Fantasy-Variati ons on Two Themes (2017) for organ was written for Heinrich Christensen in celebration of his significant 2017 birthday. The musical material for the work comprises two different themes. The first is a short melody by the Danish composer Carl Nielsen (1865-1931). (It was a sketch originally intended for inclusion in, but ultimately left out of, Nielsen's late organ work 29 Little Preludes.) This theme represents Heinrich's native Denmark. The second theme is the American folk-gospel hymn Angel Band. This theme represents Heinrich's adopted American homeland. It serves also as a remembrance of our dear mutual friend Harry Lyn Huff (1952-2016), for whom the tune was a particular favorite. Both these themes are developed freely in a set of alternating fantasy-variations. The opening variation begins with a dramatic pedal solo before quoting both themes. The second variation is a lyric setting based on the Nielsen melody. The third is a jubilant hornpipe on Angel Band. The fourth is an aria on a transformation of the Nielsen melody. The fifth is a gigue-toccata on Angel Band. The sixth is an atmospheric contemplation: lush chords in the manuals move slowly and hint at Angel Band while the Nielsen melody is heard for the first time in its complete original form on a high pedal stop. The seventh and final variation begins with a brief evocation of the harmonies of the late Daniel Pinkham (a mentor to both Heinrich and me) before going on to return dramatically and jubilantly to the opening music, bringing together both themes again in a bold conclusion. A new accompaniment for every season There's definitely more than spring in the air in this new publication by Ulrike Wohlwender, since the collection also comprises songs for summer, fall and winter as well. Didactically, it follows the successful concept of the Christmas book Was soll das bedeuten (EB 8747). The strikingly illustrated book grows with its contents: the accompaniments begin very simply and reach a level of medium difficulty. Particular care has been placed on the accompanying modules that are intended to help pianists develop their part freely. The book can be used in a variety of ways: for private lessons, training with a partner, or for group lessons. The selection also offers songs in different languages from various countries for every season. All the songs can be heard on the accompanying CD recorded by Ulrike Wohlwender (piano) and Regine Neumuller (voice). Frigyes Hidas (1928-2007) was the most prolific Hungarian composer for wind ensembles, and his works are the most often performed. His worldwide popularity is based on works such as Balettzene (Ballet music), Vidam zene (Cheerful music), El nem tancolt balett (Undanced ballet), Requiem and Save the Sea. His folk song suites, which are enormously popular in his homeland, are fine examples of Hidas' mature style in the genre of folk song arrangements. The first suite works up nine folk songs of differing character and atmosphere, while the second, with its recurrent structure, makes use of five melodies, creating a modern harmonic environment around them and thereby highlighting even more the beauty of the melodies. To perform these works effectively, ample technique is required, as well as an ability to shape the music freely. Highly recommended for ensembles with an interest in Hungarian wind music and folklore.
