The French titles and tempo markings in this four-movement, twenty-minute-long trio point to the composer's particular affinity to French culture. The 'Prélude? is followed by an impressive 'Invocation?, an homage to Schlee's highly regarded former teacher Olivier Messiaen in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of his birth. This movement, composed somewhat earlier than the others, was the departing point for the work. Amongst contemporary music one is not likely to find titles like those that were chosen for the final two movements: 'Allégresse? (exultation, joy) and 'Eglogue? (eclogue - a short pastoral poem). The titles give the music a lasting dramaturgical quality. They reflect the lyrical, serene atmosphere of this extraordinary masterpiece. / Violon, Violoncelle Et Alto

Music for Clarinet in Bb, Cello and Piano. Par JOST CHRISTIAN. In this trio, as in most of his compositions, Jost has pictures and associations with true incidents, films and novels in his mind. What inspired him to write this piece was Joseph Conrad's novel 'Heart of Darkness' in which the protagonist Marlow says about the city of Brussels: 'In a few hours I arrived in a city that always make me think of a whited sepulchre.'
In 'Sepulchral City', a work commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, however, the title refers to Jerusalem, the city of white tombs. The topic of Jost's trio is a travel into the soul and living spirit of a city, with no physical movement being needed to find the heart of impenetrable darkness: It lies within the city walls.
In this respect, 'Sepulchral City' equals a compositionally unfolded funeral bell. Even the animated middle section rather has insisting than progressive power. At the end, the only thing to do is to inhale and exhale./ Répertoire / Clarinette en Bb, Violoncelle et Piano

Sonaten op. 1: Nr. 1 4 und 9 op. 3: Nr. 2 4 und 12. Very few works in music history have been associated with the phrase 'epoch-making' yet Arcangelo Corelli's Trio Sonatas are among them. In 1681 and 1685 with the composition of Sonate da chiesa Op. 1 and Sonate da camera Op. 2 Corelli laid the foundation for a genre which was to be the chamber music format for almost 100 years. It was only in 1781 that it was superseded by Joseph Haydn's String Quartets Op. 33 which were also highly significant to the era. From a historical point of view the String Quartet can be viewed as a 'child' of the trio sonata. As a result Wiener Urtext Edition have published a selection of 12 of a total of 48 trio sonatas due to the 300th anniversary of the composer's death. Volume 1 contains six sonatas of the Da Chiesa model Volume 2 six pieces of the Da Camera type. This new edition was based on original editions the first Italian reprints as well as the Rogers Amsterdam edition. In addition to parts for the melodic instruments the new edition also contains a Continuo score with realised easily playable Basso Continuo. This edition is perfectly suitable as an introduction into chamber music.

Par VAN DER ROOST JAN. Minerva by Jan Van der Roost was composed on the commission of the German “Musikverein Braunshausen” on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the orchestra. The composition, first performed on September 17, 1999, is not a street march but a concert march, just like Mercury and Arsenal. The use and variation of different rhythmic patterns gives the first part of this march a distinctly dynamic character. Two main themes are presented in several instrumental combinations. The theme from the trio, on the other hand, is characterized by a broad melodic approach using large intervals. This theme, wreathed by high woodwinds, is heard one more time after a contrasting newpart, but now in a somewhat slower tempo. The counterpoint in this part refers to the first part of the march. The brilliant ending suits a festive anniversary march! / Niveau : 4 / Marche / Répertoire / Brass Band
