A beautiful jazz chorale sets the stage for this straight-ahead chart. As you might guess from the title, the main part of this tune and the solo section are based on the two minor chords that Coltrane used in his classic modal composition Impressions. The 32-bar AABA structure of the original has been compressed to 16 bars to make it easier for younger players.

The original occasion for the composition of Cantata BWV 51 is not known. The unusual festive scoring with trumpet and solo soprano, and the virtuoso demands of these parts seem to indicate a special occasion, such as New Year, a town council election or the birthday of a prominent person. Bach only added the liturgical designation of the 15th Sunday after Trinity to the titlepage of his score later. The text is directed to the praise of God and thanks for the goodness he has shown, combined with a plea for support in the future. The chorale verse Sei Lob und Preis mit Ehren is not a typically straightforward four-part setting, but is incorporated into an instrumental trio movement. Together with the following Alleluja, it forms a brilliant concertante conclusion to the work. New, revised edition. Score available separately - see item CA.3105100.

Als o available for trombone and piano (HL44007077) Philip Sparke's Trombone Concerto was written for Olaf Ott, principal trombonist with the Berlin Philharmonic. The concerto is in traditional three-movement form and the whole work could be seen as a dramatic soliloquy for the soloist, who starts in earnest and agitated mood but, as the concerto progresses, is able to take a more optimistic tone before ending the work with what could be called a “symphonic samba.†Movement 1 begins darkly until the solo part introduces a more positive theme - only to be “overruled†by a faster, troubled accompaniment; the movement closes over a sombre drum ostinato. Movement 2 opens with a heartfelt “plea†in the accompaniment that is echoed by the soloist, who then plays a simple chorale melody introducing a delicate central section. A chant-like tune leads to a joyous climax, heralding a return of the opening material. Movement 3 casts all troubles aside in a joyful samba - a jazz-influenced central tune explores the higher ranges of the trombone before the samba rhythms set up a “contest†between trombone and piano. The soloist is the eventual “winner†(of course) and celebrates by reintroducing the samba melody before bringing the work to a virtuosic close.

The cantata for the 20th Sunday after Trinity. Ah! I see now, as I to the wedding bidden, BWV 162 was first performed on 25 October 1716 in the Castle church at Weimar. During the first year in his position as Thomaskantor, Bach made a revival performance of the cantata on 10 October 1723. For this Leipzig version he added an additional obbligato voice in the first movement and in the final chorale he added a Corno da tirarsi, which played colla-parte with the soprano. However, we do not know what this mysterious instrument looked like. For performances today we recommend using a trumpet or a slide trumpet. The cantata begins not with an introductory chorus, but rather with a sonorous bass aria with a string accompaniment and obbligato trumpet. The following movements, movement 2 through 5, are also performed by vocal soloists. The third movement, a soprano aria, presents a peculiarity: the obbligato wind parts were not contained in the original version of this cantata. Our edition offers a reconstruction for the flute, made by the famous Bach interpreter and expert, Masaaki Suzuki.

Fanfare from Monument to Color and Light opens the set (from the orchestral tone poem written for the Colorado National Monument centennial), with melodic lines jumping through the shimmering ensemble. Front Range Fanfare, originally for brass ensemble (114-41470), was inspired by Ewazen's first glimpse of the Rockies rising up from the plains of Colorado. Says Ewazen, It is grand and majestic, with bold, melodic motives that leap and jump, leading to a resonant and celebratory chorale, bringing these two fanfares to a heroic finale..
