Variations on an Old Folk Song-Commissioned by the Schott publishing house the ...(+)
Variations on an Old Folk Song-Commissioned by the Schott publishing house the present variations on the song Greensleeves were written in 2000 by Genzmer who seized on the suggestion to write a cycle of variations on this Old English melody which had often served as a theme for variations in music history as for example in the famous anonymous cycle 'Greensleeves to a ground' (around 1700). Genzmer keeps the theme simple yet with great virtuosity and original harmony. All parts are written in a linear fashion. The four variations observe almost in a classical manner the principle of increasing differentiation and acceleration of therhythm.Variation 1 uses crotchets and quavers as well as semiquaver triplets whereas Variation 2 uses semiquavers throughout and Variation 3 the somewhat faster semiquaver triplets. Variation 4 stays on this fast rhythmic level with semiquavers and semiquaver triplets. A rewarding piece for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition as well as for advanced lessons.

Three arrangements including Ave Verum Corpus and the Lacrimosa from the Requiem...(+)
Three arrangements including Ave Verum Corpus and the Lacrimosa from the Requiem.During the year 1771 when Mozart was 15 years old he and his father Leopold were touring Italy which was at that time the most formidable citadel of the music world. In the following four years the young Mozart was received at the homes and villas of Italy's aristocracy. He met the most famous musicians of the time including Niccolo Piccinni operatic rival to Gluck and Padre Martini from whom he was to benefit from studies in counterpoint. He also met many noted male soprano singers and for one the celebrated Venanzio Rauzzini he wrote in 1773 the motet Exsultate Jubilate from whichcomes the well known Alleluia. At the end of his life only 19 years later in Vienna 1791 Mozart was very ill and working on a number of massive works such as the operas The Magic Flute and Titus also the Requiem. Titus was completed in 18 nerve-shattering days as it had to be performed in Prague in September 1791. At its premiere it was a complete flop. This affected the now overworked almost penniless composer's spirit and he returned to Vienna suffering from mental and physical exhaustion. Rest was denied him. The Magic Flute had to be finished for its premier on September 30th 1791. The task of the Requiem still faced him. In this weakened state Mozart thought that he was in fact writing his own requiem reading evil omens into the commissioning of the work. He thought someone had calculated the precise time of his death and was thus troubled with sombre thoughts. He completed the first two of the twelve parts. The next six parts were in an unfinished state and his manuscript ceased at the Lacrimosa. Süssmayer who was working closely with Mozart at the time was given the task of finishing the Requiem.Ave Verum Corpus is also one of his final works. It is a setting of an anonymous hymn written as a motet for Anton Stoll the choirmaster at Baden in June 1791.Mozart was a composer of great genius who

This carol was composed in March 2009 and bears a dedication to Jeremy Backhouse and the Vasari Singers with whom Pott has enjoyed a fruitful creative relationship over recent years. The folk ballad style of the anonymous traditional text lent itself well to a musical setting that preserved the original strophic arrangement and this in turn encouraged the use of textural variation in successive verses to offset repetition of the same musical material. One ‘verse’ of music actually spans two verses of text and therefore the first verse of the poem is here repeated before the fifth and last of the original an arrangement which permits three completemusical presentations. In the second of these the melody is sung by the tenors against a flowing wordlessly hushed background. In the third the melody deviates slightly presenting its central material slightly higher in pitch to create a restrained climax before a slower more melancholic peroration. Francis PottOver the past twenty-five years Francis Pott has acquired an international reputation as a composer of dramatic and emotionally challenging music. His writing unites a distinctive personal voice with a highly disciplined yet versatile technique that is rooted in a keen awareness of the past. Including a steady flow of major commissions his works are regularly performed recorded and broadcast throughout the world. Formerly Lecturer in Music at St Hilda's College Oxford he is currently Professor of Composition at London College of Music Thames Valley University.

Beautiful Airs and Ballads of the British Isles. Par DIEHL MARCIA. This exceptional collection of 41 truly beautiful airs and ballads from the British Isles offers both well-known tunes by the prolific blind Irish harpist, Turlough O?Carolan and rarely heard melodies by anonymous composers; all have stood the test of time. Arranged for soprano or tenor recorder, these include O?Carolan?s classically influenced ?Lord Inchiquin? and ?Eleanor Plunkett? as well as ?O Gentle Dove? and ?Cuckoo Dear?? both examples of the strong tradition of song in Wales. Among other tunes, the haunting modal melodies of ?The Dark Slender Boy? and ?Enchanted Valley? express the melancholic heart and soul of the British Isles. A few of these songs have taken on a life of their own in modern times. ?Bonny at Morn?, a popular traditional tune of northern England and Scotland, was arranged for soprano voice and harp by the 20th century British composer, Benjamin Britten. ?The Skye Boat Song? originally recounted Bonnie Prince Charles Edward Stuart?s journey to the Isle of Skye after his defeat at the historic Battle of Culloden. Later, the song evolved into a lilting lullaby and was more recently used as the theme song for the popular Outlander television series. Departing slightly from recorder notation practice, author Marcia Diehl has judiciously arranged these melodies complete with spare slur markings to aid the amateur player in authentically and musically rendering these tunes. / Date parution : 2022-02-17/ Recueil / Flûte à Bec

