La tonalité solaire de la pièce – beaucoup plus gaie que les autres oeuvres de musique de chambre de Schubert – semble faire écho au bonheur de l’été 1819. Schubert composa cette pièce à 22 ans alors qu’il venait de passer l’été en compagnie agréable à Steyr, en Haute-Autriche. La présente édition Urtext se conforme pour l’essentiel à la premièreédition viennoise, vraisemblablement la version originale du manuscrit autographe aujourd’hui disparu. Elle prend également en compte l’unique source manuscrite de cette oeuvre, une copie réalisée par un ami de Schubert, Albert Stadler.
