The Geuzen Medal is an annual award given to people or organizations who have found unique ways to further democracy in the world and help eliminate dictatorships, racism, and discrimination. The original Geuzen fought against Spanish imperialism in Holland during the16th century. During the Second World War a group resisting the Nazis also named themselves De Geuzen. Jan de Haan incorporates Psalm 43, sung by a group of condemned prisoners shortly before their execution in 1943, into Geuzen Medal Fanfare, composed for the 25th bestowal of this special award.

Text: Angier Brock.
SATB Chorus, Organ Duration: 7' Text: Angier Brock Composed: 2010 Published by: Subito Music Publishing YouTube: Ms. Brock’s moving poem is lyrical throughout. Even in its beautiful originality, the poem invokes The Book of Common Prayer and biblical scripture (the latter through references to dust and breath from Genesis 2 to the final line of the poem invoking the opening of Psalm 62). Ms. Brock’s poetry is also filled with wonderful twists on traditional texts (such as in the creative and reverse naming of the Trinity in speaking of Inventing Wind, Generous Christ, and Luminous God). Musically, the main melodic material of the piece is immediately heard on a solo organ color accompanied by organ strings over a recurring pedal pulse on the pitch C. The chorus soon enters with the first stanza of the text. As this stanza unfolds, the harmony starts to gradually change as the pulsing pedal rhythm begins to move upward by step. An organ interlude, reflective of the opening introduction, soon emerges (though now over a C-sharp recurring pedal pulse), and leads to a similar choral setting as found in stanza one. As the poem’s second stanza moves forward, it eventually folds into the more harmonically rich stanza three. A fast, dance-like section evolves at Inventing Wind, what a lively dance your energy creates! eventually bringing the work to its climax point. The spirit of dance soon subsides and leads to a quiet and gentle close on the words …for you alone my soul in silence waits. Minimum order quantity: 8 copies. WINNING PERFORMANCE EBBC LILLE 2016Raveling, Unraveling In Search of ‘La Valse’ was written for the Cory Band as their own-choice test piece for the 2016 European Brass Band Championships in Lille. The piece found its genesis in Sparke’s The Unknown Journey (2014) forconcert band, and the use of Ravel’s La Valse as a structural undercurrent to the original piece is an act of reverence. Sparke’s aim was to produce a work that is organic rather than episodic in nature. The composer’s view is that little inmusic does this better than La Valse and for this reason he uses various sections of this masterpiece, both manipulated and quoted verbatim (including much of its stunningclosing passages) to provide the overall geography of his new work. Asthe music progresses, more of the Ravel appears, surfacing completely as the piece reaches its climax - a gesture of homage to the French master. WINNAAR EBBC LILLE 2016Raveling, Unraveling In Search of ‘La Valse’ is geschreven voor de Britse Cory Band als keuzewerk voor de Europese Brassband Kampioenschappen van 2016 in Lille. De oorsprong ligt in Sparkes The Unknown Journey (2014) voorharmonieorkest.

The composer writes: In Alman, which consists of 3 movements, it is the dynamic waves that are making the form. Constantly something is created, sheltered by these waves, things are hidden or are having their own expression. In this light the first movement can be seen as a big curve, and the second movement as a mosaic. In the manic last movement, the music is whipped against climax. This movement is supported by a quotation of the young Danish poet Michael Strunge. The title of Alman, is the name of a dance (Fitzwilliam Virginal Book), even though this is hardly heard in my quartet.

Atlantic Odyssey was commissioned by the band program at Oakton High School in Vienna, VA, and its director, Dr. Cheryl Newton. The piece is in two extended movements and seeks to portray an imaginary yacht journey off the eastern seaboard of the USA. The first movement, Sunrise at Sea and the Ocean Awakes, opens with an atmospheric depiction of dawn at sea. Floating woodwinds soar above surging brass until a climax heralds the rising sun. Daylight reveals distant horizons and the prospect of a calm voyage, but the sea is never tamed and a light breeze whips up spray around the boat until a couple of high waves rock the boat alarmingly. But the sea soon calms again and the journey continues serenely. The second movement, Homeward Bound and Spindrift, sees us turn for home, the boat scything calmly through the gentle waves in perfect sailing conditions. But once again conditions change, a stiff breeze tugs at the sails and for a moment we are once again at the mercy of the wind and waves. A moment of calm returns but we are suddenly sprayed by spindrift as a gale picks up. The boat is in danger of overturning but we manage to trim the sail and take advantage of the strong winds to enjoy and exhilarating journey home.

