If Nielsen's chamber and orchestral music epitomizes the exploratory growth-orientated side of his nature his songs contain the essence of his search for the ‘simple original’. Vocal Score-Nico Muhly's Sentences for Countertenor and Chamber Orchestra. Composed: 2014 Duration: 30 minutes Composers Note: Sentences is a thirty-minute meditation in collaboration with Adam Gopnik on several episodes drawn from the life and work of Alan Turing. Turing lived in a sense many different lives but at the heart of his work was I think a very musical set of anxieties. Even the idea of code-breaking is inherently musical; the French for score-reading is déchiffrage: deciphering. His wartime work on the Enigma code translated later in life to a more nuanced relationship to code in the form ofa primitive but emotionally (and philosophically) complicated artificial intelligence. The piece uses a single voice not to speak necessarily as Turing but as a guide through these various episodes. I’ve always felt that the question of sentient computers is wildly emotional: we anthropomorphise the Mars Rover imagining its solitude on that dusty planet. Any act of communication in which the second person is unseen can be a one-way conversation. An email sent can never be returned — did it arrive or did it not? — or a text message can be delivered but never read. The thrill of a fast response is immediately tempered with the harsh but empty rudeness of an out-of-office reply. Anybody who has made a condolence phone call only to hear the voice of the deceased on the outgoing answering machine message knows the complexities of what could be a simple binary communication.

Lully Lullay was written at the request of Philip Reed music director of the Bury St Edmunds Bach Choir which gave the first performance on 17 December 2011 at Holy Trinity Church Long Melford Suffolk. Inspired by the familiar medieval text of the Coventry Carol it is sung a cappella and invokes the sense of a lullaby through its metre and lilting melody. The fragility and bittersweet tonality of the opening verse is reflected in the continuous interaction between the tonic and dominant keys and resolving dissonances. This develops into broader passages of increased range and dynamics during the second and third verses where the melody ispassed between the upper and lower voices clearly invoking the poignancy of the text. The last verse returns to the original theme with subtle harmonic changes and a reflective final cadence. An inspiring selection of new works from a range of contemporary composers the Novello New Choral Series offers pieces for all types of choirs including sacred and secular works from simple four-part settings to more expansive yet accessible repertoire in an exciting variety of styles.Harriet Wybor was born in Leeds in 1986 and read music as an undergraduate at Durham University followed by an M.A. in composition with Martyn Harry and António Pinho Vargas.Harriet’s main compositional interests are sacred and secular contemporary choral and chamber music and the relationship between music and time. Her work reflects a wide range of influences from renaissance choral music and medieval texts to 20th-century literature and art. Harriet has had works performed by the Northern Sinfonia (conducted by H K Gruber) Psappha the Allegri String Quartet St John’s College Choir Durham the Bury St Edmunds Bach Choir and the Fishburn Band broadcast on BBC Radio 2’s Listen to the Band. After graduating from Durham University Harriet continued her studies at the University of Edinburgh where she read for

This beautiful folk melody will capture the hearts of students and audiences. Originally scored for large orchestra, this string arrangement captures the essential qualities often heard in the English style of chamber music for strings from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Holst's melody, with its simple pentatonic folksong theme, receives the kind of mystical transformation we often associate with British composers' treatments of their indigenous wellspring-the folksong. All sections share in the melodic themes while passages for a quartet of soloists add textural interest. (4:15) / Orchestre A Cordes

In memory of Christopher Rowland. Originally a concerto for Cello and chamber orchestra now for Cello with a Piano reduction of the orchestral part. The concerto is in four movements which are played without a break: Meditation Intermezzo Toccata-Scherzo and Song. The work lasts for some 18 minutes and was scored for two oboes two horns timpani (doubling tubular bells) and strings(found here in a Cello/Piano form). It is organised in one large arch-shaped structure with two fast inner movements flanked by two outer slow ones. The solo cello opens the work reflectively and introduces core melodic material which is continuously developed throughout theconcerto. Gradually the strings enter then wind and timpani and build a pyramid twelve-note chord at the peak of which there is a dramatic climax. The music then subsides (solo cello again) but links to the two faster middle movements. The second movement Intermezzo has an ABA structure and in its middle section quotes the opening of Shostakovich's Third String Quartet (written in the same year as Christopher Rowland was born!). Indeed the ghost of Shostakovich looms large throughout the concerto in more ways than one. The Toccata-Scherzo is energetic and rhythmically-charged again using an ABA structure. Here the writing for solo cello is quite virtuosic but not I hope in a shallow sense. The music builds inexorably towards a powerful climax underpinned by the opening twelve-note chord's re-appearance together with a violent outburst from the timpani at which point a tonal resolution (on G) arrives through a pianissimo held chord on strings which leads directly to the final movement - Song. And so the music arrives at its emotional heart through a simple melody (present in other forms throughout the work) announced by solo cello at the very top of its register against a quiet backdrop of horns and strings. A solo oboe enters with cello in canonic reply and all the time the music builds in texture and

