The libretto was fashioned by Joseph Sonnleithner after Jean Bouilly's Leonore (1798) and revised by Leipzig-born playwright and poet Georg Friedrich Treitschke with Beethoven in 1814. It concerns Leonore's attempts to free her political-prisoner husband Florestan from the prison of the evil Pizarro by disguising herself as a man Fidelio and working in the prison. Picture a day like this is the fourth collaboration between George Benjamin and Martin Crimp, whose acclaimed partnership produced Written on Skin, Lessons in Love and Violence, and Into the Little Hill. Playwright Martin Crimp’s text for the opera is a bittersweet fable on grief and renewal. It tells the story of a Woman (mezzosoprano) who has lost her child; if she can meet one truly happy person before nightfall, they will return to life. In her search, across seven scenes, she meets a pair of lovers, a Composer and their assistant, an Artisan, Collector, and the mysterious Zabelle. Crimp’s text is both lyrical and immediate, matching the precision and intensity of Benjamin’s music. The première of Daudet's play L'Arlésienne with incidental music by Bizet at the Théâtre du Vaudeville on 30 September 1872 was a devastating event for both playwright and composer and the production was removed from the repertory after 19 performances. The critic Johannès Weber however was alert to the quality of Bizet's score and suggested that the composer should excerpt and rescore several pieces for the Concerts populaires where 'the lovely music would be better appreciated than at the Vaudeville'. Bizet must have moved rather quickly to follow Weber's suggestion for the première of the first Arlésienne suitetook place only six weeks later at the Concerts populaires on 10 November 1872 and the work in its new abridged form was soon taken up by many other orchestras. Thus before his death in June 1875 Bizet had the satisfaction that his suite from L'Arlésienne was played by all the major concert societies in Paris and it has remained firmly in the concert and recorded repertoire ever since.

This opera is based on Frenchphilosopher and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery's novella Le Petit Prince an international classic penned in 1943. It was composed by Rachel Portman the first woman to win an Oscar for a film score (Emma-1996) with textby Nicholas Wright. While Saint-Exupery's moving parable of self-discovery is the foundation of the opera's appeal it is Portman's music that gives the work its dramatic impact. Alfonso und Estrella D 732 Romatic Opera in 3 Acts In late September or early October 1821 Schubert and his close friend, Franz von Schober, vacationed in the countryside of Lower Austria. Their first stopover was at Ochsenburg Castle, which belonged to the Bishop of St. Pölten (a close relative of Schober’s), after which they moved on to St. Pölten itself. Roughly a year earlier, two stage works by Schubert had been performed in Vienna: the one-act singspiel Die Zwillingsbrüder and the melodrama Die Zauberharfe. The librettos were both written by the seasoned Viennese playwright Georg von Hofmann, who blamed the press for the indifferent reception the two works weregiven by the audience. Schubert and Schober now decided, it would seem, to write a grand romantic opera uninfluenced by the workaday world of the theatre and beholden solely to their own ideas of what an opera should be. Not until 24 June 1854 was the opera finally performed in Weimar, under the baton of Franz Liszt. It only achieved success, however, in an arrangement by Johann Nepomuk Fuchs that was staged on many German and Austrian stages in 1881–2, allegedly with 'brilliant acclaim'.
