The guitar is of oriental orgin. lt had reached Spain by the 8th century, presumably via the Arabs, and from there, like the lute, it spread through the rest of Europe. Over the centuries the guitar was further developed into an instrument with four courses of strings - this is evident from early-16th-century tablature-books, the earliest known.

Essays by Steven J. Cahn, Marsha Dubrow. Diana R. Hallman, Jehoash Hirshberg, Mark Kligman, Cesar A. Leal, Rachel Orzech, Danielle Padley, Jesse Rosenberg, Laure Schnapper, Benjamin Wolf, Susan WollenbergThe present book aims to describe 19th-century Jewish musical production in light of major social and historical events: a revolutionary process for the Jewish world resulting from its inclusion in European political and cultural secularization. The ferment that such assimilation brought resulted in the fragmentation of the Jewish religious identity into distinct liturgical currents. How much the 19th-century modernization of the Jewish world affect the Jewish identity of composers and their music, encompassing the following components: conversion, liturgy, synagogal chant and cantillation, musical form, opera, textuality, entrepreneurship and individuality? How many of these structural components were direct or corollary to both musical composition, and the concept of Jewishness?

Essays by Louise Benrard de Raymond, Muriel Boulan, Thomas Christensen, Etienne Jardin, Ellen Lockhart, Fabio Morabito, William O'Hara, Alban Ramaut, Annette Richards, Michael B. WardThe nineteenth-century composer has a persistent image problem: inspired, unworldly, male, writing works of genius for posterity. If it has been the project of musicologists for the last 30 years to erode this checklist, he lingers still like a bad smell. This book uses Antoine Reicha (1770-1836) as a case study through which to develop alternative approaches to the nineteenth-century composer. That Reicha was a composition teacher and prolific writer of instruction manuals, for example, provides an opportunity (and new types of sources) to focus on composers' attempts at becoming composers. How can we catch them 'in the making', exploring not a body of works and achievements, but the priorities and anxieties of these individuals (the knowledge they followed or created) in crafting their artistic identities for the public? What modes of music historiography and analysis might help explore Reicha's and his contemporaries' music beyond mapping it within local or national traditions and their transfer? Can a networked model of music-history writing - we might call it 'a history of music with no protagonist' - assist musicologists in working on non-canonical composers without retrospectively making monuments out of them? These and other questions frame this volume, in order not only to reassess Reicha, but also our disciplinary toolkit: to ask how/why/to what end we tell stories about composers in musicology more generally.

One of the great classics of 20th century choral modernism. Ligeti's thrilling 'Lux Aeterna' achieved global fame following its use on the soundtrack to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film '2001: A Space Odyssey'. For 16-part Choir SATB, the work deploys Ligeti's technique of micropolyphony and uses cluster chords to create a densely buzzing haze of sound. Vocal Score.

A concise yet comprehensive survey of 20th Century music for both students and the general public. Written by Graham Hearn who states, my aim has been to highlight where composers have pushed boundaries, stretched our credibility and shown such leaps of imagination as to make us remember that the 20th Century is possibly the most extraordinary of them all.
