The Notebook for Johann Christian Bach completes the collection of surviving instructional works from within the Bach family, following the highly praised Notebooks for Anna Magdalena and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach. Together, Bach?s Notebooks provide a fascinating glimpse into the domestic music academy of the Bach family home. They contain original compositions, exercises, and model examples by other composers, all collected with a view to providing a rounded musical education to family members. Presented as a luxury linen-bound edition with gold-embossed cover lettering, illustrations and critical commentary, this volume includes pieces not featured in previous collections. This first Urtext edition Notebook for Bach?s son Johann Christian has been reconstructed by renowned Bach scholar Christoph Wolff from copies from the estate of C.P.E. Bach. It includes pieces for keyboard by J.S. Bach, Johann Christian?s initial attempts at composition (minuets and polonaises), and pieces by the older brothers Carl Philipp Emanuel and Johann Christoph Friedrich and son-in-law Johann Christoph Altnickol. The collection is completed by two sets of short preludes and fughettas from Bach?s early Leipzig teaching practice, which may have come from other lost notebooks for his family, possibly the one for C.P.E. This Concerto en Ut mineur for cello and piano was first published in 1947 by Editions Salabert being attributed to Johann Christian Bach with harmonization by Henri Casadesus. Certain musicological studies after its publication proved that the Concerto should not have been attributed to Johann Christian Bach after all as it had actually been composed “in the style of Bach” some two centuries later. Nevertheless the Concerto has been a success and is today often performed and studied closely. This edition of the Concerto is a new version of the original score enriched with an introduction and history in French English and Italian

Johann Sebastian Bach?s arrangements of the ?69 Sacred Songs? from the Musical Hymnal by Georg Christian Schemelli (Leipzig, 1736) have long been part of the German language vocal concert repertoire and a mainstay in vocal pedagogy. Originally, only these 69 of the 954 hymns in the collection were published with a single bass line as the accompaniment. Bach?s contribution was to specify harmonies to be played over those same bass lines by adding figured bass numbers and symbols beneath each note.A figured bass line can easily be turned into a relatively simple guitar accompaniment or a more elaborate setting, offering a range of possibilities that make working with this music both interesting and rewarding for the guitarist. Henri Casadesus was passionate about early instruments, as we know from a number of photographs showing him with viola d’amore, the subject of a manual he wrote entitled Tecnique de la viole d’amour. The Concerto en Ut mineur was first published in 1947 by Mica Salabert. The first edition gives the so-called “original” part for solo violocello together with the score which, according to the preface, has been adapted for viola or cello or violin by Casadesus. However, stylistic analysis of the piece, together with some musicological research carried out after the appearance of the first edition reveals that the “original” version for violoncello, on which the adaptation was supposed to be based, cannot be attributed to Johann Christian Bach, but is rather a work imitating his style written two centuries later. In spite of this, Concerto en Ut mineur encountered considerable success and continues to be studied and performed by both violinists and violoncellists today. / Partitions classique / Cordes / Alto / SALABERT
