Ecrit en 1828, l'année de la mort du compositeur, der Hirt auf dem Felsen (Le Pâtre sur le rocher) était en quelque sorte une commande. En effet, la chanteuse d'opéra Anna Milder-Hauptmann, première Léonore dans le Fidelio de Beethoven, avait demandé à Schubert, dans des lettres datées des années 1824/1825, de lui composer une grande aria de concert. Ce dernier ne se mit toutefois au travail qu'à l'automne 1828. Il se basa sur trois poèmes différents qu'il relia pour en faire une musique à la fois brillante et évocatrice. L'apparition de la clarinette, parfois soliste, parfois écho de la voix, confère un charme tout particulier au Pâtre sur le rocher et lui assure, aujourd'hui encore, une place de choix dans le répertoire du lied.? / Voix, Clarinette Et Piano
