Le Duel à coups de gourdin (Dos Forasteros) fait partie des 'peintures noires' (1820-1823) de la Maison du Sourd de Goya, telles qu'on peut les contempler aujourd'hui au Musée du Prado de Madrid. Goya y montre deux paysans qui s'assomment à coups de gourdin, deux hommes déjà à demi-enlisés - dans des sables mouvants peut-être et uniquement occupés à s'entretuer. Ce duel sans merci, dans un paysage de cauchemar, mettrait aux prises deux gardiens de boeufs de Galice. Cette toile, qui me paraît fidèlement expressive des temps présents, m'a inspiré cette pièce de concours dont un des aspects essentiels est la dimension 'agonistique', le conflit. C'est une oeuvre qui travaille sur les contrastes et qui, en progressant, se rassemble et se détermine. Son élaboration se situe en deçà de la structure, l'articulation ne suppose que des tensions. Ce monde sans horizon se concentre sur le jaillissement du présent. Le temps ne s'écoule pas: ce n'est qu'une succession d'événements ponctuels sans intériorité. Le Duel à coups de gourdin découvre un fond abrupt, irrationnel, un tumulte de contradictions et de coups. La virtuosité s'exprime par une tempête de mouvements, une perpétuelle décharge paroxystique. Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, was born Christmas Day, 1745, on the island of Guadeloupe, then a French colony, in the Caribbean Sea. The son of a wealthy plantation owner and a slave, he rose to unimaginable heights in French society thanks to his excellence in many things including math, literature, and fencing, but most of all, music. He rose to become one of the most popular violinists and composers in France, even hired to provide music lessons for the imperious Marie Antoinette who would become the last queen of France. Bologne's amazing life story came to life in the 2022 film Chevalier.
