The heat of the day ebbs away as the sun slowly dips from view over the western horizon. A dazzling display of warm hues, vibrant yellows, glowing oranges and burning reds, lights up the evening before cooling to calm blues, dark, cool purples andfinally the black of night. Such are the unforgettable sunsets that inspired Jan de Haan to write this piece.

The piece traces key events in the life of Haakon the Good, later to become King Haakon I (ca. 921-960), who had been fostered by King Athelstan of England as part of a peace agreement made by his father (“The Future King”). The English king brought him up in the Christian religion and, on the news of his father's death, provided him with ships and men for an expedition against his half-brother Eirik Bloodaxe, who had been proclaimed king of Norway. On his arrival he travelled north (“The Journey to Trondheim”), where he began to gain the support of the landowners by promising to give up the rights of taxation his father had previously claimed. Elrik's sons allied themselves with the Danes, but were invariably defeated by Haakon, who was successful in everything he undertook except in his attempt to introduce Christianity to the country (“The Missionary King”), which aroused an opposition he did not feel strong enough to face. One of his most famous victories was “The Battle of Rastarkalv” (near Frei) in 955. By placing ten standards far apart along a low ridge (to give the impression his army was bigger than it actually was), he managed to fool Eirik's sons that they were outnumbered (the ten standards are represented by ten loud chords that begin in m. 420). The Danes fled and were slaughtered by Haakon's army.

The surviving second and third acts of Catone in Utica, one of Metastasio's most dramatic libretti, premiered in Verona in the spring of 1737 in a setting by Vivaldi, contains some of his finest, most mature, and most original arias, and are published here for the first time. They evince a potential dramatic intensity that makes us regret all the more the loss of the first act. Only one aria of Act I can be definitely recovered from a surviving opera, but the rest has now also been successfully reconstructed by Alessandro Ciccolini, whose intimate knowledge of Vivaldi's working methods, combined with brilliant stylistic insight won universal acclaim for his work on Vivaldi's Montezuma and Ercole sul Termodoonte.

'This piece for solo harpsichord (1995, duration 10 minutes) was commissioned by Maggie Cole. '... I have offered many options with ornamentation, suggesting some, writing out others completely, but also encouraging the player to use their invention and instincts to add others where not specified and generally to adopt an open approach to the piece.'.

This exiting 6/8 piece conveys the daring adventures of voyages during the Viking Age, sailing aboard Norse longships in the Baltic Sea. This heavy, accented melody uses frequent doubling between sections for a full hearty sound that rings out like the songs of the sailors and Vikings as they navigated the high seas. The bowings and articulations throughout this piece create energy and drama, with Violin I, Bass, and Cello venturing briefly out of first position. Like the push and pull of the rowers’ oars, players will feel the rhythmic pull of 3 against 2 in places, driving the piece forward with momentous energy, exploring new worlds of music!

Llio was composed during Berlioz's stay in Italy in 1831. In April of that year he set out from Rome, where he held a scholarship as winner of the Prix de Rome, and travelled as far as Nice on hearing that his fiancee Camille Moke had rejected him in favour of another suitor. He had intended to return to Paris to exact revenge, but then he abandoned his plan and instead spent three weeks in Nice, returning in stages to Rome. On this return journey he conceived the idea of a semi-theatrical work that combined music and monologues to express the idea of returning to life after a profound traumatic experience. The composition was finished in Rome in Iune 1831. In the spring of 1832, while staying with his parents in Dauphin, Berlioz copied the orchestral and vocal parts, and the work was first performed in conjunction with the Symphonie fantastique at the Paris Conservatoire on 9 December 1832. It was heard again three weeks later and again on 3 May 1835. While designated as the second part of the Episode in the Life of an Artist, Lelio can never- theless be performed on its own, without the Symphonie fantastique to precede it.

