Denmark Revisited - Danish choral works for mixed voices a cappella.Edited by Ja...(+)
Denmark Revisited - Danish choral works for mixed voices a cappella.Edited by Jakob Faurholt and Jesper Grove Jørgensen. Transl. by Edward Broadbridge and Mikael Gjesing. The present release contains a number of Danish choral works with Danish lyrics translated into English. For many years now there has been a broad international interest in performing Danish choral works not least from the 20th century but often the Danish lyrics have been a hindrance in realising this goal outside Denmark. With this in mind we have thought it important to make Danish choral music more available through the release of selected works in which the Danishtext is translated into English. With the present choice we have endeavoured to present works which fully demonstrate the wide range and originality of Danish choral music: the particular lyrical Danish tone of Svend S. Schultz and Jørgen Jersild; the original simplicity of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen; the characteristically Danish late romanticism of P.E. Lange-Müller and Rued Langgaard; and the music of composers with their own particular musical idiom such as Vagn Holmboe Bernhard Lewkovitch and Bo Holten. We have also tried to choose works with lyrics by writers that are specifically Danish in origin including Hans Christian Andersen Johannes V. Jensen and Tove Ditlevsen. Finally we have at all times been aware of the musical degree of difficulty so that the collection contains both easily approachable works as well as relatively complex ones. We hope that this release will help to spread knowledge and understanding of Danish choral music outside Denmark and thus offer the opportunity to expand the current choral repertoire that many choirs have wished.(Jesper Grove Jørgensen) ContentsP. A separate 'audio' CD also contains recordings of every piece. The book contains scores for each piece and extended notes by the composers to aid in the preparation of the music; there are 5 pieces for fixed ensembles and 8 pieces for flexible ensembles. The editor of the compilation Sadie Harrison comments: 'Playing in an ensemble with one's peers is perhaps the most rewarding and satisfying thing to do as a young performer and it is crucial to nurture this element ofGCSE courses to reflect this. On Track is a fantastic collection of many different styles approaches and sounds. There is something in here for everybody at whatever level and on whatever instrument. This is what GCSE Musicteachers are crying out for and finally here is something that really hits the mark.' Harrison's comments are echoed by recent examiners' reports from EdExcel one of the largest examiners of GCSE music. Theydescribe how the music they heard in examinations demonstrated 'an extreme range of standards and revealed evidence of the very wide range of instruments in use'. The AQA (Assessment and Qualification Alliance) Examiners' reportin 2004 warns schools against allowing their students to present solo music with a piano accompaniment played by a teacher or with a CD accompaniment for the ensemble performance component. It continues saying that 'it is of utmost importance that the chosen ensemble allows the candidate to show rapport with the other player(s). Heralds of Spring. Par RAFF JOSEPH JOACHIM. Joachim Raff?s 12 piano pieces Frühlingsboten op. 55, originating in 1852/53, mark a new creative start in his compositional oeuvre, in which the composer left behind his previously written and published piano works. The title of the work, translated as ?Heralds of Spring,? is multilayered: It refers not only to spring in nature as expressed in the headings of the first two pieces, ? Winterruhe [Hibernation]? and ? Frühlingsnahen [Spring?s Approach],? but the words ?Heralds of Spring? also indicate love?s spring, the blossoming of love for his future wife, the actress Doris Genast. This appears in the headings of the pieces as of no. 3, sketching the path of an imaginary couple approaching union via various annoyances. And ultimately, Raff saw in his new piano work the ?harbingers? of his future works, created under ?happy circumstances.? In Frühlingsboten Raff repeatedly demonstrates his ability to adapt idioms and compositional techniques from works by Liszt, Chopin, Mendelssohn, Schumann, and others. The pieces do nonetheless possess their own thoroughly original diction with a character spectrum just as diverse as their stylistic piano design. / Date parution : 2022-11-16/ Recueil / Piano

For Flute, Clarinet In Bb, and Piano. Par JALBERT PIERRE. Triple Set was commissioned by the Flute/Clarinet Duos Consortium, an organization of 17 groups which will give the premiere performances of the work. I’ve always been fascinated by the flute and clarinet, and when I was approached by my colleagues at Rice (Leone Buyse and Michael Webster) to write a piece for flute, clarinet and piano (I’m a pianist myself), for the Flute/Clarinet Duos Consortium, I was happy to oblige. Both of my sons also play the clarinet, so many of these sounds are around me all the time. The piece is in three contrasting movements. The first movement, Driving, marked “With great energy”, is rhythmically propelled forward by the piano’s muted strings and the flute and clarinet playing at first in rhythmic unison, then each taking a turn at solos while the other participates in the accompanimental syncopations. The second movement, Still, is marked “Timeless” and slowly unfolds its melodic and harmonic ideas. The third movement, Relentless, is a kind of 6/8 scherzo, which vigorously and relentlessly propels itself forward to the end, with just two minor interruptions of quasi-cadenza like passages for flute and clarinet duo. - Pierre Jalbert/ Répertoire / Flûte Traversière, Clarinette et Piano

