Take My Life, and Let It Be Consecrated was written by hymnist, Frances Ridley Havergal, daughter of the well-known English hymnist William Havergal. Francis wrote that it was on occasion of visiting the home of a friend that the hymn was composed. It seems there were ten persons in the home that she was visiting, some converted and some still unconverted. She prayed, 'Lord, give me all in this house!' At the end of her visit, all were converted. It was then that she penned the hymn that ends with 'Ever only, all for Thee!' Multiple voicings, instrumental parts and a beautiful fully-orchestrated accompaniment track are available. / Choeur

Revisiting The Don is a piece of music composed by Michael Nyman for the album 'Mozart 252', a celebration of the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth. Revisiting The Don is one of the two newly-composed works on this album and is arranged here as parts for String Quintet. Nyman himself states that 'as the title suggests, I revisit the same harmonic material that makes 'In Re Don Giovanni' so powerful, and come up with more lyrical 'solutions'.' The result is a wonderful piece, beginning with a smooth staccato that lays the foundations for wonderful lilting melodies. The piece gradually progresses to widen out the warm strings, making this piece a real joy to play. / Quintette A Cordes

Anne Boyd's The Quiet Place for Oboe (doubling antique cymbals) Clarinet (doubling rin) Viola and Harp. The Quiet Place was commissioned by the Warwick andLeamington Festival for performance by Okeanos on their New Music Day on 14th July 2002.'The Quiet Place' is a meditation site in the University of York dedicated by Dame Janet Baker 'In honour of thespirituality which is in all people'. It was a place I visited frequently in the months I spent as visiting Professor at the University in late 2001. So soon after the attack on the New York Trade Centre the worldfelt a very unstable place especially to be so far from my Australian home. It was difficult to make much sense of existence in a world of fanatical fundamentalism - both Islamic and Christian. Perhaps for comfort I foundmyself thinking back a thousand years to the vital earth based spirituality of Hildegard of Bingen and uncovered an Antiphon she had composed 'Nunc Aperuit'. This chant became the basis of the work I have written forOkeanos in response to an invitation from Jinny Shaw whom I met in York last year. In English translation the words of the chant translate as 'Now the closed door has opened for us / What the serpent hassuffocated in woman./ Therefore shines forth in thedawn/ the flower from the Virgin Mary. ' The music of 'The Quiet Place' is a simple meditation which explores the moods of this text often retreating into a silencewhich is both breath and transcendence. - Anne Boyd

Par ADOLPHE BRUCE. This work was commissioned by violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv to celebrate and commemorate the life of her namesake, Solomiya Krushelnytska. A Ukranian soprano, Krushelnyts (1872-1952) left home at the age of 21 to study voice in Italy, where she became a very successful opera performer and close friends with Puccini. She is often credited with saving Madama Butterfly from obscurity by taking on the role after a failed premiere with a different cast. Visiting her family one summer, she was suddently trapped as Ukraine was absorbed by the Soviet Union and all borders were closed. Realizing that she would never be able to return to Italy to resume her solo career, she joined the faculty of the Lviv Conservatory, where she raised a generation of very fine singers. She died in poverty, never being able to access her savings or property in Italy, but she contributed to the growth of the Lviv Conservatory where Solomiya Ivakhiv studied. Krushelnyts became a well-known symbol of hope for young women in Ukraine, where much of the population knows her name, and many streets are named after her. / Date parution : 2022-06-14/ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

The first opera written for television 'Amahl and the Night Visitors' has become the most frequently performed opera of all time with over five hundred performances annually across the world. Menotti's take on the Christmas story focuses on Amahl a young handicapped boy and his mother who are visited by three Kings -- Balthazar Melchior and Kaspar -- who are on their way to find Jesus. The Kings stay the night during which Amahl's mother tries to steal some of the Kings' gold and is caught in the act. Melchior suggests that she keep the gold because the child they are visiting will rule his kingdom with love not riches. Amahl's mother gives back the gold wishing she had something to give of her own. Amahl offers his crutch as a gift and suddenly is able to walk. He decides to follow the Kings so that he himself may give his crutch to the Christ child. The work is ideal for an amateur performance (for example a secondary school or a local dramatic society) since all the action takes place in one act and one place and the work calls for limited adaptable musical forces. It also gives each principal a chance to shine either in a solo or an ensemble. This book contains the Chorus parts only.

Bright Star Of The West is a biography of one of the most important figures in Irish music in the 20th century. This is the first study focused on sean-nos a distinguished and beautiful repertoire and style and provides a unique exploration of gender and masculinity in Irish music. Bright Star Of The West is the winner of the Alan P. Merriam Prize of the Society for Ethnomusicology. Bright Star Of The West traces the life repertoire and influence of Joe Heaney Ireland's greatest sean-nós ('old style') singer. Born in 1919 Joe Heaney grew up in a politically volatile time as his nativeIreland became a democracy. He found work and relative fame as a singer in London before moving to Scotland. Eventually like many others searching for greater opportunity he emigrated to the United States where he worked as a doorman while supplementing his income with appearances at folk festivals concerts and clubs. As his reputation and following grew Heaney gained entry to the folk music scene and began leading workshops as a visiting artist at several universities. In 1982 the National Endowment for the Arts awarded Heaney America's highest honor in folk and traditional arts the prestigious National Heritage Fellowship. Although Heaney's works did not become truly popular in his homeland until many years after his death today he is hailed as a seminal figure of traditional song and is revered by those who follow traditional music. Authors Sean Williams and Lillis Ó Laoire address larger questions about song identity and culture. They explore the deep ambivalence both the Irish and Irish-Americans felt toward the traditional aspects of their culture examining other critical issues such as gender and masculinity authenticity and contemporary marketing and consumption of sean-nós singing in both Ireland and the United States. Urtext-An annual London celebration of the patron saint of music in the form of a banquet plus the performance of an ode was instituted on St. Cecilia’s Day 22 November 1683. The occasion proved so popular that it continued for some 30 years after. A newspaper account of the first performance of the 1692 Ode informs us that 'the Ode was admirably set to music by Mr. Henry Purcell and perform’d twice with universal applause'. The popularity of Purcell’s setting is apparent from the many sources that survived from the period and from printed extracts which appeared almost immediately after its first performance. The editor Christopher Hogwood is the founder-director of theAcademy of Ancient Music with whom he has made over 200 recordings.