All songs and lieder composed in the years 1910-1937 by the composer Erwin Schulhoff from Prague, who was persecuted by the National Socialists, are now published in three volumes for the first time, documenting his very different creative phases and stages of life: Whereas Vol. I and II stand for the emancipation from being a successor to Wagner and Debussy, Vol. III contains not only the well-known atonal Funf Gesange from 1919 but also fresh jazzy popular songs and political songs for the masses written after 1933 when he turned to communism.

The word "hymn" comes from the Greek "hymnos", meaning a festive song. To hymnologists (people who study hymns), the HYMN is the poetry, the lyrics, which is then set to a HYMN TUNE. Many wonderful hymn tunes have been used over the centuries with several completely different sets of words. The name of a hymn tune seldom matches the name of its hymn, and most people refer to hymns by their poetic names rather than their tune names. However, some hymn tunes are so powerful, so flexible and so rooted in the collective social consciousness that they transcend whatever poetry is put with them. Several tunes in this set have been used for many poems, most of which are unfamilar. But we know the melody instantly! Written for two violins and piano, both a viola and cello part are include to substitue for the 2nd violin. Hymns (tunes) include: 1. All Glory, Laud and Honor (St. Theodulph), 2. Crown Him With Many Crowns (Diademata), 3. Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken (Austria), 4. I Love to Tell the Story (Hankey), 5. Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise (St. Denio), 6. O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing (Axnon), 7. O Worship the King (Lyons), 8. Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty (Lobe Den Herren).

Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) composed this madrigal in 1605. It appears in the fifth of his eight books of madrigals and is one of his most famous. Cruda Amarilli are the first words in a soliloquy from the play Il pastor fido, which was published in Venice in 1589 by the dramatic poet Battista Guarini (1538-1612). The soliloquy translates as follows: Cruel Amaryllis, who with your name to love, alas, bitterly you teach. Amaryllis, more than the white privetpure, and more beautiful, but deafer than the deaf asp, and fiercer and more elusive. Since telling offended you, I shall die in silence. Barry Toombs' elegant brass quintet arrangement of Monteverdi's madrigal setting of Cruda Amarilli successfully imitates the fluid quality of the human voice.

In Carl Flesch's opinion, the studies [by Sevcik] are the most important and time-saving material by which a modern violin technique can be achieved, but always provided that they are correctly applied. He compared them to medicine which, according to the amount taken can either kill or cure. To prevent a lethal dose and to update the study material, editor Klaus Hertel, on the one hand, reduced the vast number of variants to what he considers necessary while, on the other hand, he has extended it by means of new exercises penned by himself. The edition shows the significance of Sevcik's educational undertakings also for our own day; through a purposeful selection, however, it aims to concentrate on the essentials.

There were wild oatsAnd the soil was blackBut sparkledWhen the sun was outThe air sharp in the nostrilsHard to defineSomewhere between knife and coal andAcid and that special light and sweetWhiteness thornbushes exhaleIt was nothing specialBecause everything was special...Thus the opening line of the poem TERRAINS VAGUES by Klaus Rifbjerg, the Danish Poet. I chose to adopt this title for my orchestral work, because of its closeness in associations: an indeterminable, often polarized, state of rhythmic and tonal ambiguity. The expression seems created by the Franch author, Victor Hugo:And here lies the fascination: in the kinds of terrains vagues, which are simultaniously bizarre and ugly, as if created by two alien species of nature. To watch the suburb is like observing and amphibium: trees vanish, roofs appear, grass vanish, cobble stones appear, ploughing fields vanish, shops appear, beaten tracks vanish - passions appear; the murmur of Nature Divine ends, the noise of Mankind takes over. (Victor Hugo)Still, the atmosphere as well as the material of TERRAINS VAGUES have its origin, in my SYMPHONY NO. 6 (1999), the last minute of which, cut up rough, appears as the start of my new work. The music of TERRAINS VAGUES subdivides itself, without breaks, into three sections, or shades:I: TERRAINS - II: VAGUES (Waves) III: TERRAINS VAGUES.Per Norgard, March 2001.
