Frantisek Jan Skroup (b. 1801 1862) is known to the public first and foremost as the composer of the Czech national anthem. He was also music director of the Estates Theater in Prague during 1837 57 where he conducted major works from the international opera repertoire and composed a series of works. Taken from his small lesser known output of chamber music the Trio In E-Flat Major Op.27 (BA 9521) and the Trio facile in F major Op.28 (BA 9522) are being published for the first time in Urtext editions.The Trio In E-Flat Major is dedicated to the pianist and composer Sigismond Goldschmidt. It is stylistically reminiscent ofBeethoven?s chamber music; its unison opening recalls for example Beethoven?s famous ?Gassenhauer Trio?. Skroup dedicated the ?Trio facile? to Jeanette Hoffmann the daughter of the Prague publisher Johann Hoffmann.As the title suggests this is an accessible piece in the Biedermeier style which was intended for music making in the home and for lessons.Both these pleasing compositions which represent unknown repertoire of Czech chamber music from the period of the national revival movement can be performed in two different scorings. Par BRAHMS JOHANNES. Brahms’s Clarinet Trio, composed in 1891, was inspired by the exceptional musicality of clarinettist Richard Mühlfeld. As he did for his horn trio, Brahms prepared a viola part as a possible alternative to the clarinet. Both scorings were rehearsed (the viola part being played by Joseph Joachim) prior to the premiere and publication of the work. Bärenreiter’s scholarly-critical edition, prepared by Christopher Hogwood, offers a foreword on the trio’s compositional process with comments on performance practice, as well as a comprehensive critical commentary and facsimile excerpts of the manuscript. Music for Clarinet in Bb, Cello and Piano. Par JOST CHRISTIAN. In this trio, as in most of his compositions, Jost has pictures and associations with true incidents, films and novels in his mind. What inspired him to write this piece was Joseph Conrad's novel 'Heart of Darkness' in which the protagonist Marlow says about the city of Brussels: 'In a few hours I arrived in a city that always make me think of a whited sepulchre.' In 'Sepulchral City', a work commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, however, the title refers to Jerusalem, the city of white tombs. The topic of Jost's trio is a travel into the soul and living spirit of a city, with no physical movement being needed to find the heart of impenetrable darkness: It lies within the city walls. In this respect, 'Sepulchral City' equals a compositionally unfolded funeral bell. Even the animated middle section rather has insisting than progressive power.
