o.Op. 82 TrV 133- We are grateful to the University of Edinburgh Library Centre for Research Collections for providing us with access to a manuscript of this work. At shelf-mark Mus.M.645 is a set of parts in the hand of an unknown copyist annotated by John Parr (the bassoonist of Sheffield) who also wrote a full score and second copies of the bassoon and bass parts. The score is dated 1930 and the bassoon part 1934. It is here entitled merely 'duet for flute and bassoon with orchestra' and ascribed to R. Strauss.   We are also grateful for advice from Dr Christian Wolf of the Richard-Strauss-Institut in Munich whohave access to a copy of  'der Zweikampf' made by Cl. Schubert but the Richard-Strauss-Archiv in Garmisch-Partenkirchen will not permit them to make a complete copy for us but has permitted sample pages to be copied confirming the identity of the music. They also affirm the considerable doubt as to Richard Strauss being the composer however no other composer has been suggested in his stead.  In the Strauss bibliography a date of composition of 1884 is given when he was twenty years old.   We would also like to acknowledge with thanks the help of Drs Jenny Nex and Lance Whitehead of Edinburgh in deciphering the manuscript and advising on the piano reduction.   In editing the work we have corrected a few evident errors and made the dynamics consistent. There was no given tempo indication in some of the parts but Parr added 'allegro moderato' which is also the tempo indication in the Munich manuscript.  He also suggested the bass pizzicato in most of the polacca but perhaps this was intended only for the double bass should one be present. There are some discrepancies between the Edinburgh score and parts which we have resolved somewhat arbitrarily on musical grounds.  The differences between the Munich and Edinburgh versions are mostly small as far as we can discern; the

Score-Silvestre Revueltas' ‘Sensemaya’ was written in 1937 for chamber orchestra; one year later the composer transcribed it for a huge orchestra of twenty-seven wind instruments fourteen percussion instruments and strings. The rhythms are laid out precisely and have considerable visceral impact very much in a manner that recalls Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. However Revueltas' masterful orchestration and ability to evoke the ancient Maya civilization with decidedly modern music are uniquely his own. It is a unique orchestral spectacle something only Revueltas could have written and in its way it is one of the most brutal works of its time. The workbegins with a low note in the bassoon as the percussion plays the sinuous syncopated rhythm that drives the work. Soon a solo horn enters playing the first of this work's two major themes a muscular ominous motif. Other horns join the first one to play the theme growing louder and more emphatic but rigorously yoked to the underlying rhythm. Eventually the horns blast as loudly as they can with obsessive trills on the bassoon far underneath and the violins enter with the slashing second theme. The horns take up this new theme and bring it to a climax after which the music returns to its opening texture. This recapitulation brings with it a mood of foreboding. The rhythm becomes even more obsessive and finally the music reaches a massive climax during which both themes are played overlapping sometimes in part and sometimes in whole by woodwinds brass and violins in what sounds like a musical riot. The coda feels like the final dropping of a knife.

(1993)Since its premiere by the Baltimore Symphony in 1994 at Carnegie Hall the GRAMMY®-winning Metropolis Symphony has entered the orchestral repertoire and been performed by orchestras all over the world.Metropolis Symphony is a five-movement musical response to the world of Superman; Red Cape Tango Daugherty's final work based on the Superman mythology is set after Superman's fight to the death withDoomsday. The principal melody (first heard in the bassoon) is derived from the medieval Latin death chant Dies Irae. This dance of death is conceived as a tango presented at times like a concertino comprising stringquintet brass trio bassoon chimes and castanets. The orchestra alternates between legato and staccato sections to suggest a musical bullfight.

There is no reference to the origin, occasion or a performance of the Sinfonia concertante in E-flat for Violin, Viola and Orchestra, K. 364 (320d) because in all probability it was composed in Salzburg (presumably in summer or early autumn, 1779): Mozart seems to have had no reason to write about it. It was apparently in Paris that he first had the occasion of giving the genre of the ; Symphonie concertante his special attention. On April 5, 1778, he wrote to his father: ; Now I shall write a sinfonie concertante for flute wendling, oboe Ramm, Punto horn, and Ritter bassoon. Even more discouraging must have been the fact that he had similardifficulties in Paris in having the works performed as he had in Mannheim. After the organizier of the Concerts spirituels, Le Gros, contrary to his promise, did not include the mentioned ; sinfonie concertante in his program. Mozart had no reason to compose any more for this genre in Paris. After Mozart's return to Salzburg, he might have been eager to introduce the new genre there, especially since adequate instrumentalists were available. However additional parts are included for Flutes Clarinets in Bb Horns and Trombones which double the chorus lines and can be used either to reinforce the choral line or to replace it completely to provide an orchestra-only concert version. One chorus part is included in the orchestral set and additional copies areavailable should they be required. What can you say about this piece? It is probably Elgar's best known work.
