This organ reduction is intended to use instead of the original orchestral accompaniment- it is compatible with new edition of Requiem da Camera by Christian Alexander (BH 12681). The organ reduction was done by Francis Jackson, doyen of English cathedral organists and titulaire at York Minster for 36 years.Jackson sympathetically recreates the chamber orchestra scoring for a three-manual organ. Ingeniously, the manual couplings (II to III, II and III to I) are unaltered throughout, with pedal coupled to manuals as appropriate. Detailed registrations are not indicated as these are best left to the performer, taking into account the unique circumstances of the particular instrument, size of choir and acoustic setting at each individual performance.The user-friendly landscape score includes at least one principal vocal line cued throughout, and a cappella choral passages are reproduced in full.Requiem da Camera was Finzi's first extended work- only the instrumental prelude was performed during his lifetime. The other three movements are settings of poems by John Masefield, Thomas Hardy and Wilfrid Wilson Gibson. Scored for baritone solo, small chorus (or SATB soli) and chamber orchestra, the wellspring of the Requiem's composition was the death, during active service in 1918, of Finzi's composition teacher, Ernest Farrar. The work may also be viewed as a metaphor - the permanence of the land, and a centuries-old pattern of rural life following the rhythm of the turning seasons, contrasted with the violent havoc and destructive dislocation wrought by war. G minor BWV 1058-In early 1729 Bach became director of the so-called »Scottish Collegium Musician« a music organization of students and local citizens. The remarkable results of this undertaking are the concertos for harpsichord. Today it is almost certain that practically all of these concertos were transcribed from concertos for melody instruments (mostly violin or oboe).The Concerto for Harpsichord and Strings in G minor BWV 1058 is the last complete work in the original autograph score of harpsichord concertos that Bach wrote out in or around 1738 (Berlin Staatsbibliothek Mus. Ms. Bach 234). However it only came to occupy this position later when the manuscript wasbound. It stands at the very outset of the genesis of this group of works and marks the earliest stage in Bach’s efforts to transform concertos for melody instrument and strings into harpsichord concertos. With Guitar Accompaniment-Duet arrangements of three well-known Vivaldi Concertos arranged for mandolin and guitar: Concerto in A (RV82) Concerto in C (RV425) and Concerto in D (RV93). Each arrangement in this collection has been reduced from soloistwith string orchestra to a duet for mandolin and guitar. The mandolin performs the solo part and the guitar part is a reduction of the strings. In the guitar part chords have been added above the staff to allow forembellishment-a common practice of the Baroque era. The unprecedented commercial success of the CD of Henryk Miko aj Góreckis Third Symphony in 1991 fifteen years after the date of its composition not only drew the Polish composer to the worlds attention arousing interest in his earlier works but also gave rise to a discussion about the state of culture in what might be described as a decadent period. So was the Third Symphony ahead of its time? Was it justifiable to regard the work as an end-of-the-seventies piece of aesthetical provocation? Should the wilful confusion of high and low aesthetic orders be considered a symbol of the end of post-Enlightenment utopia when the idea of progress in all fields including art constituted the fundamental criterion for evaluation? Attempts to answer these questions have given rise to a certain intellectual confusion leading occasionally to the advancing of false theses such as the attribution of Góreckis compositional output to the New Age spiritual landscape or the comparison of his compositional procedures with those of American minimalist composers. In fact the Third Symphony Symphony of Sorrowful Songs reflects both the composers individual exploration of technique and his attempt to determine his own Christian spiritual identity. The composition is a new manifestation of the sonoristic reductionism technique and the idea of simple music in line with Krzysztof Drobas designation of these phenomena according to which all details and modifications of tone colour are significant. By conferring on the three movements of the composition a form of mystery which negated a rational sense of time and made the work dissolve in a seemingly infinite continuum the composer managed to bring the Symphony within the sphere of folk ceremonial tradition. Anguish the principal theme of the composition presented here through both the mothers suffering after her sons death and the image of a woman prisoner in a Gestapo prison makes real sense only in the light of faith and the drama of Golgotha. Góreckis Third Symphony Symphony of Sorrowful Songs for soprano solo and orchestra dedicated to the composers wife was written in 1976. Commissioned by Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden it was premiered on 4 April 1977 during the 14th International Festival of Contemporary Art in Royan with Stefania Woytowicz as soloist. The same singer has made several recordings of the composition with different orchestras. The CD with Dawn Upshaw as soloist and the London Sinfonietta conducted by David Zinman won a Golden Disc award in 1991. The first movements outer sections (Lento sostenuto tranquillo ma cantabile) consist of an austere ten-part canon on strings. Its Aeolian theme was derived from a Kurpian song notated in Rev. Father W adys aw Skierkowskis collection. The canon is characterized by continual repetition of the theme (and its counterpoint) all its answers being tonal and thus not going beyond the notes of the scale. Par BOCCHERINI LUIGI. Luigi Boccherini was born in Lucca in Italy, where he became famous at an early age as a virtuoso Cellist. After an invitation to Madrid in 1768, he spent the rest of his life in Spain. It is not surprising then, that his compositions were much influenced by the rhythmic variety and rich colours of Spanish music and this influence is nowhere more pronounced than in the exuberant Grave e Fandango (Introduction And Fandango). The piece was originally written as a piece for String Quartet, and then subsequently arranged for Guitar and String Quartet. What was so surprising, however, was that such a reduction did not lead to a meaningless sequence of fragments, but that the fragments turned out to be – with regard to harmony and motifs – so closely related to each other that the result proved an impressive ‘work within a work’. The reduction uncovered something that could be called the ‘essence’ of the work. I have a great fondness for the lower string instruments: I am a bass player, my mother is a cellist, as are both my daughters; my own ensemble includes two violas, a cello and a bass, and for the instrumentation of my opera Medea I omit the entire violin section from the orchestra. As I have written a number of works for solo instrument or voice with orchestra I welcomed the opportunity to write a concerto for cello and orchestra and especially one which focuses particularly on the instrument’s lyrical qualities. Although the piece is in one continuous movement, and the soloist is playing almost without a break, it nevertheless falls into distinct sections which are recognisable by a shift of tempo as well as by a change in the music’s character. One of the early ideas Julian Lloyd Webber and I discussed was that it might form a companion piece to one of the Haydn concertos. Given my friendship with some members of the English Chamber Orchestra and my awareness of their repertoire, this suggested a number of particular musical references. The subtitle to the work, for example, combines the subtitles of two idiosyncratic Haydn symphonies and I allude to them in different ways but chiefly through orchestration: for The Philosopher by including a section in the concerto where the orchestration resembles that of the symphony’s first movement (pairs of English and French horns, muted violins and unmuted lower strings); for The Farewell, by the progressive reduction in the orchestration towards the end. Indeed, apart from the orchestral tutti in the last few bars, the last pages of the score are virtually for string quartet. The subtitle also refers to my own background as a philosophy graduate... The piece was commissioned by Philips Classics for Julian Lloyd Webber and is dedicated to him. Bach P 234). The initials at the end of the piece SDGl ('Soli Deo Gloria') form a pendant to the J.J. ('Jesus Juva') found at theopening of the D-minor Concerto BWV 1052. This indicates that BVW 1057 formed the final piece in this six-work opus the only authentic and self-contained collection of concertos we have from Bach apart from his presentation copy of the Brandenburg Concertos (1721).
