Full Score-Full orchestra score for Per Nørgård's Symphony No. 5 (1987-90 rev.1991). Manuscript copy. Programme note: My 5th Symphony was commissioned by the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and premiered on December 6th 1990 by and dedicated to the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen.  After the premiere in 1990 I decided to revise the beginning (and only the beginning) of the work. The first pages of the score were discarded and about 20 seconds of new music was written in the summer of 1991. The new and final versionwas premiered on 1st of May 1992.  The symphony progresses without pauses between movements often in several layers of tempo with mutual ´golden section´proportions. The listener´s experience of form in the work will therefore depend on the directions of his own attention. But so far as overall divisions are concerned four sections (perhaps five) - running into each other - can be traced: an expansive cascading introduction a kind of scherzo an chaconne-like adagio and a kind of finale again with the phenomenon of ´cascades´ as a main idea. However as the course is from time to time thrown into chaos by convulsive twitching and crises other experiences of form are opened out within a spectrum from wild to cautious from dramatic to contemplative in a universe of tempi which can suggest the title of a book of poems by the Danish Michael Strunge (1958-1986): ´Velocity of life.´  A listener described the symphony as “a walk with a fire-breathing dragon” and a reviewer described it with words like “a pacifist in times of war”. Anyway words and programme note are – as Carl Nielsen said about titles – only “road signs” for personal experiences in the area of music itself.  Per Nørgård

For Orchestra With Solo Clarinet In B-Flat-Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie is one of two concertante works completed premiered and published during his lifetime. He was commissioned to write it in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910. Debussy orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. While transferring the clarinet part from the already published version for clarinet and piano he made a few subtle changes particularly in m. 201 which has been a bone of contention among clarinettists for over a century.The present scholarly-critical publication is the first Urtext edition of the orchestral version. Composed in the summer of 1984 Yorkshire Ballad was premiered at the Kansas Bandmasters Association Convention by Claude T. Smith and the Kansan Intercollegiate Band. Since its publication it has become one of the composer'smost popular works and has been arranged for a variety of ensembles. The composer writes “I composed this little piece so that younger players would have the opportunity to play a piece that is more or less in the style of(Grainger's) Irish Tune from County Derry.”

Study Score-Declaration Suite consists of the orchestral movements from 'Declaration - a symphonic narrative' for Orchestra two solo speakers and speaking chorus. In its original form the work includes a setting of theDeclaration of Independence.The composition was comissioned by Station WRC and WRC-TV of the National Broadcasting Company Washington D. C. for the National Symphony Orchestra of that city and was composed during thesummer and fall of 1956. The National Symphony Orchestra Dr. Howard Mitchell conducting gave the first complete performances at the Inaugural Concert in Constitution Hall Washington D. C. Solo for Oboe or Violin-'The title only appears frivolous to those who have lived little. With the passage of time the seasons that pass the differences in quantity and quality of light of temperature and weather become of ever greater importance in the meaning of our individual existence. This transformation follows the path of our lives and often mimes in front of our very own eyes incredulous and wondrous events that we can only experience once in a lifetime: our birth our blossoming our aging and our death. Such a subject could well take up ten years of my life. This was the case. Nevertheless everything started very innocently with a proposition from my friend François Leleux to write him a double concerto that he could play with Natalia Gutman initially named ‘Musica Concertante’. It was with this second proposition from François for another double concerto this time with Lisa Batiashvili that the idea came to me for a cycle of four concertos with each time a different instrument from the string quartet to join the oboe. The automnal colours of the cello are a perfect match for the retrospective nature of the first completed concerto in the cycle. ‘concerto nostalgico l’automne’ whilst the love and the first child of the Leleux-Batiashvili couple could only bring Spring to mind hence the ‘Concerto amoroso le printemps’ was born. When Jean-Marc Bador asked me to be an associate of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris for two years it was quite naturally that I thought of completing this cycle for François Leleux with winter ‘Concerto tenebroso’ created in January 2010 with Lise berthaud playing the viola. All that remained was for me to conclude with a work that reunited all four protagonsits. It was summer the ‘Concerto luminoso’ which took on this role’.

This short orchestral piece is a tone poem based on a passage from one of Hans Christian Andersen’s lesser known fairytales THE WIND TELLS ABOUT WALDEMAR DAAE AND HIS DAUGHTERS a mighty allegory about the transitoriness of Life about Vanity and Pride and the inevitable victory of Death (alias the wind) whose scything ravaging is sublimely depicted by Andersen in these few truly breathtaking lines: 'And Winter rushed Winter and Summer they rushed and they rush like I rush like the howling snow the flurrying apple blossom the scurrying foliage; rush! rush! The people too!'

Hawkes Pocket Scores HPS 1528-Completed in short score in 2006 the composer played the symphony to his son Miko aj on the piano that summer commenting on many details. It fell to Miko aj to complete the orchestration following his father’s death in 2010.The impetus for the work came from the director of the Tansman Festival in ód birthplace of the naturalised French composer Alexandre Tansman. The work’s principal motives are based on letters taken from Tansman’s name. The 38-minute symphony is scored for large orchestra including quadruple woodwind and brass and prominent parts for piano organ and three bass drums.

Britten's ballet for small Orchestra was first performed by the students of the Royal College Of Music Sinfonietta at the Royal College in January 2004. The piece itself was written in 1931 during the summer holidays after the end of Britten’s first year at the Royal College of Music at the age of seventeen. Having been advised to send the original score to the Camargo Society then the foremost promoter of ballet in the UK but Britten was without success and never revised the work.

This exceptional work by Frederick Delius consists of two contrasting movements (one lyrical one dance-like) taken from unaccompanied part songs to be sung on a summer's night on the water. Treat your students to this artful concert setting for string ensemble.
