Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy as letter-writer: at the heart of 19th century European cultureAs one of the most important letter-writers of the 19th century, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy maintained an extensive correspondence. With great style and eloquence he wrote letters to friends and family, letters from his travels and he also wrote to leading composers, musicians, artists as well as publishers. He corresponded with famous contemporaries such as Robert Schumann, Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner as well as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Carl Friedrich Zelter and Alexander von Humboldt. The correspondence begins in 1816 and ends in 1847 with the composer’s death. My choice of the flute, viola, and harp combination for this composition was reached quickly and almost instinctively, motivated not only because I relished the thought of composing for an instrumental ensemble I had not previously written for, but also because something about its color palette reminded me of the image I have of Santa Fe as a sun-drenched city of warm hues, a thriving arts scene, and a spirit of relaxed tolerance.In All Roads Leading I treat the instruments intermittently as three distinct characters who have their own individual “voices†and musical materials, while at other times they coalesce into a single, more unified entity. In the sections expressive of the instruments’ individual “soulsâ€â€ as I like to call them—the music ranges from the songful, to the impassioned, but also the volatile. In contrast, where all three instruments act as a single entity, the music tends to be highly rhythmic, sometimes dance-like, even angular, and spiky.As the work progresses, the boundaries between these contrasting approaches become deliberately blurrier and more intertwined, perhaps reminding one of a tale with various twists and turns in the plot. And although eschewing a formal recapitulation, various motivic threads as well as emotive “states†are eventually brought full circle, as if to fulfill an intended role that crystallizes only as All Roads Leading plays out its full journey. Simultaneously with the general unwinding and relaxation that is reached nearthe end, a mutation of an earlier more threatening element appears at the very closing of the work, perhaps a reminder that the unknown always lies ahead.

Cesar Franck wrote his Symphony in D minor in 1887/88; in spite of the work's lukewarm reception at its world premiere on 17 February 1889, the work was published during his lifetime. It was not until a few years later that the established conductors dared perform this work more frequently . It marked the inevitable triumph of a work which had once caused such a furor and whose individuality of conception burst the framework of the genre (double tonality of D and F minor in the opening movement; the combination of Andante and Scherzo in the central one; the recapitulation of the main themes and motifs of the previous movements in the finale). The work was finally accepted into the concert repertoire for good around the turn of the century, not least through the good offices of influential critics and composers.Just as with the previously published Carnival of the Animals (PB/OB 5321) by Saint-Saens, Franck's work also raises many questions concerning its origin and history. The previously unpublished Two Pieces was released to mark the 2013 centenary of the Benjamin Britten's birth, who founded the publisher Faber Music. These trios were written in late 1929, after Britten composed the Rhapsody for String Quartet (March 1929). This edition was edited by David Matthews, who spent three years as an assistant to Benjamin Britten at Aldeburgh in the late 1960s.

Reinmar Emans' new Urtext edition thus contains much more than just the previously known music text. Valuable aid was provided here by a number of contemporary copies which yielded further important details.

The Italian hymns contained in this collection were composed during the years 1966-1968. They are based on texts of the so-called post-conciliar liturgy resulting from a reform dictated by the previously concluded Second Vatican Ecumenical Council. Due to this reform, national languages would now be permitted in several parts of the liturgy. Rota incorporated the last piece of this collection into the film score for Franco Zeffirelli's La bisbetica domata (The Taming of the Shrew).

Wernick's tenth String Quartet was written for the Emerson String Quartet, with whom he had previously collaborated (his String Quartet No. 4 is also dedicated to the ensemble). The Emerson premiered the work in Berlin in March, during a European tour of three countries. A performance was also scheduled for their appearance at Tanglewood, July 23. String Quartet No. 10 is crafted in three movements: Prelude, Fuga Pomposa & Postlude (Maestoso); Scherzo Serioso (with a secular song of thanks); and CODA (Lamentoso).
