This volume completes Henle's urtext series of Joseph Haydn's three piano concertos. Written in or around 1765, the delightful first concerto is ideally suited for playing at home, for the relatively undemanding part for piano (or harpsichord) is accompanied merely by a string quartet. This edition draws on the musical text in our complete edition of Haydn's works, guaranteeing an urtext of the finest quality.

Published in 1648, Heinrich Schütz’s “Geistliche Chor-Music†is still regarded as one of his seminal works.A two-volume performance edition based on Werner Breig’s revised new text was published in 2012 and 2013 (BA 5901/BA 5902).Now selected motets are being issued in separate volumes. They offer a modern notation and layout, retain the original keys and include an integrated figured bass realisation. In keeping with contemporary performance practice, the ‘choral’ parts can be performed by instruments as well as voices. Instrumental parts with underlaid words may be purchased separately for performances with instruments (see performance material for BA 5901 and BA 5902).

When we think of the cello, we automatically think of Bach’s immortal cello suites. They are the very core of cello literature, their timeless beauty accompanying cellists from their student years throughout the height of their professional careers.Consideri ng the works’ significance, the great number of editions in existence is not surprising. However, the composer’s autograph has not been preserved and is considered lost. This circumstance creates an exceptional challenge many editors faced over the years. The four autograph sources still in existence and the first print from 1824 show numerous small deviations, especially in terms of articulation markings and phrasing. In this two-volume edition of Bach’s cello suites, Andrew Talle now presents an entirely new view of the relationships between existing sources. The first volume contains the edited musical text, which comes as close to the composer’s original intention as the surviving source material allows: “This edition does not constitute a perfect reconstruction of the lost autograph; that is something no editor could claim to accomplish. Instead, I have attempted to supply musicians and researchers with a reliable version of the surviving musical text of the six cello suites, and to convey a sense of the many possibilities Bach encouraged his musicians to explore.â€The second volume presents, for the first time, synoptically arranged facsimiles of the handwritten sources as well as the first print (with Suite No. V also including Bach’s own arrangement for lute), allowing readers to compare any specific section in all sources at one glance. This allows for a straightforward and immediate consideration of all sources, making editorial decisions transparent and self-evident.Andr ew Talle’s edition is supplemented by a comprehensive discussion of the instrument for which the suites were created, as well as information regarding musical interpretation during Bach’s time.

Psalm 137 Super flumina Babylonis also known as By the rivers of Babylon was an inspiration for many composers including Camille Saint-Saëns. He repeatedly occupied himself with his psalm motet for solo soprano, mixed choir, saxophone quartet, string orchestra and organ, originally composed in 1854. Two of the four versions â?? the first version in Latin and a much later version in English for alto solo, SATB choir and piano â?? are now available for the first time in Urtext performing editions taking a meticulous account of all the sources.Saint-Sa «ns lived up to his reputation as an innovative composer by exploring the use of the saxophone family in sacred music just a few years after the invention of these instruments. The successful combination of voice and saxophone creates a special sound experience.

Separate edition from BA 5902, â??Geistliche Chor-Musicâ?? SWV 369-380, The six and seven-part motets, nos. 13-29:In 1648 Heinrich Schütz published a collection of 29 motets with five to seven parts titled â??Geistliche Chor-Musicâ? (Sacred Choir Music). Here, the term â??Chorâ? (choir) refers not only to a (large) vocal ensemble but, more generally, to a group of musicians, vocal or instrumental. As explained by Schütz in the foreword he published with the collection, all parts of the motets can be performed vocally and/or instrumentally.

Mendelssohn is considered a self-critical composer, who repeatedly reworked a number of his pieces until he deemed them worthy to be published. The path to his first Piano Trio was particularly rocky: only after several attempts was he able to complete it in the summer of 1839; it appeared in 1840 after further revisions. This perfectionism paid off, for Mendelssohn's D Minor Trio was immediately received with enthusiasm. Robert Schumann wrote: “It is the master trio of the present day, like those of Beethoven in Bb and D and that of Franz Schubert in Eb were in their time; a very beautiful composition which after years will still delight grandchildren and great-grandchildren.†Which was to prove true: even today, it numbers among the most popular works in the trio repertoire in general. The trio, taken from the volume Mendelssohn • Piano Trios HN 957, is now available from Henle for the first time also as a practical single edition.

During the last summer of his life, Franz Schubert completed the Mass in E-flat D 950. The occasion for the composition of this Missa solemnis cannot be clarified with certainty. Schubert did not live to see the premiere of his sixth mass, which was first performed posthumously in 1829 under the baton of his brother Ferdinand.Among other things, the editor has paid particular attention to the articulation. In order to be able to present Schubertâ??s differentiated use of accents in the edition, a new symbol has been introduced: an accent which is flexible with regard to its length, thus making it possible to precisely visualize its compositionally intended duration.

“Some thing quite curious, I believe†– It was thus that Robert Schumann described the Concert Piece for Four Horns and large orchestra in a letter and he did indeed break new ground with this work as far as the scoring and treatment of the instruments was concerned. When it was composed in 1849, the French horn was still fairly new, enabling players to play previously unheard-of runs and free modulations, a fact which Schumann made the most of, particularly with his scoring for four horns. Even today the Concert Piece is the romantic work for horn par excellence and a benchmark for all soloists.

Llio was composed during Berlioz's stay in Italy in 1831. In April of that year he set out from Rome, where he held a scholarship as winner of the Prix de Rome, and travelled as far as Nice on hearing that his fiancee Camille Moke had rejected him in favour of another suitor. He had intended to return to Paris to exact revenge, but then he abandoned his plan and instead spent three weeks in Nice, returning in stages to Rome. On this return journey he conceived the idea of a semi-theatrical work that combined music and monologues to express the idea of returning to life after a profound traumatic experience. The composition was finished in Rome in Iune 1831. In the spring of 1832, while staying with his parents in Dauphin, Berlioz copied the orchestral and vocal parts, and the work was first performed in conjunction with the Symphonie fantastique at the Paris Conservatoire on 9 December 1832. It was heard again three weeks later and again on 3 May 1835. While designated as the second part of the Episode in the Life of an Artist, Lelio can never- theless be performed on its own, without the Symphonie fantastique to precede it.

When composing his Spanish Dances (HN 1370), the composer and violin virtuoso Sarasate united existing material - folk songs and songs by well-known composers - with his own uniquely charming musical language. The two Dances op. 22, “Romanza andaluza†and “JotaNavarra,†were completed in 1878 during Sarasate's first concert tour through Scandinavia. After their initial performances, the lyrical “Romanza†soon outstripped its brilliant sister piece in popularity, and thereafter it was one of Sarasate's compositions that he played most often himself. Since then, this piece has lost nothing of its charm, and it is now available as a stand-alone edition in the Henle catalogue.

This volume brings together Mozart's youthful attempts at this later so central genre of the string quartet: the astonishing “Lodi Quartet†K. 80 by the only fourteen-year-old composer, the three “Quartet-Divertimen ti†K. 136-138 which are also readily played by chamber orchestras, and Mozart's first true string-quartet cycle K. 155-160 which was composed during his third (north-)Italian journey in 1772/73. Mozart's cleanly written scores of all the compositions have been preserved so that the edition stands on a secure foundation. In his informative commentary, Wolf-Dieter Seiffert, the experienced Mozart editor at G. Henle Publishers, devotes a separate, comprehensive explanatory section to the well-known articulation problem “dot or wedge.†The Armida Quartet provided artistic input for this edition.
