Psalm XIX: The Heavens Declare was written by the Italian composer, writer, and theorist Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739). By profession Marcello served as a governor and chamber-lain in Italy, although he is well-known for his harsh satires of contemporary coposers, such as Vivaldi and Lotti, As a composer, Marcello was ingenious and imaginative; his works include opera librettos, concertos, vocal music, and psalm settings in cantana style. This particular psalm setting has become popular for organ, and, thanks to the talent of arranger Barry Toombs, is part of the repertoire of the Westwind Brass. Mr. Toombs's brass quintet arrangement of The Heavens Declare calls for the optional B Piccolo Trumpet in the 1st Trumpet part. It is preferred that the 1st trumpet player use a piccolo trumpet. However, if one is not available, B trumpet may be uses as a substitute.

Written and edited by Jody Kerchner and Katherine Strand together with a team of 18 nationally recognized teachers, researchers, and musicians, this book is truly a landmark publication. Central to this book are engaging project-based activities for individuals, small groups, and full ensembles. The authors’ goal is to provide singers with exciting new tools for exploring music. By promoting comprehensive choral musicianship, teachers will celebrate their students’ creativity, and their own. Section 1, Principles and Foundations, provides a rationale for the critical importance of including composition in the choral classroom, pedagogical principles upon which to base composition activities, and practical examples that can be taken directly from the page into the classroom. Section 2, Looking in on Composing in Choir, shares the latest the latest in practices and research related to teaching arranging and composing at a variety of levels and choral styles, with practical ideas suitable for a wide range of choral programs, student ages, ability levels, and interests. Section 3, Composition Projects for Choir, includes lesson plans with goals, outcomes, and procedures for page-to-classroom activities. Examples include composing ostinatos, rounds, partner songs, and songs over a bass line, lessons on arranging, leveraging technology, and using composition to teach sight singing. These lessons are a gold mine of ideas for choral educators and students alike. Every lesson has been “test-driven†with diverse student populations. Ultimately, Kerchner, Strand, and their team show that composing and arranging are not superhuman gifts, activities, or experiences that need to occur in solitude: Creativity and composition should be for everyone. With Musicianship: Composing in Choir, teachers and their students have access to tools and ideas that have the potential to transform their music making. Jody L. Kerchner is Professor & Director of Music Education at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she is the secondary-school music and choral music education specialist. She is also founder and conductor of the Oberlin College Women’s Chorale and the Oberlin Music at Grafton Prison Choir. Her research interests include music listening, choral pedagogy, reflective praxis, empathetic leadership, and music teacher preparation. Katherine Strand is Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Education Department in the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where she teaches classes in participatory music practices, curriculum, and qualitative research methods. She taught K–12 choral and general music in rural and urban settings and served as choral director for the Virginia Governor’s School for the Visual and Performing Arts and Humanities. Her research interests include teaching for creativity, multicultural music pedagogy, and curriculum. Clint Randles, Series Editor, is Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Music Education at the University of South Florida School of Music in Tampa, Florida.

Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impresario) was composed in the spring of 1786 to fulfill a commission from Joseph II for performance during a visit to Vienna by the Governor-General of the Netherlands. The visitors were meant to be entertained with a short German and an Italian musical comedy during a festival arranged on short notice in Schonbrunn Palace. The choice of composers fell to Mozart and Salieri. Both pieces spoofed the theatrical practices of the day. Der Schauspieldirektor, by Gottlieb Stephanie the Younger, has a loosely-constructed plot that hinges on the vanity of opera singers and the empty-headedness of many traveling companies. Frank Lustig wants to create a new theatrical troupe, for which Herr Eiler is willing to supply money, but only on condition that his lady friend is allowed to join. In the course of the piece, appearances are made by other ladies with resonant names who want to be retained as singers and who attempt to outdo each other until reason is allowed to prevail. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5148600.

Blind Lemon Jefferson was a trail blazer, both as a singer and guitarist, but also as a commercial phenomenon, for he was the first blues musician to establish the tremendous appeal that blues, as played and sung by rural African American folk, had for the record-buying public. It is no exaggeration to say that the sales of Lemon’s records paved the way for a host of other solo rural blues musicians to record in his wake and made the record companies more willing to give other musicians a chance, in the hopes of achieving similar success. Lemon ’s record sales weren’t what made him a great musician, though - that could only be attributed to his startlingly virtuosic guitar - playing and soulful singing, developed over years of busking, building on his natural gifts with a great deal of practice and work. In the Guitar of Blind Lemon Jefferson author John Miller presents transcriptions, in standard notation and tablature, of 22 of Lemon’s greatest performances, with an additional essay examining Lemon’s senses of time and phrasing and his picking techniques. Also included is a download link to all the original recordings. To present a picture of Lemon the man, noted blues researchers Alan Governar and Kip Lornell have contributed an essay focusing on Lemon’s early life, the origins of his music, and his time spent in a musical partnership with Lead Belly. Links are provided to downloadable performances of the songs in the book from which the transcriptions were made, so that you can have Lemon’s sound in your head as you learn to play his songs.Blind Lemon Jefferson was remarkable, even in a style that abounded in great musicians, and some measure of his influence can be seen in the fact that musicians recorded in the 1960s, more than thirty years after his death, were still covering his songs and stealing guitar licks from him. The Guitar of Blind Lemon Jefferson gives you the resources needed to learn what was so special about Lemon’s music, and to experience his musical excellence from inside the music itself.Titles include: One Dime Blues, Got The Blues, Dry Southern Blues, Big Night Blues, Rabbit Foot Blues, Shuckin' Sugar Blues, Where Shall I Be, Wartime Blues, Black Horse Blues, Prison Cell Blues, Piney Woods Money Mama, See That My Grave Is Kept Clean, He Arose From The Dead, Beggin' Back, Broke And Hungry, Bad Luck Blues, Matchbox Blues, Lemon's Worried Blues, That Crawlin' Baby Blues, Easy Rider Blues, Stocking Feet Blues and Right of Way BluesLevel 2/3 • 160 pages • Direct download link to audio files.Â