| Violin Concerto Orchestre, Violon Schott
My Violin Concerto is scored for a Classical-sized orchestra, with the addition ...(+)
My Violin Concerto is scored for a Classical-sized orchestra, with the addition of a harp and celeste, and lasts around 17 minutes. Although the work sets out to explore the lyrical characteristics of the solo instrument, it is only gradually that the violin finds its full, lyric voice, and thence, as the work progresses, a more dominant role. This, in one sense, is the 'journey' of the piece. The work's straightforward formal scheme consists of three movements (roughly fast-slow-fast) framed by a reflective introduction and epilogue. However, these formal divisions exist within a single, unbroken arc. Such an overall symmetrical shape places the slow Arioso (itself divided into three subsections) at the midpoint, sandwiched between the two Allegro movements. The dramaturgy of the piece centres on a twofold search. First there is the ongoing pursuit to 'recapture' the simple melodic material stated by the solo violin - accompanied by the harp's bass register - during the opening bars. Whilst aspects of this melody are invoked frequently throughout (especially in the violin cadenza which closes the Arioso movement), it is only with the final and most important climax of the work that the melody appears again in its complete form, now accompanied by violent, orchestral stabs. The second search is for a tonal resting place, the arrival of which is delayed until the close of the epilogue. The original version of the Violin Concerto, commissioned by the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, was premiered in Amsterdam in February 2012 with Gordan Nikolic as soloist. The present, revised version was created for Barnabás Kelemen and the Hallé. The piece is dedicated, with admiration, to my friend Oliver Knussen. (Ryan Wigglesworth) / Violon Et Orchestre

The Beginner Guitarist has been born out of 20 years of teaching experience. Although specifically designed as a teacher’s aid it can also be used for independent study.Topics like posture tuning andphrasing are not prescribed being left to the judgement of the teacher. With the exception of right and left-hand fingering advice this approach is used throughout the series. The entire series has the goal of being a measuredand progressive tutor. Ideas are usually introduced one at a time to avoid overloading the student.Book Two aims to build on solid right and left-hand techniques and covers further progress in notationrecognition. It begins with the introduction of quavers (eighth notes) and further focus on the free stroke (tirando). This is balanced with the need to keep the rest stroke (apoyando) solid by giving the pupil a chance to playboth melody and accompanying parts.Extensive exercises for finger 4 via chords and melody are included but the main aim is to complete the learning of the notes in first position taking in several scales and modes alongthe way. Simple open chords are also given further attention and the book concludes with coverage of chromaticism relating to the bottom three strings.A daily practice session for the completion of book two extrarepertoire and other helpful information are all available at www.thebeginnerguitarist.com.About the author: Nigel Tuffs is an instrumental teacher with more than 20 years of experience in all areas ofguitar teaching. This concerto a new addition to the literature for guitar and orchestra casts the guitar almost as a member of the percussion family from the very beginning explosive in its energy easing into song for its secondtheme. An extensive cadenza takes the soloist to the highest note before plunging into an appropriately hectic ending. A simple (but all the more telling) guitar solo opens and closes the middle movement a nocturne withanother extended cadenza. The movement starts in meditation grows into a broad chorale-like melody and moves into rage before the orchestra intervenes to return to the calm of the beginning. The boisterous and carefree flavourof the last movement sketched while on holiday in Antigua during Carnival gives the concerto its nickname. This riotous and exuberant finale generates an irresistible rumba bringing together themes first heard at thevery beginning of the work particularly the rasqueado strumming and the tamburo percussive effects. The moods and flavour of the Caribbean are very acutely captured not in a tourist photograph but in an obviously loving spiritual portrait.????????????Eduardo?Fern?ndezThe Guitar Concerto ?Caribbean? has been recorded by Eduardo Fern?ndez withthe English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Barry Wordsworth.

Par PUSCOIU COSTEL. Great performers have proven that the viola can be successfully used for playing not only classic music, but also symphonic or chamber music from the classical, romantic or modern 36 period just as well as any other musical instrument. No longer is the contemporary repertoire considered unfit for the viola. This collection contains music which has been adapted and arranged especially for the viola. Ideal for the beginning player, it focuses on simple, well known melodies which are both easy and enjoyable. The arranger has carefully chosen the best keys for viola and therefore many songs are not in the keys in which they were originally written. A number of other adaptations have also been introduced to make the music more suitable for performance on the viola. The structure of the music has not been altered. The selections in the beginning of this book use more the treble clef than alto clef, making them easier for beginners and violinists transferring to viola.
