E J Moeran was a 20th century British composer of Anglo-Irish background who spent his early years in Norfolk and influences of folksong and programmatic elements can be easily heard in this composer’s main body of work. Moeran tended toward the smaller ensembles in his composition which gave an appropriate frame for his great lyric gifts.However in the second half of his life Moeran greatly extended his sensibilities and his musical palate to include more energetic and vigorous rhythms harmonic colours and tonalities. In Sinfonietta written in 1944 is a fine example of Moeran’s later work incorporating near bitonality as well as folklike strains in the variations.

Ernest J Moeran (1894-1950) was an English composer who followed the tradition of R. Vaughan Williams and John Ireland by collecting preserving and using many folk songs mainly from Norfolk Suffolk and Ireland.First published in 1924 Two Songs are both set for High Voice with Piano accompaniment. The first The Bean-Flower is a setting of a poem by Dorothy L. Sayers (1893-1957) which recallsthe scent of the Hawthorn which made the writer fall in love. The second is called Impromptu In March and is a setting of a poem by Doreen A. E. Wallace (1897-1989) a more cheery affair which looks forward tothe coming of Spring.

Volume 2-The second volume of piano works by E.J. Moeran part of the Thames Centenary Edition commemorative series. Edited by John Talbot this volume features a selection of pastoral works and folk or story-based pieces all suitable for the accomplished Piano soloist.
