Originally inspired by Eleanor Farjeon's famous poem 'Nine O'clock Bell' where pupils hustle and bustle to school in the morning: Some of them scurrying others not worrying Carelessly trudging or anxiously hurrying.2. A Blitz of a BoyWith an affectionate nod to Charles Causley's sad tale about 'Timothy Winters' who 'hasn't heard of the welfare state'. He sleeps ona sack on the kitchen floor and they say there aren't boys like him anymore.Although the music is laden with pathos there is insuppressible energy too portraying that lovable 'Blitz of a Boy'! 3. A Lesson You'll Never Forget!Roger McGough's black poem 'The Lesson' was the catalyst for this piece. The teacher (and later even the headmaster) set upon a notoriously rowdy class with various lethal weapons systematically murdering all the pupils! He picked on a boy who was shouting and throttled him then and there then garrotted the girl behind him (the one with grotty hair). The baroque style recitative passages represent the school 'establishment' and are contrasted ludicrously with savage harmonic 'stabs' and terrifyingly anxious 'chase scenes' around the class room; this poem is not for the squeamish!

Remember Bethlehem was conceived after a conversation on the works of the late story-telling songsmith Jake Thackray. Thackray’s sometimes bawdy sometimes satirical and often hilarious lyrics are delivered in a lugubrious baritone and underpinned by a strong Yorkshire accent that led him to be dubbed the “North Country Noel Coward”. In his Remember Bethlehem heshows a more tender side and tells a story devoid of expletives and cutting social commentary of a “shabby little country girl” completely broken by the ardours of her journey arriving in Bethlehem as a distrusted foreigner to give birth to baby boy called Jesus. Whatstruck and moved me most about Thackray’s telling of the Nativity Narrative is the way he normalizes Mary. Rather than retrospectively beatifying her - telling her story full in the knowledge of the extraordinary thing she did (as most nativity stories do) – Thackray’s portrayal of her as young afraid and cold makes her achievement all the more astonishing. Indeed so out-of-the-ordinary is the gift given by this apparently ordinary girl that no one and no thing can ever forget it: “Even the stony old hills […] your shaggy old trees […] the sulky old sun Remembers Bethlehem.” My carol of the same name adapts a similar approach to telling Mary’s story. Musically I have only thinly veiled my affection for Peter Warlock’s miniature masterpiece Bethlehem Down and evidence of this can be seen not only in the choice of key triple metre and strophic setting but also in the resemblance of some of the cadential figures. A final strand of influence comes once more from Yorkshire and specifically Charlotte Brontë’s novel Jane Eyre. My wife is a literature scholar and pointed out to me the parallels between Mary’s plight in Thackray’s story and a scene from the novel in which Jane is lost up on the moors. Don't Ever Let Nobody Drag Your Spirit Down-Eric Bibb was raised in the folk tradition the son of the folk singer Leon Bibb. Bibb?s uncle was the world-famous jazz pianist and composer John Lewis part of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Bibb was raised in a music-filled household as family friends in the 1950s and 1960s included Pete Seeger Odetta Bob Dylan and the late Paul Robeson who was named Eric?s godfather. Bibb got his first steel guitar at age seven and he got some advice from Dylan that he never forgot to ?keep it simple forget all that fancy stuff.? When he was 16 his father asked him to play guitar in the house band for his TV talent show Someone New.In 1970 Eric left New York City forParis where he met with guitarist Mickey Baker. There he began to focus on blues guitar and after moving to Stockholm he became enamored with prewar blues. A breakout performance at the 1996 London Blues Festival catapulted Eric to a higher level of visibility. Since then he has toured the world performing at concert halls and major festivals. He has toured with Robert Cray Keb Mo Corey Harris and even opened shows for Ray Charles.Eric earned a Grammy nomination for his collaboration (with Taj Mahal and others) on the children?s record SHAKIN? A TAILFEATHER. His album PAINTING SIGNS was recognized by New Age Voice as a Finalist for Best Folk Album of 2001. This arrangement of Telemann 's ; Twelve Fantasias for treble Recorder is based on our edition for solo flute BA2971. With the exception of Nos 4, 5 & 12 which were transposed up a fourth for the Recorder, all other fantasias are transposed up a third following a technique often used in the 18th Century. The Fantasias for Flute without bass address themselves less to the virtuoso than to the amateur flutist, who will find everything he wishes in these pieces.
