Robert Saxton's Hortus Musicae Book 1 was commissioned by Ian Richie for the 2013 City of London Festival with funds provided by the John S. Cohen Foundation. The first performance was given by Clare Hammond on June 24th 2013 at the church of St Mary Le Bow. The title less 'literal' in Latin than in the vernacular refers to the idea of an allegorical/metaphysical garden (reference to a 'real' or existing garden might be implied by Hortus Musicus) with various facets. The titles of the individual pieces/movements with their respective garden image are as follows: 1) Hortus Somniorum: afleeting vision of a 'magical' garden 2) Hortus Temporis: a reflection of/on the floral clock described by Andrew Marvell (1621-1678) in his [metaphysical] poem The Garden: How well the skilful gardener drewOf flowers and herbs this dial newWhere from above the milder sunDoes through a fragrant zodiac run;And as it works the industrious beeComputes its time as well as we.How could such sweet and wholesome hoursBe reckoned but with herbs and flowers! 3) Hortus Cantus: A garden in which nature 'sings' (praises) in the manner of a 'chorale prelude' and ending with the cantus firmus transformed into bells. 4) Hortus Infinitatis: A meditative/formal garden representing Time suspended in the form of a palindromic prolation canon combined with a harmonic ground (chaconne). 5) Saltatio Hortensis: A (summer) garden of dancing celebratory nature. Its essence (and that of the entire cycle both metaphorically and structurally/formally) is summed up in words spoken by Miranda in WH Auden's 1944 Tempest [Shakespeare]-inspired poem The Sea And The Mirror;So to remember our changing garden weAre linked as children in a circle dancing. Klezmer is the centuries-old, celebratory music of the Eastern European Jews. Long associated with old-world style weddings and the dancing that follows, this music has experienced a major revival as part of a global fascination with world music. A Klezmer Wedding is a set of four dances, newly-composed but based on traditional models.The Doina is an expressive chant for three successive soloists - it twists and turns with the wailing lament of a shepherd´s pipe. Next follows the Hora, a slow Rumanian dance in three with a mood that reflects the wedding´s solemn vows. A Chusidl, with a moderate speed and bouncy rhythms, gets the party to the dance floor. Jeremy Dale Roberts' Spoken To A Bronze Head (2009) for Mezzo Soprano and Piano. This is a setting for text by Ursula Vaughan Williams. 'In all the long years that I knew her andit was a matter of regret between us I never set a word of Ursula’s poetry. It was only after her death when I was asked to contribute a setting of one of her poems to a celebratory concert held at the Royal College of Musicthat I ‘jumped’: I knew immediately which one I wanted to do lines ‘Spoken to a Bronze Head’. This was the portrait bust of RVW made by David McFall: not the Jacob Epstein which neither of them liked very much. It stood alwaysin her sitting room a benign presence a ‘virtual’ companion in her long widowhood. My setting is in an ‘arioso’ style quite simple and austere maybe to match the rather ‘Augustan’ style of the verse. It is of course amemorial also a salute: and I wanted to enshrine in it the two of them Ralph and Ursula. So at the heart of it is a clangourous bronze-like chord lifted from the last movement of VW’s 6th Symphony from which I quote a passagejust before the conclusion. - Jeremy Dale Roberts

Pied Beauty-This setting of Gerard Manley Hopkins’s poem Pied Beauty was commissioned by the Rev Jim Bates Vicar of Kingston for the service in Kingston Parish Church celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The first performance was given by the combined choirs of the Kingston Parish Church and Twickenham Choral Society on the 2nd June 2002. A good proportion of the text is reflective or descriptive – it winds through a number of examples of dappled things with suitably celebratory music: ‘skies of couple-colour’ ‘rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim’ ‘fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls’ and so on winding down toa centrally peaceful section in which Hopkins writes of ‘all things counter original spare strange’ before returning to the celebratory mood. This grand anthem would be suitable for intermediate to advanced choirs to perform particularly at festival services and important church occasions.

'Le Voyage Dans La Lune is a continuous orchestral score of approximately 14 minutes comprising two outer fast sections and a slower inner section of a dream-like character. The work is directly inspired by the film Le Voyage Dans La Lune (1902) written and directed by the pioneering French film-maker Georges Méliès. Méliès was influenced by 19th century interests in science and discoveries as well as the science fiction of Jules Verne. At the same time his work seems fantastic surreal and satirical. Some critics point out an underlying critique of colonial adventuring. The plot centres on a group of astronomers who decide tolaunch a rocket to the moon containing a handful of their number. They reach the moon (famously landing on the moon?s face) and then encounter a strange race of aliens whom they battle and destroy. The return to earth involves a dramatic descent a plunge into the ocean and then celebratory dancing. The film inhabits a surreal and dream-like space and uses an idiosyncratic visual language which transforms reality. This inspired an active musical response in my own score which is by turns abrupt smooth lyrical and violent and expresses something of the strange shifting surfaces and multiple and layered tempos evident in the film. The canons in the horns in the first scene reflect the intense arguments of the astronomers as they consider the project. The slower inner section is inspired by the scenes of the industrial City viewed from its rooftops by the astronomers. It also expresses the wonder of the astronomers as they see the earth rise from the perspective of the moon after their arrival there. The music of the final section is in places conflicted reflecting the violent encounters with the moon?s inhabitants. It moves into a more harmonious phase at the close to match the celebrations upon the astronomers? return from their adventuring. The music could be considered to be a surreal mini-opera

Cast in a singlemovement in three sections the title is inspired by the state motto “Montani semper liberi” (“Mountaineeers forever free”). The work is unified at the outset and closing by a ceremonial fanfare based onthematic figures from the state song West Virginia Hills.
