This is the original version of Winternacht for 7 instruments composed by Hans Abrahamsen in 1976-78. Programme Note: Winternacht was written in 1976-78 and the title was taken from a poem by the Austrian poet Georg Trakl. The four movements which are all very precise and dreamingly poetic are almost classical in terms of clarity and discipline in orchestration and form: hence the dedication of the third movement to Igor Stravinsky. However the music has a strong impressionistic quality as well: four introverted still lives of the velvety dark iceness of a silvery winter night (one can veritably sense the fairy-tale-likesleigh ride in the two outer movements).The second movement is dedicated to the eccentric lithographer M.C. Escher and the first and last movements are both dedicated to Georg Trakl. As in the well-known orchestral work Stratifications we can enjoy Abrahamsen's fascination with having several events occur simultaneously: a thoughtful as well as playful multilayered quality mirrors the poetic and mysterious worlds of painting literature nature and most important of all: music.Poul Ruders

These choruses are from the composer's three-act opera Tess which is based on Thomas Hardy's novel Tess of the d'Urbervilles. All three are from Act II which begins on a dairy farm on a May morning in late 19thcentury England.I. Winter is WhiteAngel Clare a budding gentleman farmer sings this song with his Harp for a gathering at the dairy. (the text is adapted from the Hardy poem 'The Seasons of HerYear.')II. AriseAct II iopens with dairymaids and men singing this chorus as they prepare for the day's work. (The text for the outer sections is based on a folksong quoted in the novel; the mkiddlesectiopn employs the Hardy poem 'Gallant's Song.')III. Come Let Us Chime (Wedding Song)Tess a country girl who came to the dairy to escape her dark past accapts Clare's proposal of marriage. Theyembrace the curtain falls and the wedding chorus is heard offstage. During the last few bars the curtain rises on the next scene - Tess and Clare in theur honeymoon cottage.