Inspi red by Chinese tradition, this concerto-like dance suite includes: 1. Lion Dance, 2. YangKo, and 3. Muqam. Each movement draws from melodies and rhythms characteristic of various regions of China many centuries ago. CHINESE FOLK DANCE SUITE is available for violin with full orchestra, or as a recital work with piano.Supported by a major commissioning award from the Serge Koussevitzky Music Foundation in the Library of Congress, Chinese Folk Dance Suite is written for solo violin and orchestra; it was premiered by The Women’s Philharmonic with violin soloist Terrie Baune, conducted by Apo Hsu, on March 10, 2001, at Yerba Buena Center For the Arts Theater in San Francisco.Inspired by various Chinese traditional folk dances, the suite has three movements:I. Lion Dance. Traditionally, people dance with richly decorated hand-made lions, accompanied by percussion ensemble, to celebrate happy occasions and major festivals throughout the country. In this composition, I use Chinese drum and other percussion instruments in the background, to form a dynamic and rhythmic texture responding to the solo part, which imitates the tunes played on the suona (traditional Chinese trumpet). The pitch materials came from the traditional Guangdong tune “Dragon Boat Racing,†and the Chaozhou tune “Lion Playing Ball.â€II. YangKo. Originating in northern China, this is a major folk dance form in mass performance popularized in the country. In YangKo performance, people play rhythmic patterns on the drums hung around their waists while singing and dancing. In the second movement, I imagined a warm scene of YangKo dancing in distance. The solo violin plays a sweet and gracious melodic line while all members of the orchestra sing non-pitched syllables in different layers as the soft background, to imitate the percussion sound which produces the ever-going pulse.III. Muqam. This large-scale music and dance form, from the Uygur nationality in Xinjiang province, originated in the 15th century. My third movement use a 7/8 meter and the melodic style of Muqam music. The fiery dancing gesture culminates in the sustained climax section at the end of the work, after a colorful violin cadenza in both improvisational singing style and polyphonic writing with woven lines.

Conte xtures: Riots -Decade '60 was commissioned by Zubin Mehta and the Southern California Symphony Association after the successful premiere of the Concerto for Four Percussion Soloists and Orchestra. It was written during the spring and summer months of 1967. Riots stemming from resentment against the racial situation in the United States and the war in Vietnam were occurring throughout the country and inevitably invaded the composer's creative subconscious. Contextures, as the title implies, was intended to exploit various and varying textures. As the work progressed the correspondence between the fabric of music and the fabric of society became apparent and the allegory grew in significance. So I found myself translating social aspects into musical techniques. Social stratification became a polymetric situation where disparate groups function together. The conflict between the forces of expansion and the forces of containment is expressed through and opposition of tonal fluidity vs. rigidity. This is epitomized in the fourth movement, where the brass is divided into two groups - a muted group, encircled by the unmuted one, which does its utmost to keep the first group within a restricted pitch area. The playful jazzy bits (one between the first and second movements and one at the end of the piece) are simply saying that somehow in this age of turmoil and anxiety ways of having fun are found even though that fun may seem inappropriate. The piece is in five movements, with an interlude between the first and second movements. It is scored for a large orchestra, supplemented by six groups of percussion, including newly created roto-toms (small tunable drums) and some original devices, such as muted gongs and muted vibraphone. There is also an offstage jazz quartet: bass, drums, soprano saxophone and trumpet. The first movement begins with a solo by the first clarinetist which is interrupted by intermittent heckling from his colleagues leading to a configuration of large disparate elements. The interlude of solo violin and snare-drum follows without pause. The second movement, Prestissimo, is a display piece of virtuosity for the entire orchestra. The third movement marks a period of repose and reflection and calls for some expressive solos, particularly by the horn and alto saxophone. The fourth movement opens with a rather lengthy oboe solo, which is threatened by large blocks of sound from the orchestra, against an underlying current of agitated energy in the piano and percussion. This leads to a section in which large orchestral forces oppose one another, ultimately bringing the work to a climax, if not to a denouement. Various thematic elements are strewn all over the orchestra, resulting in the formation of a general haze of sound. A transition leads to the fifth movement without pause. The musical haze is pierced gently by the offstage jazz group as if they were attempting to ignore and even dispel the gloom, but a legato bell sound enters and hovers over both the jazz group and the orchestra, the latter making statements of disquieting finality. Two films were conceived to accompany portions of Contextures. The first done by Herbert Kosowar, was a chemography film (painting directly into the film using dyes and various implements) with fast clips of riot photographs. The second was a film collage made by photographically abstracting details from paintings of Reginald Pollack. The purpose was to invoke a non-specific response - as in music - but at the same time to define the subject matter of the piece. The films were constructed to correspond with certain developments in the piece and in no way affect the independence and musical flow of the piece, having been made after the piece was completed. Contextures: Riots - Decade '60 is dedicated to Mehta, the Southern California Symphony Association and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. The news of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King came the afternoon of the premiere, April 4, 1968. That evening's performances, and also the succeeding ones, were dedicated to him and a special dedication to Dr. King has been inserted into he score. All the music that follows the jazz group - beginning with the legato bell sound playing the first 2 notes to We shall overcome constitutes a new ending to commemorate Dr. King's death.

