Piano Solo-Lullabies / Vuggeviser for Piano solo was composed by Bent Sørensen in 2000. Preface / Programme Note: Some melodies keep haunting me; they will stick in my mind and I will walk about humming them and they will find their way into my music. Two such melodies are the basis for the present piano piece which I call LULLABIES. The first little tune began its life as a ballad in an operatic draft ofmine. Later on – with text by English poet Selima Hill – it became part of my songcycle ROSES ARE FALLING for mezzo soprano and piano. In the latter context it is a love song but I have always had a lullaby-feelingabout this tune and indeed as a lullaby it appears in my opera UNDER THE SKY to text by Peter Asmussen; inthe opera the loved one sings and hums to her beloved and make him come to rest. During LULLABIES the tune will appear a half tone lower with each entry and make its way downwards through the musical texture from upper voice to bassline. The other little melody is a true lullaby which I hummed for my youngest daughter to try and make her go to sleep. Later on it became the backdrop for the last movement of my trombone concerto BIRDS AND BELLS. The two melodies in their original form are reproduced at the beginning of LULLABIES.Bent Sørensen 2000

Pour récitant et piano à quatre mains-During the visit to Brive-la-Gaillarde in 1940 Poulenc sketched a little piece for the children of his cousins: Sophie Sylvie Benoit Florence and Delphine Périer Yvan Alain Marie-Christine and Marguerite-MarieVillotte and their two friends Marthe Bosredon and André Lecoeur. This took the form of a musical background to Jean de Brunhoff's popular illustrated children's story about Babar a baby elephant whose mother is killed by ahuntsman. Fortunately Babar meets a kind elderly lady who dresses him in a fine suit and gives him an impressive motor-car.However Babar feels homesick for his forests and is pleased when his cousins Arthur and Celeste find him and needs no persuasion to go home with them. Back in the forest where the King of the Elephants has eaten a poisonous mushroom Babar is elected to succeed as King. He marries Celeste and the last we hear of him isthinking of a rosy future as he dreamily looks up at a marvellously star-filled sky.Poulenc's score to which he returned and completed in 1945 is for a narrator and a Piano so written that the individualsections offer the pianist a number of self-contained descriptive pieces such as a Lullaby a Reverie a Galop a Nocturne and so on. Indeed some of Poulenc's finest Piano music isfound in these charming pages.In 1962 Jean Françaix made an orchestral version and Barbar has been enjoyed by children of all ages all over the world. John Tavener's The Martydom Of Saint Stephen for Solo Horn Double SATB Choir and Organ. Commissioned by the Metropolitan and Cathedral Chapter of St. Stephen’s Cathedral Vienna. First performed on 16thMarch 2015 at St Stephen’s Cathedral Vienna by the Cathedral Choir conducted by Markus Landerer. Vienna's iconic gothic cathedral is dedicated to the first Christian martyr and the Metropolitan and Chapter chosewith discrimination and imagination when they asked John Tavener to write this work setting the account of the stoning of St Stephen from the Acts of the Apostles. The choral writing is far from difficult and rich double-choireffects from staggered entries singing the same music creates an impressive sense of the numinous. Tavener fans will not be surprised that the composer suggests that extra male voices might be required. The virtuoso horn part marked 'ferocious - wild and violent' is directed to be played from a gallery and suggests the hail of stones and hatred directed at the saint. The organ mostly offers brief interjections and chordal support until the last 18bars a lullaby(?) for the saint who 'fell asleep in the Lord' as he was being stoned. John himself went to his final sleep not long after composing this majestic work: Eternal memory! - Organists' Review
