Erkk i Melartin's six-movement Per speculum in enigmatae suite op. 93 for piano is published for the first time. The Latin title of the suite means Through a glass, darkly. Melartin probably compiled it from non-related pieces composed at different times. The biblical heading maybe has a spiritual rather than a religious connotation, though some of the movements - and the title - are programmatic. The first movement, Katedralen (The Cathedral), was possibly inspired by the architecture of Bruges (Brugge). The second movement, Die andere Seite (The Other Side) has expressionistic features, and possibly reflects the influence of Scriabin. In the third movement, Dunkle Traume (Dark Dreams), the chorale-like motifs in the left hand strive upwards, but always fall back again. Movement four, Schwester Namenlos (Sister Nameless is a short cameo in 5/4 time. Erinnerung is a Late-Romantic mood piece with unconventional phrasings. Melartin later expanded the early version of late 1913 with the closing Weihnachtsglocken (Christmas Bells).

Sara h Baker is Vocal Composer in Residence at Education Music Services, an ABRSM examiner and a well known composer of songs and musicals for primary schools and massed-choral events. All this experience has come together in the creation of this first published album of piano pieces, inspired by the sounds heard at night from the woodland just beyond Sarah’s childhood home.Suitable for players of around grade 4-5 standard, her evocative sound pieces begin at the tranquillity of dusk and end with the exuberant dawn chorus. The composer writes:'I grew up with woods behind my house, and the nocturnal noises and images that I remember were the inspiration for these eight short sound pictures on the theme of night. The music moves first from the tranquility of dusk and evening mists, to the emerging starlight of twilight. As night falls it takes on on a darker quality with shadows and dreams disturbing peace and calm. The night birds and bats swoop and flit past as they seek their prey, but gradually dawn approaches and peaceful sleep is restored. The morning is heralded in the joyful exuberance of the dawn chorus.'.

Sonatina s form a vital part of the teaching material for beginner and intermediate piano students. Compared to the great classical piano sonatas, they are technically and musically simpler and typically shorter. However, they still convey the basic elements of Classical style: the relation of melody to accompaniment, articulation, stylistically authentic playing, and correct interpretation. For the two volumes of Giraffe Piano, the most favoured and instructive of the sonatinas have been chosen. Volume 1 contains simpler pieces and Volume 2 is compromised of moderately difficult ones. Correct interpretation of the pieces is facilitated by added performance and fingeringmarks. Learning is helped along by clear presentation of the score, carefully placed page turns, and by inspiration from colour images showing the keyboard instruments of the 1720-1820 period for which the pieces were written. The most notable of them is the giraffe piano, after which the collection is named.

The idea of composing this series of piano pieces was conceived on the occasion of the 80th birthday of the famous Belgian painter and sculptor Octave Landuyt. ‘Secret Inspirations’ is an unfinished series of 7 piano pieces written between 2002 and 2004. Each piece tells its own story and is conceived as a short poem based on intimate moments of the composers' private life. Moments of emotion, astonishment, grief, happiness, passion and beauty. Moments you want to hold on to and cherish until they can be committed to white paper with groups of 5 regularly interspaced parallel lines... All the pieces of ‘Secret Inspirations’ are freely inspired and all have their own individual style. Only the subtitles provide a hint about the image the composer had in mind... .

“The Bird Catalogue by Olivier Messiaenis a set of 7 books with 13 pieces for Piano composed between 1956 and 1958. Each volume refers to a special bird and to the French region where the bird is typically from. The piece does not only describe the bird, it also depicts its surroundings, such as other birds, the landscape of its area, the colours and the temperature. Book 1 - Le Chocard des Alpes (Alpine Chough) - Le Loriot (Golden Oriole) IH Le Merle Bleu (Blue Rock Thrush) Book 2 - Le Traquet Stapazin (Black-Eared Wheatear) Book 3 - La Chouette Hulotte (Tawny Owl) - L'Alouette Lulu (Wood Lark) Book 4 - La Rousserolle Effarvatte (Reed Warbler) Book 5 - L'Alouette Calandrelle (Short-Toed Lark) - La Bouscarle (Cetti's Warbler) Book 6 - Le Merle de Roche (Rock Thrush) Book 7 - La Buse Variable (Buzzard) - Le Traquet Rieur (Black Wheatear) - Le Courlis Cendré (Curlew) As mentioned above, this 7th Volume focuses on the buzzard, the black wheatear and the curlew. The first one, the Buzzard represents ?La matheysine? in the Dauphiny area, the Black Wheatear, the area of Roussillion and the Curlew, the west coast of Brittany. The interpretation of these pieces requires a strong level of ability on Piano (upper advanced), due to some complex techniques required. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French organist and composer passionate about Ornithology and one of the most important composers of his century. Inspired by Japanese music, he had a very special way of composing and his work can be identified by its complexity, its diatonic aspect, its harmony with limited transposition, its colour and its additive rhythms. He composed many works related to ornithology and birdsong, including the 'Treatise on rhythm, colour and ornithology' in 7 volumes.â€.

The idea of composing 'Games' was suggested by children playing spontaneously, children for whom the piano still means a toy. They experiment with it, caress it, attack it and run their fingers over it. They pile up seemingly disconnected sounds, and if this happens to arouse their musical instinct they look consciously for some of the harmonies found by chance and keep repeating them. Thus this series does not provide a tutor, nor does it simply stand as a collection of pieces. It is a possibility for experimenting and not for learning to play the piano.Pleasure in playing, the joy of movement - daring and if need be fast movement over the entire keyboard right from the firstlessons instead of clumsy groping for keys and the counting of rhythms - all these rather vague ideas lay at the outset of the creation of this collection. Playing - is just playing. It requires a great deal of freedom and initiative from the performer. On no account should the written image be taken seriously but the written image must be taken extremely seriously as regards the musical process, the quality of sound and silence. We should trust the picture of the printed notes and let is exert its influence upon us. The graphic picture conveys an idea about the arrangement in time of even the most free pieces. We should make use of all that we know and remember of free declamation, folk-music parlando-rubato, of Gregorian chant and of all that improvisational musical practice has ever brought forth.Let us tackle bravely even the most difficult task without being afraid of making mistakes: we should try to create valid proportions, unity and continuity out of the long and short values - just for our own pleasure!
