The earliest surviving version of the popular Valse-Impromptu was written by Liszt into the diary of Tsaritsa Aleksandra Feodorovna on his visit to St Petersburg in 1842. This version appeared in print the following year as Petit valse favorite. On his next visit to Russia, in 1843, Liszt wrote a musically and technically more demanding version for Countess Marie Kalergis, a pupil of Chopin, but this was never published in the composer's lifetime. A final version, similar in shaping to the second, appeared in 1853 with the title Valse-Impromptu. The present edition contains the score of all three versions as published in the New Liszt Edition, with the critical notes to them andprefaces in English and German covering all the main issues of the work's origin and interpretation.

Rhia n Samuel is a co-editor of the Grove Dictionary of Women Composers and herself a composer of highly acclaimed instrumental and vocal works, including Daughter's Letters, premiered in 1996 by Sinfonia 21. She wrote Dream-Images in memory of her teacher, Andrew Byrne. Two interludes separate the three 'images', each of which is rhapsodic in mood. The last, Weeping Trellises, refers to the gentle, drooping blooms of the wisteria plant, and, emotionally, to feelings of inevitability and loss. Dream-Images was first performed by Martin Roscoe at the Machynlleth Festival in August 1997.

1906, Scott Joplin met the Creole pianist and composer Louis Chauvin. This encounter resulted in the creation of the rag tune Heliotrope Bouquet. The latter of the two, who could neither read nor write music, composed the first two parts, A and B. Bach's B minor Mass is among the greatest and most ambitious works of all time. The various stages of composition of the Mass occupied the composer for over two decades: beginning with the Sanctus (1724), by way of the Missa of 1733, to the remaining movements of the Ordinary, which were composed during his last years. Thus the Mass, in its wealth of forms with arias, duets, as well as concertante and fugal choruses, displays the essence of Bach's skill and personal style. The first performance of György Kurtág's song-cycle written to poems by Anna Akhmatova took place on January 3rd, 2009, in the Carnegie Hall, New York. In this work it is evidence of the exceptionally intimate relationship between the text and the music, that the composer originally imagined the songs as a single vocal solo. The parts for the instrumental ensemble, with their characteristic colours, only later became paired with the vocal solo. The Russian language and the identification with the female figure make the Akhmatova songs an organic sequel or rather a belated successor to the song-cycles Messages of the late R.V. Troussova and Scenes from a Novel. (Zoltán Farkas).

Handel†™s opera Lotario was first heard at the King’s Theater in the Haymarket on 2 December 1729 and had a run of nine performances. Though never revived in the composer’s lifetime, Handel reused many of its arias in his later operas, sometimes altering the words. The historical background of the plot is the conflict between Otto I (912–973) and Berengar of Ivrea for the Italian crown and Otto’s marriage to the Italian queen Adelaide in 951. In the course of composition, the name of the hero (“ Ottone †in Salvi’s libretto) was altered to “ Lotario †since Handel had already written an opera entitled Ottone on the life of Otto II (955–983) in 1722. The vocal score contains the version composed for the performances of December 1729 and January 1730. It is based on the Urtext of the Halle Handel Edition.

The composer Joseph Martin Kraus was born in the same year as Mozart, and like Salzburg's famous son, he was highly gifted and died too young. But in recent years he has received more attention. And rightly so! He wrote his Requiem in 1775 at the age of 19, probably for his local parish church in Buchen in the Odenwald. The collection Polyhymnia Caduceatrix & Panegyrica of 1619 is rightly regarded as the high point in Michael Praetorius's output. It combines Solennische Friedt- und Frewden-Concert: which Praetorius as a travelling musician had composed largely for festive occasions - he writes of Kayser: Konig: Chur: vnd Furstlichen zusammen Kunfften - and also for furnehme Capellen vnd Kirchen. In these chorael concerti the highly modern, Italian style and the Protestant chorale combine and form a symbiosis which showed the way forward for the history of German music. The chorale settings draw on influences from Venetian polychoral music, use ritornelli and employ obbligato instruments in a way which is beyond compare, even in contemporary Italy. Here we see a quite different side of the master from the composer of Es ist ein Ros entsprungen. And above all, Praetorius always remains a practical musician who ensures that these breathtaking chorale concerti can also be effectively performed with smaller forces, sometimes considerably reduced ones. In the chorale setting Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern Praetorius wrote for a five-part ensemble which is joined in some sections by a four-part capella. For the ensemble, Praetorius suggested both voices and instruments, which he uses in a sophisticated texture of sound, the instruments sometimes duplicating the voices and sometimes alternating with them. The chorale cantata Straf mich nicht in deinem Zorn (O Lord, rebuke me not in thine anger), which was probably written in 1771, makes use of a poem by Johann Georg Albinus on the 6th Psalm. The seven stanzas of the original are realized in seven separate movements. The work’s composer, Johann Ernst Bach, received his musical training from his godfather, Johann Sebastian Bach. He later served in a dual capacity as public lawyer and organist in Eisenach, then from 1756 as Kapellmeister at the ducal court in Weimar.The well-known hymn melody, which has also survived with the text “Mache dich, mein Geist, bereitâ€, can be heard in all movements. As a setting of a penitential psalm, the cantata is particularly suitable for performance during Lent and Holy Week.

The piano concerto in a minor stands out in Edvard Grieg's oeuvre. Besides this famous concerto, he composed only a few other large orchestral works. Because of its popularity even in Grieg's lifetime, it was often performed, not least by the composer himself. So it is not surprising that Grieg made many changes to the score up to 1907. But at the same time, the concerto's size, form and substance remained completely unaltered. Interventions in the piano part basically involved subtleties of nuance, and only a very few places in the music text were altered. The situation was different with the orchestration. Here Grieg was keen to experiment and kept filing away at the orchestra sound right up to the last. Melodies were moved to other instruments, accompanying string chords were reconstructed, and above all the list of scored instruments was changed. The main source of the Urtext edition by Ernst-Gunter Heinemann is the new edition of the score originally published in 1907 by C. F. Peters, thus several years after the first edition of 1872. Taken into account in the present edition are the changes that Grieg made up to the time of his death. Piano reduction and fingering by Einar Steen-Nokleberg.

The Sinfonia in D major (BR-WFB C 8) was probably composed in the mid-1750s during Bach's tenure as organist and Director Musices in Halle. Evidence shows that it was used as the instrumental introduction to the Whitsun cantata Dies ist der Tag (BR-WFB F 13 / Fk 85). However, this is not a piece characterized by the church style, hence a separate performance in a secular context is not only possible, but was probably intended by the composer.
