François Couperin, et tout autant son oncle, Louis, disparu jeune, sont mon tuf musical. Pas une semaine sans que je lise, écoute leur musique, sans que je visite, en voisin, la paroisse - Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais, à Paris - où toute leur lignée a tenu l'orgue.
Lorsqu'Alexandre Tharaud m'a parlé de ce projet Couperin, il m'a donc semblé qu'il demandait de ne surtout pas bouger de ce jardin où j'herborisais depuis mon adolescence entre Rozeaux, Lis Naissans, Vendangeuses, Vergers fleüris, Dars homicides et autre Coucou bénévole. Comme s'il voulait un instantané, plutôt un autochrome, de ce temps arrêté - sorte de madeleine pour moi, autant que bouée dans le torrent souvent tumultueux des idées.
Nous avons tâtonné l'un l'autre. Alexandre, à sa manière précise et réfléchie, a affiné ses choix. Il a voulu d'abord me marier à une Allemande, alors que je me voyais avec Les Pavots du 27ème ordre. Puis son piano a parlé.
Les Ombres Errantes m'allaient bien : l'ombre sort toujours du tube quand j'écris la musique. Quant à errer, c'est ma pente.
Ambre nous resterons - jeu anagrammatique avec le titre de Couperin - est une méditation, lente, parfois presque arrêtée, allumée d'escarbilles aussi vite retombées. Ces quelques pages suivent pas à pas l'harmonie de la pièce tutélaire.
Couperin a déjà un bien beau Tombeau - j'ai donc fait ce cénotaphe.
Cette oeuvre, et la demande d'Alexandre Tharaud, m'ont permis d'éprouver une fois encore combien l'invention et la mémoire ont partie liée, surtout quand la fidélité les noue en un acte poétique qui devient l'enjeu même de la musique, son lieu utopique impossible à rejoindre.