This work, which was written shortly after the Trumpet Sonata and the Five Pieces For Piano, was first performed by Georgina Dobree and the composer at the 1957 Darmstadt Festival. The score was subsequently lost, but was rediscovered by Kevin Corner in 1983. 'This is a dramatic, emphatic and at times extravagant piece. The first movement is a Moderato reaching through wide-flung clarinet lines and keen piano gestures to a great climax near the end. Then comes a quick movement, a kind of demonic scherzo, including a cadenza for the clarinettist. The finale is an Adagio that gradually achieves a sort of simplicity, though not before exceedingly testing times for both players. Duration c. 25mins.

Written in 2001, this work was conceived by the need to enlarge the repertoire of works for solo cello, an important goal since the repertoire of such works is limited. Most cellists are limited to performances of such well-known solo works as the Suites of Bach, written almost 300 years ago, as well as other classics of the genre by Max Reger, Zoltan Kodaly, Benjamin Britten, Gaspar Cassado, Enric Casals, etc.The intention of the Suite Exotique is to revolutionize the concept of the Baroque suite by transforming the suite into a collection of modern dances, which are both contemporary and widely recognized today. Thus, the dances of the Baroque suite, such as Allemande, Courante, Sarabande are substituted for the Tango, Milonga, Blues in such a way that the traditional formal structure of six movements of Baroque dances is modernized by rhythms and contemporary styles which coexist in the Modern world, but are separate from and do not pertain to those works which are normally considered to belong to the realm of cultured music.Apart from the fusion represented by the mixture of a Baroque genre with modern, urban musical language found in this work, the subtitle exotica is appropriate due to the originality of writing such a work for cello solo. This work allows the interpreter to explore and take full advantage of their technical, artistic and expressive abilities. This work establishes a total symbiosis between the instrument and the evolutionary transformation of its musical language which in turn creates a style adapted to the expressive requirements of the work itself. The specific techniques and qualities of the cello are placed in service of the required style and concept of each movement of the Suite. At the same time those stylistic characteristics are transformed and adapted to the particular characteristics of the cello and taking full advantage of the instruments polyphonic, sonic, aesthetic qualities as well as its timbre. The Suite Exotique was premiered in August, 2003 during the International Music Festival of Ibiza by the Russian cellist Svetlana Tovstukha.

This work was written in 2005, prompted by the composer's determination that young members of junior, music school and conservatoire wind ensembles should not be limited to transcriptions for lack of original compositions, especially contemporary ones. The new devices used in the Little Suite are suitable for student players to try out. Indeed, they enjoy them - for instance, purring or whistling into the instrument. Each of the three-or-four-minute movements of this four-movement work can also be performed separately. The titles of the movements are the following: 1. In cheerful mood, 2. Song, 3. Joke, 4. March. This music in modern idiom, full ofinteresting new effects, offers young players an opportunity for enjoyable music-making together, and at the same time prepares them for playing more difficult contemporary works. The keyboard music of English composer William Byrd (1543--1623) has long been regarded as some of the most representative works produced during the late Renaissance period. The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, the quintessential source of music for this idiom of the time, is also the source of the three Byrd titles included in this suite: The Bells, John, and Sellinger's Round. The arrangements by Douglas E. Wagner are richly scored to flatter the sound of ensembles of any size. Care has been taken to eliminate technical obstacles for younger players, with musically interesting individual parts a strong consideration. (4:25).
