The complete Harpsichord work - Volume 2 by Louis Couperin is the second of a series of volumes with suites for Harpsichord. Composed in a Baroque style the whole series features 133 pieces for advanced players. Louis Couperin (1626-1661) was a French composer and performer who created many pieces for Organ and for Harpsichord who later became musician at the court. He invented the genre of Unmeasured Prelude for which he created a form of notation where the harpsichordist can choose how long each note lasts. François Couperin Louis’ nephew is also a very famous musician who played the Harpsichord.

This edition of Harpsichord Work by Antoine Forqueray has been reviewed and edited by Colin Tilney. Dedicated to “Madame la Dauphine” (i.e. The King’s daughter here the daughter of Louis XV) this volume includes six suites for a total of 32 pieces. Each of these pieces is actually named after the Courtesans of the Dauphine. With different degrees of complexity these pieces would fit the skills of players with an upper intermediate level and above. The mark-ups in this edition are quite close to those used on Rameau his pieces being popular and well commented. AntoineForqueray was a harpsichordist under the King Louis XV period. Professor of the Dauphine Henriette-Anne he dedicated this piece to her.

Jean-Henri d'Anglebert (1629-1691) was one of the foremost composers of Keyboard music of his day. Therefore the collection of his works Pieces for Harpsichord is essential to all players of early Baroque Keyboard music. D'Anglebert's Pieces for Harpsichord represents some of the finest achievements of the French Harpsichord school and shows the composer's mastery of counterpoint as well as his ability to experiment with texture to achieve orchestral sonority. Moreover d'Anglebert's collection contains a table of ornaments which formed the basis of those of J. S. Bach and other significantcomposers. De La Guerre's Harpsichord Pieces was composed in 1687. The compilation remains a favourite in the Harpsichord repertoire. Elisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665-1729) was born into an important family of musicians in Paris. Comprising four Suites de La Guerre exemplified in her compositions her own skills on the Harpsichord. Each of the Suites begin with a Prelude Allemande two Courantes Sarabande and a Gigue. Written for solo harpsichord.The composer writes: In 1989 I composed Jardin des herbes a set of three pieces for solo harpsichord. My intention was to evoke the colour and delicate aromatic qualities of three herbs rosemary sweet violet and lavender. Rosemary is a bush with pale blue flowers glowing in the moonlight Sweet Violet is described as early spring flowers with seductive scent and Lavender with tranquility andpurity. Lavender was revised in 1995. This score represents the original 1989 version. Jardin des herbes was written for Akiko Kuwagata who gave the first performance in Tokyo in March 1989.