This work is intended for performance on Good Friday during the 'Adoration of the Cross' ceremony of the Roman (Catholic) rite. The pitch of the sung parts is given by a member of the choir who after discreetly obtaining a tone with the aid of a tuning fork (or other such device) intones 'Popule meus' (and later 'Hagios') clearly on the notes indicated in each case. The recited 'Hagios' choruses should be performed as speech on diverse tones but in the natural speaking registers and in compliance with the rhythms and expression marks indicated. When reciting the word 'Sanctus' the consonant 'nc' should dominate. The two speech choruses develop into a 'Miserere nobis' sungon chance (random) tones with fixed time values (durations) the second time however culminating in completely free improvisation. At this point each singer sings 'Miserere nobis' independently of the others. The sentence may be repeated (ad lib.) with new variations until at a sign from the leader each initiated phrase is terminated in a diminuendo. These improvised sections should allow for considerable freedom of expression. They should be a result of spontaneous inspiration but should at all times be characterised by sacral dignity and should conform to the character of the work as a whole. All sections to be performed quasi attacca - keep the intensity. The reproaches are to be recited by a male chorister in his normal speaking register but quasi cantabile. It is left at the discretion of the performers to decide how many of the recited verses in the last section of the work are to be performed. When 'Popule' is sung for the last time the word 'mihi' should be uttered as a sigh.Bernhard Lewkovitch

Method and Solos for Jump Blues Guitar 2-DVD Set-Cult figure rock & roll legend and music writer Cub Koda defined jump blues as 'an up-tempo jazz-tinged style of blues that first came to prominence in the mid- to late '40s. Usually featuring a vocalist in front of a large horn-driven orchestra or medium sized combo with multiple horns the style is earmarked by a driving rhythm intensely shouted vocals and honking tenor saxophone solos - all of those very elements a precursor to rock & roll. The lyrics are almost always celebratory in nature full of braggadocio and swagger.'Dutch recording artist and top European Guitar educator Matthieu Brandt spent a decade interviewing and studying with many of the originatorsof Jump Blues to document the style and create this essential Jump Blues course for Guitar. This 2-DVD set is presented as a methodology covering theory comping accompanist riffs horn lines arranged for Guitar and several approaches for soloing drilling down on many approaches for opening up the neck for the scales arps and riffs that are employed in swing and Jump Blues Guitar. It also ices the cake with 12 tasty solos followed by in-depth analysis of several jump blues giants such as Brian Setzer T-Bone Walker Charlie Christian Gatemouth Brown and Freddie King all of whom have their own signature sound. Accompanying vocalists and soloists is a big part of the style and is as challenging and rewarding as soloing. A sizable chunk of these DVDs is dedicated to voicings pulling off various rhythms and locking up with the rhythm section.

It is a sceneof devastation and despair and also it seemed to me of latent anger and hostility... butabove it all a serene blue sky beckons. So perhaps even in the darkest moments there is aglimmer of hope - the possibility of change. This idea became the starting point for this work - Towards the Blue - a mini concerto forclarinet who eventually becomes the leader of the group. The work starts without the clarinet and all is desolate yet fiercely argumentative discordant and uncomfortable. Suddenly the offstage clarinet is heard and the players insurprise are quietened. However when the clarinet enters and approaches with a lyricalmusical motif some of the players respond others resist. These well-known words seem endlessly fruitful for the composer and conjure up such lovely images which strike each of us in our own way. For me it was the beauty of the language with its flower imagery which made me want to set the words with richly warm harmony and to temper that with gently imitative refrains. The important element in approaching the performance of this carol is the blend and balance of voices. With divisi writing and characteristically colourful harmonies, it is important that each note in the texture is given equal weight. It is also desirable that the tempo should be flexible and that phrase ends should be given a little time, especially at those moments marked either with a comma or tenuto. The final section starting with the upper voices should be ethereal and when the tenors and basses join they should do so gently to balance the upper parts. The bulk of the carol should be conducted in a minim beat, as indicated by the 2/2 time signature. Subdivisions should only be necessary at rallentandos. The piece should flow freely. 3/4 bars can be conducted in one to continue to encourage the carol's flow. Recommended recording: Come out, Lazar - The shorter choral works of Paul Spicer (Regent REGCD280) by The Chapel Choir of Selwyn College, Cambridge, directed by Sarah MacDonald. / Choeur Mixte (SATB) A Cappella

When Jeffrey Skidmore of Ex Cathedra approached me to write this piece he specified that it should be remembering the first World War and if at all possible the words should be by or about a woman.A friend steered me towards Vera Brittain's Testament of Youth and spookily the book fell open on page 163 where appeared Kathleen Coates' s poem 'A Year and a Day'. This was written between 1910 and 1913 but is I think prophetic of the impending war in its depiction of a woman and man in love reluctantly separated and missing each other. Around the same time my mother sent me the poem 'Since we parted yestereve' by Victorian statesman and poet Robert Bulwer-Lytton(1831-1891) — it seemed to fit beautifully as a refrain to 'A Year and a Day'.We start with the refrain in which I try to create a sense of yearning — with harmonies that lean into each other and suspensions that only partly resolve. I have given the ladies the first verse of 'A Year and a Day' — I have used mellow flat keys as this is marked 'languorously' as I picture a calm but pining Edwardian lady reclining in a warm English Summer's garden. When the men take over in the second verse this comes from a darker place — maybe a noisy fetid trench where dreams of love and happiness are sometimes hard to conjure. The music shifts in harmonic uncertainty — the harp oscillates and rumbles creating instability. This part is written in sharp keys which I think have a more stringent feel about them. The whole piece is made up of my typical major-minor harmonic language which sets a bittersweet atmosphere and the trumpets remind us from time to time of the backdrop of war. The piece ends meditatively with 'Eleven Armistice Chimes' and lasts approximately 10 minutes. It's dedicated to Jeffrey Skidmore and Ex Cathedra and my deepest thanks go to them for commissioning the work and Jane Arthur for sponsoring the commission.
