Jackson Mississippi attracted a host of blues musicians in the period 1910-1940. Many players from small towns made their way to Jackson which as the capital of Mississippi and a much larger city held forth the promise of moreand better work opportunities and the possibility of making a living playing music rather than driving a mule or chopping cotton. Composer's notes:The Fool is a time-honoured Orthodox religious figure: a Saint the highest of all who discards everything for Christ's sake. He discards all convention all decency all wealth actual and spiritual and turns himself into a figure of fun - defying all acceptable behaviour - and all religious decency. He stands in the square and lets down his trousers - he stuffs himself with food on Good Friday - he gets drunk - he 'appears'to fornicate wildly. There is a faint possibility (in not the highest of 'Fools') of gaining worldly popularity by such flagrant denial of all moral behaviour. Can such behaviour be too interesting? The true fool however embraces all of this and also (unseen) shrinks before the face of his God. By his behaviour he plucks out all hypocrisy false piety and corruption. He is a figure much needed in our times!!! The way I have tried to tacklethis extraordinary subject is to show him in seven stages from an obscene huge fat traditional clown who is drunk fornicating etc. through a stumbling frail agonized figure to a sallow-faced gaunt business man in a formalsuit staring at an empty glass. Having first revered him then mocked him the 'people' while they get drunk and jabber away at 'Christmas' and at the Feast of Feasts 'Easter' are no longer aware of him. But the audience seeshim - a tiny ragged scrap of mortality lying in a corner and faintly so faintly the voice of the Fool the true Fool for Christ's sake sings above the ribald crowd. 'He has given His life'. The Gogmagogs are the 'people' 'priests' 'singers' etc. and one male singer who can 'create' or 'uncreate' this vast role (singing and acting miming etc.) John Tavener Arranged for SSATBB chorus. This Orchestral score and instrumental parts have been arranged by Frank Naylor for school and amateur Orchestras. This set includes a conductor’s score and instrumental parts as well as Piano accompaniment elementary Violin Alto and Tenor Saxophone and 3rd Violin. With the composition of the Thunder and Lightning Polka Johann Strauss completed the elevation of the polka from an Eastern European peasant romp to a dance form embraced by Vienna’s most fashionable circles. The ‘Waltz King’ was also a prolific composer other dance music: gallops and polkas marches and quadrilles. His sparkling dazzling Thunder and Lightning quick polka has become such a favourite in therepertoire that it is played every year along with The Blue Danube in the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Day Concert. The programmatic scoring evokes elemental weather events through the extensive use of timpani and the clashing of cymbals szforzandi and dramatic accents. The piece ends with as much excitement and energy as it begins not flagging for a second.

The composer writes: 'My approach to writing these works for intermediate level lever harp was to fully embrace the diatonic and/or modal properties of the lever harp and to write into the strengths of the instrument. I also wanted to create works which whilst embedded in stylistically familiar territory also open up less familiar technical and musical elements for new players. For example the ???celtic??? themed works Coire Fhionn Lochan and The Road to Kilchurn Castle are derived from very familiar elements but which challenge the players ability to deal with irregular times and juxtaposed rhythmic material and Reverie which tests the harpists ability to maintain evennesswhile controlling gradual changes of tempo and dynamic within a very familiar technical landscape. One of the other important things was to write works specifically for the lever harp (as opposed to pedal harp) especially given that so much lever harp repertoire consists of arrangements or re-arranged pedal harp music. The lever system offers many advantages over the pedal system including the opportunity to employ chromatic possibilities that would otherwise be impossible. So some of these works indulge and celebrate these idiosyncrasies. I hope you will enjoy playing them as much as I enjoyed writing them.'
