Bars 282-285 or not? To this day, it has been impossible to ascertain exactly how Mozart wanted to end his Overture for a concert performance. Bastiaan Blomhert's source-critical new edition, which makes use for the first time of authentic performance material revised by Mozart himself, gives the conductor the freedom to choose between the two plausible alternatives. Johann André’ s concert close, the standard ending for nearly two centuries, went down in history as a historically legitimated version.

The River Alladale provides the inspiration for this lyrical piece which has a lilting melody with an unmistakeable Scottish feel. The trio of Flugel Horn, Tenor Horn and Baritone provide a wonderful sense of flowing with the river which, as the piece progresses, broadens and grows stronger as it nears the outlet to the sea by the Summer Isles. Bring a touch of Scots magic to your concert with this delightful piece.

The Stations of the Cross are a centuries-old element in worship services which are firmly anchored in the visual arts. There is hardly a Catholic church which does not include a representation of the via dolorosa in its interior design. Thus it is all the more astonishing that this subject is not nearly so widely portrayed in music. Franz Liszt (Via crucis) and Marcel Dupre, with his ingenious improvisation which later became a composition, are practically the only representatives of this genre of composition in music history. The present work for a cappella choir, three dancers, timpani, baritone and soprano soloists, oboe and organ offers a new approach to the literary model of the Stations of the Cross. The emphasis rests with the choir, which is responsible for six Stations of the Cross. Here, in part, the stations are assigned associative text from poetry (e.g., Christian Morgenstern and Michelangelo). Three dancers dance the three Stations of falling in a setting filled with black light, accompanied by a speech motet provided on CD. The organ appears in a solo capacity and as an accompaniment to the solo singers. The timpani announce the horror of death by crucifixion. Together this collage-like work forms a magnificent whole. The duration is 60 minutes.

Prelu de to a Pageant was commissioned by Woodley Concert Band to celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2014. Celebratory in nature, Prelude to a Pageant includes a famous musical link to The Reading Rota (Sumer is icumen in), a manuscript dating from around 1240, discovered nearby Reading Abbey. This lively tune appears early in the work, after an arresting, rhythmic opening and expressive slower section, and also forms the final climax.

I was asked awhile ago to write a composition that not only laid well under the hands but was also of intermediate/advanced student level difficulty and suitable for concert performances. My initial thought was, 'impossible.' However, after careful consideration, I finally decided that it could be done. Very few teachers and performers of keyboard instruments realize that C major is the most difficult key to play. In fact, the more of the five 'black' keys employed, the easier the composition. This is due to the natural position of the hand and length of the fingers. In the end, the key of E-flat major with its relative minor of C-minor was chosen with a brief foray into the realm of E-flat minor. The end result was this effervescent and intoxicating waltz. Once mastered, this composition nearly plays itself and can then be utilized as a show-stopping encore.

A dynamic new programmatic work which depicts events and scenes from the history and folklore of Annandale, Minnesota. Events depicted include the Great Train Wreck of 1922 and a visit to Al Capone's hideout on nearby Bungalow Island. The music features solos for horn and trumpet and every section of the band get lots of chances to shine. There are many percussion parts which will keep even the largest percussion section interested and involved. An impressive composition that is a terrific choice for any concert or contest performance.
