The Romanza for cello and piano by Pier Adolfo Tirindelli (1858-1937), who was particularly noted for his vocal compositions, is a cantabile, expressive piece that is typical of the salon romanza. Par CRAS JEAN. Très tôt formé à la technique du clavier et du violon, entouré de frères et sœurs pratiquant piano et cordes, Jean Cras en vint rapidement à composer de la musique de chambre. Ce sera d’abord un trio avec piano, Voyage symbolique, suivi au tournant du siècle par les trois sonates, L’Esprit (pour violon et piano), L’Âme (pour alto et piano) et La Chair (pour violoncelle et piano). C’est peu après ces débuts que Jean Cras entame la composition de ce Largo en fa dièse mineur, dans sa première version pour violoncelle et piano. Nous avons bien peu d’éléments sur cette œuvre. Dans un courrier à sa famille, datée du 6 décembre 1903 alors qu’il est en poste à Bizerte, le compositeur écrit : « Mon Andante pour violoncelle sera bientôt terminé. Il y a des jours où je crois que c’est très bien. En tous cas, quelle que soit la qualité des sentiments qui sont l’âme de mes compositions, je sens que leur expression en est maintenant plus virile, plus robuste. » S’agit-il bien du Largo en fa dièse mineur  ? Sans doute, car aucune trace n’existe d’un Andante pour une formation similaire. Le fait que sur les différentes sources manuscrites figure la mention « novembre 1903 » reste dans ce contexte un mystère. Le manuscrit autographe qui a servi à établir la présente édition est déposé à la Médiathèque musicale Mahler à Paris. Il est complété par plusieurs autres sources manuscrites dont des parties séparées de violon et d’alto nous montrant que ces deux versions alternatives étaient bien la volonté du compositeur. Nous en proposons donc l’édition en trois versions : pour violoncelle et piano, pour alto et piano, pour violon et piano. Cette pièce, courte méditation de forme lied A-B-A’, a été créée par André Lévy, violoncelle, et Colette Cras, la deuxième fille du compositeur, le 22 novembre 1934, deux ans après la mort de Jean Cras. Elle a été enregistrée par Aleksandr Khramouchine et Alain Jacquon à Vincennes, en avril 2008 (label Timpani) et sa recréation au concert a eu lieu au cours de la Folle Journée de Nantes 2013, le samedi 2 février, par Raphaël Pidoux et Vincent Coq. Cesar Franck's Sonata for Piano and Violin is one of the most treasured works in the violin repertoire, a masterpiece of cyclic form with a gracefulness and expressive force almost paradigmatic for the age of musical Romanticism. This work was composed in 1886 and was dedicated to the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe.Franck's friend, the cellist Jules Desart, was so impressed when he heard the Violin Sonata performed at the Société nationale de musique in Paris that he adapted the work for his instrument. This arrangement was first published in 1887 by inserting the cello part into the piano score of the original edition. For this purpose the piano score had received a new cover and the publisher had expanded the title of the composition to 'Sonate pour piano et violon ou violoncelle?. This version by the cellist Jules Delsart for piano and violoncello is the only arrangement of the work authorized by the composer and its first edition represents the main source for Bärenreiter's new scholarly-critical publication.Bärenreiter's new edition also includes a separate movement, 'Mélancolie?, first published after Franck's death in 1911, again for the same instrumentation, piano and violin or violoncello.
