The trio sonata is regarded as one of the core chamber music genres of the 17th and 18th centuries. Corelli remains to this day its best-known exponent, but also before and after him there was a multitude of exceptional works in the genre that remain largely unknown today. This two-volume catalogue raisonné has finally brought these treasures to light. Thanks to support from the Balzan Foundation and the University of Zurich, this catalogue now offers the first-ever bibliography of the genre. It encompasses all the published trio sonatas of the 17th and 18th centuries, and also provides detailed information on sources and works, plus introductory commentaries. This printed catalogue will be complemented by an online database with enhanced search functions that will enable both scholars and practising musicians to explore this fascinating repertoire. Erschallet, ihr Lieder (BWV 172) is one of those early Bach cantatas which were often revived at Leipzig. The first performance of this work was given in Weimar 1714. Although only a few instrumental parts from this performance are extant, it may be assumed that at that time the cantata already had the form familiar to us from its first Leipzig revival. It was given in C major (church pitch, corresponding to D major in chamber pitch), and the first number was intended to be repeated at the end of the work.

Haydn's three Symphonies nos. 90-92 might rightly be dubbed his “Paris Symphonies Part II,†as they were commissioned in 1788/89, likewise by the Société Olympique, for which Haydn had already composed his six “Paris Symphonies†nos. 82-87 just a few years earlier. Ironically enough, Haydn would later sell these three a second time to Prince von Oettingen-Wallerstein who requested he “receive 3 new symphonies from him.†Regardless of such mercantile entanglements, Haydn shows himself to be at the full height of his mastery as a symphonist in these works. According to the autograph manuscript, the Symphony in C major no. 90 was completed in 1788 and highlights its festive character with the addition of timpani and trumpets. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

The Italian oratorio La Resurrezione (The Resurrection) was written during Handel’s time in Rome. It was performed on Easter Sunday 1708 with great splendour and extravagance by a large orchestra conducted by Arcangelo Corelli in the Palazzo Bonelli, the Roman palazzo of Handel’s patron the Marchese Francesco Maria Ruspoli. In its dramatic structure and characterisation of the protagonists, the work displays a striking affinity with Italian opera. Lucifer’s raging sixty fourth notes call to mind the demon characters in Venetian opera and Maddalena’s arias are so full of expressive power and virtuosity that Handel later incorporated one of them into his opera Agrippina. The unusual musical richness of this work and the virtuosic and masterly shaping of the arias make it a welcome addition to any concert programme.

Handel†s “Deidamia†was premièred on 10 January 1741 only a few weeks after “Imeneoâ€. The librettist Paoli Rolli , a previously unsucessful librettist for Handel, delivered with his finest work “Deidamiaâ€. On 10 February 1741 the third and final opera performances of this work took place under Handel’s direction. Oddly enough “Deidamia†would not be performed again until the beginning of the 20th century. This opera is based on the themes of humour and seriousness. The personal harmonising of Heroism (Achilles) and Love ( Deidamia ) build on the essential dramatic features of this work. “Deidamia†is the last great opera in a series of masterpieces: “Orlandoâ€, “Poroâ€, “Ezioâ€, “Ariodanteâ€, “Alcinaâ€, “Serse†and “Imeneoâ€. The vocal score is based on the Urtext of the Halle Handel Editon.

Saint-Sa ëns was a great admirer of the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt. His own symphonic poem “Danse macabre†reflects not only his affinity to medieval superstitions but also constitutes a tribute to Liszt’s “Totentanzâ€.< br>“Danse macabre†is based on the eponymous song Saint-Saëns composed in 1872 after Henri Cazalis’ poem. At its premiere, the work was not well-received; in fact it was booed, possibly due to the “diabolic†solo violin playing on an E-string that was tuned down to E-flat, which the audience might have misinterpreted as being out of tune. However within ten years the work had become so popular that Saint-Saëns quoted some of its musical themes in “The Carnival of the Animalsâ€. Since the composer’s death, “Danse macabre†is among the works most often mentioned in connection with the theatrical face of death found in popular mortuary cult.

