It is uncertain whether the chorale theme of 'Haydn Variations' is actually by Haydn. It is certain however that the Variations are characteristic of Brahms' mature orchestral style and his strict sense of form.With 'Academic Ouverture' the composer expressed his thanks to the University of Breslau for giving him an honorary doctorate. Although the 'brooding' 'Tragic Ouverture' which had originally been intended for this purpose seemed no longer appropriate to Brahms for that occasion it has always been a resounding success since its world premiere.

Dans sa 2e Sérénade opus 16 composée en 1858-60, Brahms se limite à la petite formation en usage pour ce genre, employant les bois et les cors par deux, ainsi que les cordes graves (sans violons!). Since the 1980s scholarly research into Reger has built up a picture of the diversity, complexity and variety of Reger's work and shown that the composer was the first to depart from the supposed logical evolution of music history. This is the full score for Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 4 The Inextinguishable the composer's most popular and most frequently recorded and performed work. Although Carl Nielsen's Symphony No. 4 was completed in 1916 and although it prominently features a thundering duel between timpani the composer did not write this work in response to World War I. Instead it is a noisy energetic thrusting paean to the inextinguishability of life itself. And as music like life in this instance is inextinguishable the four intricately interlinked movements are played without a break. In this work can be heardthe influences of Brahms Dvorak Sibelius and others all transformed by Nielsen's creative spirit. The symphony ends in grand Romantic style with a triumphant finale wherein the jagged two-note and three-note themes of the beginning are conquered by the songlike theme of the third movement.
