They produced leaflets protesting against the National Socialist government of Germany in 1942-3 until they were arrested and guillotined.?Soar to Heaven? follows twocharacters Wu and Zhou involved on opposite sides of the Cultural Revolution in China.?The Oxford Revolution? tells the story of James Meredith who fought a lonely battle against segregation and racial prejudice to becomethe first black student to enrol at ?Ole Miss? the University of Mississippi in the USA.Librettist's Note.There are inevitably and properly some differences between the original libretto and whatMax ultimately set to music. Most of these are insignificant but all the Latin texts in the opera were added by Max and texts for the alternating black / white choruses (Scene 19) and final chorus (Scene 28) were written by him.

Par CAVALLI FRANCESCO. In 1662, Cavalli’s career was at its zenith. The two dozen operas he had written for Venice had helped establish Venice as the world’s first operatic superpower. “Scipione Affricano” (Venice 1664), Cavalli’s first opera after returning from France, was one of his most successful compositions. In a period that valued new works over familiar ones, “Scipione” was one of a handful of operas to live on after its premiere season: it was revived eight times and chosen to inaugurate Rome’s Teatro Tordinona in 1671. Cavalli’s librettist, Nicolò Minato, was inspired by historical accounts of the life of the Roman general Scipio, whose defeat of Carthage in 202 BCE earned him the honorary agnomen “Africanus.” In setting Minato’s libretto, Cavalli drew upon the lyrical gifts that have made operas like “La Calisto” and “Giasone” so popular today. But at the same time “Scipione Affricano” also shows the composer embracing aspects of his two years in France, and responding to musical changes that, in the 1660s, were rapidly altering the face of Italian opera: the growing dominance of arias, a clearer sense of aria organization, and increased interplay between voice and instruments. The first goal of this edition is a practical one: to develop a version of the opera suited to the needs of both professional and student performers. A second goal is to reconstruct the opera’s complete performance history. An amply documented appendix reconstructs earlier versions of 21 arias. Other appendices print the surviving additional music from revivals in Rome and Venice. Br, Karlsruhe, Wuppertal and Bochum. Since his retirement in 1997 he has been living in Erlangen. Furthermore he is the author of the Bach article in the dictionary Die Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart (MGG, 2nd edition). Pieter Dirksen (* 1961) studied organ, harpsichord and musicology. His 1996 doctoral thesis on Sweelinck's keyboard music was awarded the Praemium Erasmianum. Dirksen has since published many studies on, and editions of, several masters of the 17th century (Sweelinck, Bull, Cornet, Scheidt, Scheidemann, Buxtehude, Luebeck, Johann Christoph Bach) as well as Johann Sebastian Bach. In collaboration with Harald Vogel, he edited Sweelinck's Complete Works for Keyboard Instrument (4 volumes, Breitkopf and Härtel). Dirksen is a member of the academic board of the Bach-Jahrbuch as well as a sought-after harpsichordist, organist and continuo player in international ensembles. Dirksen issued a number of much-acclaimed solo recordings (Sweelinck, Scheidemann, Boehm, Louis Couperin, Bach-Vivaldi, Bachs Art of Fugue and Goldberg Variations). Edison Winner 2003. Reinmar Emans (* 1953) studied musicology in Bonn and wrote his doctoral thesis on the cantatas and canzonettas of Giovanni Legrenzi in 1982. From 1983 to 2008 he was an academic staff member of the Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Institut Göttingen, and temporarily deputy of the managing director. He has taught in Bochum, Marburg, Detmold, Cologne and Hamburg, and has been a freelance contributor to various music periodicals. In 2000 he was responsible for the conception and direction of the Thuringian state exhibition 'Der junge Bach: Weil er nicht aufzuhalten' in Erfurt. He has conducted research and produced publications on opera and the cantata in 17th-century Italy, on stylistic development in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, and on editorial philology./ Répertoire / Orgue

One of the most outstanding operas of the first half of the 20th century can be seen again in its full glory: Alexander Zemlinsky's gripping one-act Eine florentinische Tragödie which the composer wrote in 1916 based on a drama by Oscar Wilde has been subjected to years of critical revision by Antony Beaumont.

Gustav Holst has earned a place among the most revered of late 19th and early 20th century composers and is best known for his enduring Orchestral suite The Planets.But before that great work in his use of Englsh folksongs Gnostic texts and these Vedic hymns one can discern Holst’s search for a compositional Voice beyond the constraints of the European canon in the early 1900’s. In Savitri he makes use of modal styles bitonality austerity ofOrchestration in some places richness of texture in others and an ability to suggest Indian exoticism. The piece has a performance time of thirty minutes and has minimal staging requirements.

This short opera (duration of 50 minutes) aptly designed for children to perform with modest resources is a version of the familiar tale though with certain adaptations. Cinderella is an au pair girl who arrives on the scene bytrain and there are three ugly sisters who get their just deserts in marriage to the appalling leaders of the armed forces. Writing for children in the Orkney Islands Davies has also included some local references: these can bechanged to suit other times and places. Musically the piece is a bright sequence of little songs choruses dialogue scenes and dances probably best suited to children between the ages of eight and twelve though the parts of theugly sisters can usefully be taken by boys with broken voices.Text only.Duration c. 50mins.

The final episode of the Ring cycle 'Gotterdammerung' is itself a colossal work - one of the longest evenings of opera in the standard repertory. Musically Wagner has gained such mastery of his music drama and his use of musicalmotives that he treats both with superb freedom - the handling of Leitmotives in this opera can be thought of as one of the most powerful psychological achievements in art. This is the Schirmer edition of the Libretto in theoriginal German with an English translation by Stewart Robb.
