Symp hony No.63 La Roxelane the first movement of which re-employs (with reduced instrumentation and some structural adjustment to conform to its new symphonic setting) the overture to Haydn’s opera Il mondo della luna which was originally composed for the 1777 season at Esterháza. The second movement, headed Roxelane Allegretto, is a set of variations on the French melody La Roxelane which reveals itself as an early example of the composer’s favoured double-variation form of contrasting major and minor key sections. Roxelane herself is the leading female character in Les trois sultanes, a stage play by Charles Simon Favart performed by Karl Wahr and his theatrical troupe in a German translation at Esterháza in that same year with (we assume) incidental music by Haydn. The Menuetto and concluding Finale Presto of the symphony were newly-composed and do not (as far as we know) make use of re-cycled theatrical music.

Les enchevêtrements contrapuntiques, situés vers le milieu de la deuxième partie de l’Aria, constituent le sommet expressif de la pièce qui se termine comme elle a commencé, dans un climat d’une grande sérénité.

This aria originates from Bach's fourth cantata of the Christmas Oratorio which was composed for New Year's Day and is scored for Tenor, B.c. and two solo violins. They start with the main theme in a concertante fugue before the tenor enters. The present arrangement is based on this Instrumentation and Transfers the tenor part to a third violin.

During the intensive study of Johann Sebastian Bach's Musical Offering for the creation of a commissioned composition for wind trio, I had the idea of writing a larger organ work on the Royal Theme at the same time. This is how the Three Ricercare came into being. They are multi-part fantasies for organ, which - connected by the frequently transformed thematic material of the Musical Offering and the manifoldly reshaped B-A-C-H motif - alternate between free, rapsodic parts on the one hand and strictly structured parts on the other. For my 60th birthday, W. E. v. Lewinski wrote an appreciation under the title: Music in the span between constraint and freedom. This formulation aptly characterizes the new organ work. A string quartet with optional violin for viola. After a full ensemble introduction the piece gives way to a duet in the viola and cello. With the violins entering one at a time the piece now becomes full with all parts present gravitating to motivic development moving to a modulation. The next section gives the tune to the cello with the upper lines adding punctuated accompanied figures. The next section uses motivic patterns while passing portions of the tune to the various players. A modulation- then the parts become increasingly more active in a variation style. Le compositeur et violoniste tchèque Frantisek Vincenc Kramar dont le nom fut germanisé en Franz Vinzenz Krommer, est né le 27 novembre 1759 Kamenice en Moravie occidentale et mort le 8 janvier 1831 Vienne en Autriche. l’adolescence, il est initié l’art du violon et l’orgue par son oncle Anton Matthias Krommer lui-même organiste et chef de chœur. En 1785, il fait un premier séjour Vienne avant de rejoindre l’orchestre du Comte de Limburg-Stirum dont la résidence se trouve Simontornya en Hongrie. Il est engagé d’abord en tant que violon solo de l’orchestre puis plus tard en tant que maître de chapelle. Vers 1790, il obtient le poste de chef de chœur la cathédrale de Pécs. Il quitte cette fonction en 1793 pour entrer au service du Comte Károlyi puis du Prince Antal Grassalkovich. En 1795, suite au décès du prince hongrois, Franz Krommer revient Vienne. Après une longue période d’infortune, il entre comme Maître de Chapelle au service du Duc Ignaz Fuchs, en 1806. Quatre ans plus tard, il est nommé au poste de directeur musical du Thé tre Royal et Impérial de Vienne (Wiener Hoftheater). En 1818, succédant Leopold (Johann Anton) Kozeluch, il devient le dernier Maître de musique de chambre et compositeur de la cour des Habsbourg. Il gardera ses fonctions jusqu’ sa mort en 1831.Franz Krommer était l’un des plus illustres compositeurs tchèques de la Vienne impériale vers la fin du XVIIIe siècle. Sa musique était très appréciée de son vivant et certains le considéraient comme le digne héritier de Joseph Haydn. Son style est indéniablement apparenté ce dernier mais aussi celui de Mozart. Franz Krommer a composé de nombreuses symphonies, des concertos (essentiellement pour instruments vent solistes), des duos pour violons, des quatuors cordes, de la musique de chambre et des œuvres sacrées. Le Concerto pour Clarinette Opus 36 de Krommer a été publié pour la première fois en 1803 chez l’éditeur allemand Johann Anton André.
