Christina Rossetti’s poem The Birthday or My Heart is Like a Singing Bird was published in 1857 and was the subject of at least a dozen musical settings before Hubert Parry. Parry had developed the habit by this point of memorizing a text and ‘cogitating’ on it before beginning composition.In this song Parry employs rippling semiquaver movement in both hands to establish the ecstatic nature of the piece which he only pauses at the climactic ‘Because my love is come to me’ most effectively. It remains one of his best-loved songs.

For those who do not the work is the creation of composer Hubert Parry in the last years of his life when he was established as a well-respected composer conductor and educator. He was asked to create a song for a patriotic meeting using Blake’s words in 1916 during the dark days of the First World War. Hubert Parry (1848-1918) was an extrmely influential English composer during the early years of the 20th century. Throughout his career as a composer he held positions in Oxford University and at the Royal College of Music. His compositions include Jerusalem English Suite For Strings Overture To An Unwritten Tragedy Beast of Bettesthorne and Te Deum.

Originally written with seven movements An English Suite is well-known for its tuneful strains of folk-style melodies brilliantly presented in the familiar English style of Elgar and Vaughan Williams. Parry's suite hasbeen reworked to place it within the reach of most string ensembles and includes three of its best movements – Prelude Minuet and Frolic.
