Anton Bruckner composed his Requiem in D minor at the young age of 24 in memory of a friend of his father's who was his patron. The work was greatly influenced by the Viennese classical style. He revised the work at the age of 70 in 1894 and held it in high regard throughout his career, even though his setting never enjoyed the popularity of similar works by Mozart or Verdi in the concert repertoire. The new edition now published represents the revised version, which can be regarded as a very personal, and at the same time impressive compositional testimony to Bruckner's artistic development on his journey towards becoming the great church musician and symphonist. Bruckner set the text of the Requiem Mass in a relatively compact form in terms of extent and scoring. The range of compositional colors stretches from Alpine-influenced writing for male voice choir (Hostias), to a five-part choral movement (Sanctus) and an unaccompanied movement (Requiem), to movements with choir and soloists. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2732000.

The Gloria, composed in early 1822 at the age of 13, is Mendelssohn's first creative venture in the field of church music on a larger scale. It is a direct result of his composition studies under the director of the Berlin Singakademie Carl Friedrich Zelter, but was no longer wholly a student work because the young composer hoped that Zelter would provide him with an opportunity to perform this work with the Singakademie. The enthusiasm for Handel and Bach which was sustained by the performances at the Singakademie influenced Mendelssohn's early creative style. In the Gloria Mendelssohn sought to emulate the model of the large-scale baroque cantata. The concluding fugue, the mysterious Qui tollis and lyrical solos ensembles in the place of solo arias give testimony to Mendelssohn's great talent and willingness to experiment. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4048300.

Today we have the freedom to demonstrate our faith as we pray in public, attend church or witness to others. But what if our faith in God was judged only by our response to crisis? Queen Esther kept her faith a secret to silently influence the Persian court, but it was dramatically demonstrated when she risked her life to plead for the salvation of her people. In Kathie Hill's Esther-Ordinary Faith, your children will learn the value of a living faith as they create a first-hand account of the events in Esther's life. In the musical, a fictional scribe, Zerox, details Esther becoming queen through God's intervention in Haman's plot and Mordecai's appointment as the king's adviser. And, as Zerox tells the story, he experiences the testimony of Esther and develops his own faith in God and His grace. All this is done through gritty songs and witty dialogue between these characters and the residents of Susa, the Susans. Songs like God Is in Control, The Eleventh Hour, While You Sleep and In That Moment, will help children understand the sovereignty of God and the confidence we can have in trusting Him with the greatest of problems by displaying our own Esther-Ordinary Faith! Ages: 2nd - 8th Grades.

From the opening 12 chimes representing the origins of the classic gospel song, this arrangement is a true inspiration. One of the most recognized sacred pieces of all time, it has been covered by artists such as Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, Wayne Newton, Anne Murray nd Johnny Cash. A testimony of God's saving grace, the song was used in Billy Graham crusades and has been sung in thousands of churches. The lyrics for As with Gladness Men of Old were written by Englishman William Dix (1837--1898) in the 1860s, reportedly on the day of the Epiphany while Dix was sick in bed. The tune was included in a collection of German chorales edited by Conrad Kocher and published in the 1830s. As a testimony to the flexibility of such music, the hymn is also sung during Thanksgiving under the title For the Beauty of the Earth. This arrangement for saxophone quartet (SATBar)---rather than favoring a soprano solo with accompaniment---strives to include all of the players in the music making, particularly by distributing the melodic material. All dynamics and articulations, minimally marked, should be taken as suggestions only, as performers are encouraged to make their own interpretations.
