them represented by a motif and surfacing as such in several guises. The composition consists of three movements of which the second and third merge uninterruptedly into each other. I) Allegretto grazioso (Neon Tetra Electric Eel and Angelfish) II) Andante / Adagio (Sea Horse and Zebrafish) III) Finale: Allegro giocoso (Guppy & Co.) The Neon Tetra motif functions as a kind of 'Leitmotiv' and descibes the beautifully coloured frisky fish: A number of variants have been derived from this theme and will also appear in the other movements.The Electric Eel in fact is not represented by a motif but by a rhythm based on the restless electric pulses made audible in some aquaria. The Angel fish is represented by elegant cluster chords. In the second movement the Sea Horse emerges out of the water vegetation and starts a dialogue with the Zebrafish which is represented by one melodic phrase in unison getting more and more threatening by added parallel fifths and octaves. Simultaneously with the Sea Horse motif the Neon Tetra theme emerges this time in 3/4 time and in Eb minor. The third movement starts with only two instruments (trumpet and xylophone) but as it is often the case with Guppies their number rapidly increases. Piccolo and Alto Saxophone introduce the Guppy Theme followed by several instrumental combinations. Every theme from the first movement 'swims by' once more after which the principal motif leads us to a brilliant ending.
