Following the cantata Himmelskonig, sei willkommen, BWV 182, the present cantate was the second work which Bach composed under the terms of his new contract. The extraordinary musical ambition evident in the first Weimar cantatas may have had its roots in the fact htat Bach aspired to become Drese's successor as Court Kapellmeister. Bohusl av Martinu wrote his First Violin Concerto in Paris in 1932-33, this work having been commissioned by the violin virtuoso Samuel Dushkin. However, it was never performed during the composer's lifetime and was even considered lost after his death. It was not until 1961 that musicologist and collector Hans Moldenhauer bought it from Boaz Piller, contrabassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Moldenhauer approached Czech violinist Josef Suk, who gave the world premiere of the work with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Georg Solti in October 1973.This piano reduction is based on the musical text of the first edition. Adler's new Fanfare was composed in the Summer of 2008 for the Cincinnati University Youth Wind Ensemble, and premiered in March 2010 by that ensemble under the direction of Dr. Ann Porter. The majestic opening gives way to an extended interplay, which the composer has marked as happy and bouncy. Timpani is used sparingly, adding punctuation throughout, joining the ensemble for a rousing finale. For advanced performers.
