Five Pieces for Violin and Orchestra was commissioned by Frederick Grinke and completed on 20 December 1961. The BBC Symphony Orchestra with Frederick Grinke (violin) and conducted by the composer gave the first performanceon 31 July 1962 at the Royal Albert Hall London during the BBC Proms season.This work is so constructed that each piece is complete in itself and can be played separately while at the same time the whole set of fiveconstitutes a structural unit. A basic motif consisting of a rising semitone followed by a falling tone and its inversion plays an important part in every piece. Thus the first piece which is of a slow and meditativecharacter begins with this theme in the bass. It is also heard in the first entry of the solo part and thereafter every episode is in some way derived from it. The next piece a vigorous and strongly marked ‘allegro’ uses thesemitone of the original figure as its starting point. A second theme appears first on the horns and is later taken up by the solo violin while a third section has the initial idea as its accompaniment. Next comes an extendedscherzo in free form very closely based on initial motif. The fourth is a purely melodic piece containing allusions in its middle section to the basic figure. Here the strings only are used for accompaniment. In the firstsection violas and cellos are divided in the middle section and all the strings are used in the last which is otherwise an almost exact repetition of the opening. The Finale is a lighter movement than the others concernedmainly with giving the soloist material for display but not unconnected with what has gone before.

Yannis Xenakis and Toru Takemitsu were there, among others, and we were walking around in the dark one evening when a Topeng appeared to us, in full action: Balinese musical theatre with one actor successively playing several legendary characters by means of mask changes carried out in extreme agitation behind a curtain, accompanied by a raging gamelan. The memory of these little dramas has naturally lost much of its violence when it is evoked today in my 'Quartet VIII'. So we shall hear it here as if in a dream...'' String quartet no. 3. Par ALAKOTILA TIMO. Timo Alakotila's La cantina (String quartet no. 3, 2013) was commissioned by a distinguished Finnish string quartet Kamus. The title of the quartet in four movements was inspired by the ongoing renovation in the composer's basement (ital. La cantina) after a water damage. The first movement leads from tentative dialogues to a powerful unison. The lyrical second movement (San Giovanni) is followed by a mysterious and wistful waltz. The finale (Fretta) rushes ahead all the way until the end. Composer, musician Timo Alakotila (b. 1959) is a distinguished, active and versatile talent in the Finnish music scene whose long career working with different genres of music - folk music in particular - has been ground-breaking. Arrangeur: Robert Rainford. Par BRUCH MAZ. 7 short, melodic pieces with chances for both soloists to shine. Max Bruch (1838-1920) was a German Romantic composer, conductor and teacher. A child prodigy, he composed his first pieces at the age of nine, and went on to hold musical posts in Mannheim, Berlin and Bonn. He also spent three seasons as conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Society. In his lifetime he was known mostly as a choral composer, but it is for his first violin concerto that he is chiefly remembered now. These dances were first published in 1892 for violin and piano, although Bruch later arranged them for solo piano, and also for orchestra. The slow, stately introduction leads in to seven dances in volume one, each a charming character study. Individual movements aredramatic, then tranquil: dance-like then reflective. The third, fifth and seventh movements have the feeling of folk-dances, while the others are more lyrical and expressive. Structurally the pieces are fairly simple, with melody sections flowing in to each other. Some ideas are developed into links and codas. In this arrangement, both solo players share the melodic material fairly evenly. Each has a solo movement to play, with the other movements featuring call and answer moments, harmony sections and contrapuntal elements to enjoy. Violin and Piano reduction of Three Dances Op. 7 for Violin and Orchestra. The Three Dances are delightful miniatures written in 1915 in relatively carefree student days (relatively because the Great War was already a year old and Howells through ill health which nearly killed him in 1917 was exempted from active service). They were composed for a young fellow-student George Whittaker a highly gifted violinist who had entered the College aged only eleven. Certainly the music has no hint of the momentous events beginning to take shape and which would fundamentally affect one of his closest friends Ivor Gurney and kill a number of others.
