Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. Volume 9 of the new Urtext edition of Schubert's lieder contains lieder composed during the spring and summer of 1816, some of which follow upon series started in 1815. They are available in separate books for high, medium and low voice. The volume was completed by the eminent Schubert scholar Walter Dürr who passed away at the beginning of 2018. It was in 1816 that Schubert completed his settings of Ossian's songs and added lieder on texts by Johann Georg Jacobi, Johann Peter Uz and Matthias Claudius. Also included are the lieder from the Grob family songbook. In summer 1816 Schubert produced his first settings of poems by Christian Friedrich Daniel Schubart ('Grablied auf einen Soldaten” and 'An mein Klavier”), the author of the words to one of his most famous songs 'Die Forelle”/ 'The Trout” (see Volume 2)./ Répertoire / Basse et Piano

Medium Low Voice in B-flat Major-Arranged for medium low voice in B flat. Malotte's choral work The Lord's Prayer is presented here with a freshly engraved score and a companion CD. The score contains two versions of the song in the designated key: voicewith piano accompaniment and voice with organ accompaniment. The CD features the orchestral accompaniment as well as a full performance with a professional singer. Also included is the history of Malotte's song and itspublication.

Composer's Notes:Heavenly Things is my fourteenth song-cycle but the first with piano accompaniment. I mention this because when I was asked to write this piece my first reaction was ‘what can I make of amedium that seems to me quintessentially 19th century’ and I was doubtful that I could produce anything that I would be happy with. Then I went to hear Christopher Maltman and Malcolm Martineau and was so impressed by the magicand intensity of their performance that I saw a ‘way in’ to what at first had seemed a problem. The choice of poems was obviously going to be crucial and I chose the Donne Holy Sonnets because of the dramatic possibilities theyoffer and the huge range of emotion that they encompass. In these settings the piano is always more than a mere accompaniment it tends either to be in dialogue with the voice or to have its own musical agenda which the voicereacts to in an independent but parallel way. Harold Hinchcliffe Sykes was a British twentieth century arranger and composer who usually published under the name Harold H. Sykes. His setting of The Poor Snail is for Unison Voice withPiano accompaniment. It laments the way in which a Snail must carry his home on his back. The lyrics were written by J. M. Westrup who is best known for his poem Flying.

American composer Celius Dougherty (1902-1986) created lovely arrangements of favourite folksongs and sea chanties. With many selections never before published these editions offer exciting multicultural literature forvoice students and teachers.

This edition is more oriented to practical performance than the New Complete Critical Edition. From the range designations of the Lieder, one can see that, despite the transpositions, not all fifteen Lieder of a volume are suited to one and the same voice. The alternative pitches and easier passages written by Mahler often for only one of the voice ranges of a Lied (and not necessarily always for the original voice range) are here provided for both voices. The Notes (pp.165-170) show for which voice these were originally conceived and whether this has to do with a purely vocal facilitation or a musical variant. Unlike the Kindertotenlieder , the fifteen Wunderhorn Lieder do not form a cycle and do not even suggest a unified collection of songs such as the Rückert Lieder. They can only be organized according to their sequence of composition, which should, however, have no influence on the choice or order of a performance. As Mahler himself urged upon his singers: I ask at the very least that you determine the sequence of the Lieder yourself. A subtle sensitive art that enchants all who lend an ear.
