Norbert Abels, born in 1953, has been head dramaturg of the Opera of Frankfurt since 1997 and guest dramaturg at numerous international theatres since 1985. He studied literary studies and musicology, philosophy and Jewish studies at the Frankfurt GoetheUniversity. He is professor at the Folkwang Universitat der Kunste as well as lecturer of world literature at the Mediacampus Frankfurt and of cultural and theatre history at the Frankfurt Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst and at the Frankfurt Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. Among his publications are numerous books on literary, theatre and musical theatre history, including Ohrentheater (2009) and Notenlese (2016). In addition, he has published books on Britten, Buchner, Schnitzler, Henze, Verdi, Wagner, and Werfel as well as studies on German-Jewish poetry. Since 2006, Norbert Abels has been a member of the Deutsche Akademie der Darstellenden Kunste (German Academy of Performing Arts).

During a period of heat and drought the rain goddess is implored to finally let it rain, to refresh people and to water the earth, so that it can bring forth fruit and flowers abundantly. The composer George Balint (b. 1961) has set this ritual to music for mixed choir, in an impressive piece with thrilling rhythm. As well as the Romanian text, a singable German and English version is included.

The Flute ABC is the work of flautist and flute teacher Vilmos Bántai, who died not long ago. Earlier it was circulated in manuscript, but now the widow of the artist, Éva Sipos, herself a music teacher of international renown, has completed it for publication. Folksongs of different nationalities and children's songs help greatly with learning the new notes. The musical material of the volume is compiled so that it links directly with the next stage, the first volume of the time-tested Flute Method by Zoltán Jeney (Z. 5457).

'In August [Bartók] heard the fifty-year-old Ãron Balogh playing the peasant flute in Gyergyóteker patak in Cs k district. He arranged three songs under the title From Gyergyó, for tilinkó [peasant flute] and piano, and the piano transcription of this occasional composition presented to Stefi Geyer as 'Three Hungarian Folksongs from the Cs k District'. In all three versions Bartók retained the rich ornamentation of the flute version, and added a modal accompaniment to the melodies in a church mode. After the first two rubato melodies, notated in alternating time signatures, he concluded with a melody in strict 'giusto' rhythm. It is in this latter that the pentatonic skeletonbeneath the diatonic surface can best be felt. Volume II of the collected edition of the choral works of Veress contains seven Hungarian folksong cycles or cantatas, a choral poem in Hungarian and a choral cycle in English. In his first creative period (1929-1939), which he spent in Hungary, Sándor Veress's direct involvement in Hungarian folk music research played a decisive part: his folksong experience gained through personal collecting work found expression in his first period of composition for mixed choir. In the course of the 1960s, after his emigration, he returned on two occasions to the a cappella mixed choir genre: in 1962 he wrote a piece for mixed choir to mark the 60th birthday of the great Hungarian poet GyulaIllyés (Óda Európához - Ode to Europe, based on the poem by Illyés), and in 1967, at the request of the Australian Radio Company, he composed for the 'Adelaide Singers' chamber choir Songs of the Seasons, a seven-movement madrigal cycle making exceptional demands on the performers, to verses by the Australian poet Christopher Brennan (1870-1932).