For this scholarly-critical edition, the editor has consulted no less than 16 sources, many more than were ever used for any other edition of the Requiem; some of these sources were never evaluated before and one source, a hand-written vocal score, particularly relevant to the evaluation of the Liber scriptus, was newly discovered. As such, this edition offers new philological and editorial decisions regarding phrasing, articulation and dynamics and succeeds in presenting practical suggestions to solve musical problems and those concerning the interpretation of this famous work. This edition comprises a concise Critical Commentary in the score as well as a detailed one on the Barenreiter website. The most important editions published in the 19th century are compared with regard to musicological questions in the work. The genesis of some misunderstandings included in the 1913 and 1964 Ricordi editions is traced. The first version of the Liber scriptus for chorus is included in the appendix while the later version for mezzosoprano solo is to be found in the main part of the edition.

Published in 1648, Heinrich Schütz’s “Geistliche Chor-Music†is still regarded as one of his seminal works.A two-volume performance edition based on Werner Breig’s revised new text was published in 2012 and 2013 (BA 5901/BA 5902).Now selected motets are being issued in separate volumes. They offer a modern notation and layout, retain the original keys and include an integrated figured bass realisation. In keeping with contemporary performance practice, the ‘choral’ parts can be performed by instruments as well as voices. Instrumental parts with underlaid words may be purchased separately for performances with instruments (see performance material for BA 5901 and BA 5902).

This scholarly-critical volume is the first published edition of Meyerbeer's Clarinet Quintet, which vanished in World War ll and only recently resurfaced in the estate of the clarinetist Carl Bärmann. Meyerbeer wrote the piece in Vienna in 1813 for his friend Heinrich Bärmann, a celebrated clarinettist to whom C. M. von Weber also dedicated several works. The extremely novel and virtuoso handling of the clarinet was unusual for its day: Meyerbeer allows it to stand out clearly from the string ensemble and pushes it to the utmost limits of its technique. The Work enriched the meager chamber music repertoire for the clarinet in the 19th century. Our scholarly-critical edition makes this masterpiece available to performers for the first time in print. Besides the musical text, it offers a critical report and a detailed preface discussing the work's genesis. The parts have been given performance markings by Dieter Klöcker.

Alexander Zemlinsky's music was long unjustly overshadowed by what was regarded as the “more progressive†Second Viennese School. Although Zemlinsky was close friends with its protagonist Arnold Schönberg, he never did take the latter's radical step into dodecaphony. At the same time, he composed works that were no less original or fully fledged. Composed between 1913 and 1915, his Second String Quartet in particular pushed the contemporaneous understanding of form and tonality to its limits. With just one movement but spanning over 1,200 measures, this multi-faceted work numbers among the most significant contributions to the genre of the time and has long merited a critical new edition. The Urtext edition by G. Henle Publishers corrects many errors and inaccuracies in the first edition that came to light after careful comparison with the autograph sources in Vienna and Washington. For the first time, too, the metronome markings that survive only in one of Zemlinsky's letters have been incorporated. Editorial work was kindly supported by the Alexander Zemlinsky Endowment Fund in Vienna.

The New Robert Schumann Edition (RSA) is intended as a historico-critical edition of the collected works. They will be carefully studied and prepared according to present-day musicological and editorial techniques and presented in their entirety. Drafts, sketches and fragments, in short, everything that has come down to us as being authentically by Schumann and which, in most cases, has been deliberately preserved by him, will be brought together, evaluated as to its importance and documented in some form or other in the edition of the complete works. It is the aim of the edition to reproduce authentic texts which - having corrected scribal, copying and printing errors and eradicated later additions and other textual corruptions - will approach as closely as is possible the intention of the originals. The critical edition will form the basis of accurate performance material for Robert Schumann's work.