A work for Soprano Woodwind 2 Horns and Strings.Duration: circa 15 minutesProgramme Note: 'This work was commissioned as a possible companion piece to Mozart?s Exsultate Jubilate and the decision was quickly made to write something as a complete contrast. The poems chosen one anonymous from the early 16th century the other two by the famous Scottish poet William Dunbar [1460? 1513?] describe the promise of salvation after life?s dark passage. Each of the three poems echo this thought: ?In celum ther is joy with Thee? ?A short torment for infinite gladness? and ?Since erdly joy abides never Work for the joy thatlastès ever?. Thus in each poem the poet can overcome the fear of his inevitable death with the certainty of salvation: this work also has its ?dark? moments but the overall mood is one of calmness and peace. As with the words there are several musical motives that link the three songs. The musical motive for the refrain ?Terribilis mors conturbat me? in the first macaronic poem [also a salute to Mozart since the Exsultate is in Latin] returns a little higher and more despairingly in each verse until the last verse where it is played a whole octave higher. This motive reappears [played mostly by the oboes] in the last song but now the pitch of each repeat goes in reverse that is from high to low. The famous motive of the Gregorian chant Dies Irae [representing death] is used to accompany the prayer of the second song. A musical motive for the joy of Paradise appears in the second song ?A free choice given to Paradise or Hell?. There is also a ubiquitous 3-note chordal cluster which is used to illustrate the words: sometimes as a colour and

Vocal Score Large Print-The story of the composition of Mozart's Requiem has a strange fabulous quality that is entirely typical of the events of his life. Whether we are considering his amazing exploits and achievements as a youthful virtuoso and maestro or the depth of his financial misfortunes in Vienna in the late 1780s there is little that is mundane about the main biographical facts. It comes as no surprise then to find that these facts have often been coloured and embroidered to enhance their emotional effect and to create a legend about this most remarkable musician. The simple story of the genesis of the Requiem is in itself striking - that in the last weeks of his lifeMozart was working on a Mass for the Dead that this work was the result of an anonymous commission and that the commissioner's envoy in order to avoid giving an address paid Mozart several unannounced visits like a messenger from another world - this story can easily be filled out with portents and hints of the supernatural.Even the account by Franz Niemetscheki (first published in 1798 based on information given by Mozart's widow Constanze and later receiving 'official' approval by being incorporated into the Mozart biography by Constanze's second husband Georg von Nissen) writes of the commissioner's agent appearing 'like a ghost' and Friedrich Rochlitz's account goes much further in suggesting that the composer was possessed by a demoniac and feverish desire to complete the Requiem and conscious of approaching doom

The sonata RV 820 represents two 'firsts': it is the latest work to be added to the Vivaldian canon, and it is also one of the oldest works by Vivaldi - perhaps the very oldest among those known. Having come to light among the numerous anonymous manuscripts preserved in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek in Dresden, it was attributed to him by Federico Maria Sardelli on the basis of several musical concordances with early works of known authenticity- in addition, a complex network of biographical and paleographical relationships has revealed how this sonata, copied in the hand of the very young Johann Georg Pisendel, belonged to an initial stock of compositions that Giuseppe Torelli brought with him from Italy after he was appointed Kapellmeister at Ansbach in 1698. In this context, Vivaldi's sonata finds itself in the company of two manuscripts that evidence early versions of two concertos that were later included in L'estro armonico ,, plus works by Torelli and his pupil Pietro Bettinozzi. From these facts we obtain a new picture that sheds light on on Vivaldi's period of apprenticeship and his debt to Torelli: from a stylistic viewpoint, RV 820 is an unusual type of trio sonata for violin and cello that remains structured in a late-seventeenth-century way, a work into which Vivaldi injects inventions that are completely new and individual. This is a rare jewel that reveals the work produced by its composer before he became himself. / Violon, Violoncelle Et Basse Continue
