Born in Nottingham England in 1862 Edmund Severn moved to the United States at the age of four along with his family who settled in Hartford Connecticut. Severn began to study the Violin with guidance from his father who taught the instrument professionally. He later studied with Franz Milcke and Bernard Listemann concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orchestra before moving to Berlin to study bowing technique under Emanuel Wirth the first assistant of Joseph Joachim at the Berlin Hochschule. As a composer Edmund Severn wrote mainly orchestral music as well as many pieces for the Violin including a concerto; he also wrote three stringquartets.To this day the Polish Dance for Violin and Piano has remained Severnâ??s most famous work. The famous opera by George and Ira Gershwin from the novel 'Porgy' by DuBose Heyward. George and Ira Gershwin joined DuBose Heyward in Charleston to write the opera which had been germinating in George's imagination for several years. Porgy and Bess was George Gershwin's longest and most ambitious creation but it was not truly successful during his lifetime. Some of the songs had achieved popularity before Gershwin's death in 1937 but the work earned real approval and favor only after the 1940 Theater Guild presentation of a slightly revised version. For years it was performed more frequently in Europe where it was considered a true American opera. Arranged for viola andpiano by Alan Arnold.

The placement of the musicians: The recorder player is placed in the middle of the stage in all three movements. The cello is placed behind the audience in all three movements. In 1st and 3rd movement the violin is placed on the recorders right side and theviola on the recorders left. At the and of the 1st movement the violin and the viola are walking slowly in respective sides in the middle of the hall and stay there during 2nd movement. Before the 3rd movement they walk back to their position in the 1st movement.
