Reginald Jacques est né en 1894 à Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire et a étudié au Collège de la Reine, à Oxford, où il devint plus tard organiste et directeur de la musique en 1926. Reginald Jacques a également été chef d'orchestre de la Société d'Oxford Orchestra de 1930 à 1936. De 1931 à 1960, il a été chef du Choeur Bach de Londres. En 1936 il fonda sa propre orchestre Jacques, qu'il a dirigé jusqu'en 1960. En 1954, il a été fait Commandeur de l'Ordre de l'Empire britannique. Il mourut en 1969. John Rutter est né à Londres en 1945 et a étudié la musique au Clare College, Cambridge.
